With races nearing finish line, Capitol Hill hosts busy Seattle Democratic HQ, roster of Election Night parties

With the Seattle Democratic Headquarters running full speed on E Pine, you can find any energy you need to complete your ballot — and plenty of company to help you make it through Election Night 2018 on Capitol Hill.

“Our district has really good turnout, but because in this district we don’t have deeply competitive races, people might not always understand how important their vote is,” Rep. Pramila Jayapal said Sunday morning inside Capitol Hill’s Odd Fellows Building where the Seattle Dems have set up their 2018 campaign headquarters and dozens gathered before heading to the streets for a final “get out the vote” push.

“We do not want to wake up on the morning after the election and think to ourselves, ‘I could have done more. I should have done more. I could have knocked on 10 more doors. I could have talked to 10 more neighbors,'” Jayapal said.

Similarly, it might be best to not have any regrets about your Election Night party choices this year. After the traumas of 2016, you probably want to be with like-minded friends and allies. Fortunately, you have a lot of choices this year around Capitol Hill.

Jayapal, who is forecast to have a 99% likelihood of victory in her race against Republican Craig Keller to retain the Washington 7th District seat in D.C., is holding her big “D” Democrat party at the Hill’s Fred Wildlife Refuge.

Supporters of I-940 to change state law hindering prosecution of wrongful police shootings and provide more training on de-escalating lethal situations will gather off-Hill at the Southside Commons.

For a non-partisan approach, Town Hall Seattle may be still under construction but it will part of the Election Night gatherings with a watch event at The Summit on Pike:

In the meantime, Democratic volunteers and staff are busy checking the voter rolls and hitting the phones at E Pine’s Odd Fellows building.

Even though she and other Democrats representing Capitol Hill and neighboring areas of the city like Washington Rep. Nicole Macri and Sen. Jamie Pedersen will likely achieve easy victories, Jayapal said Sunday she doesn’t take anything for granted and reminded the get out the vote crews that Seattle’s massive population can help win the day for statewide issues like the I-1631 carbon tax.

“Big oil is putting $29 million into trying to defeat this initiative,” Jayapal. “So our turnout — in this district — in Seattle — if we have an enormous turnout — it counts for the statewide totals that can put those initiatives over the top.”

“The Democrats are for the people,” Jayapal said. “That’s why we have to win on all of these issues.”

The District 7 representative also talked about the state’s big races and important initiatives earlier in October at a neighborhood town hall. You can view all CHS elections coverage here.
