Capitol Hill’s Metier has new partner in Homegrown for cycling, coffee, sandwiches — and beer

As a global brand stumbles with as much focus on fashion as cycling, Capitol Hill’s Metier is setting its own pace with a new partner on E Union.

Metier’s Todd Herriott tells CHS the decision to link up with Seattle “sustainable” sandwich shop concern Homegrown was a natural combination and will help keep the food and drink in Metier’s “Coffee and Racing” concept.

“We learned a lot,” Herriott said of Metier’s three years in the food and drink business after it opened its new headquarters combining a cafe, bike gym, and training center on E Union in late 2015. One of the lessons, Herriott said, was to find a partner to put Metier’s space more fully to use with good food connected to the space’s cycling culture.

Herriott said the changeover will also include a new paint job to lighten up the building including a large Homegrown mural.

Homegrown has been part of Capitol Hill’s lunch scene since the 2010 opening of its Melrose Market location.

Metier’s move to Capitol Hill and birth of a cycling center predated the 2017 arrival of global cycling fashion brand Rapha’s clubhouse on Pine at Melrose. Rapha has struggled and began cutting jobs late last year after a takeover by the family behind Walmart.

For Herriott, he hopes Rapha can stay in the race and keep its Capitol Hill clubhouse. He says more cycling on the Hill and in the city can only be good for Metier.

Founded as Herriott Sports Performance near Seattle Pacific University in 2009, Metier has grown into a business focused on the “lifestyle experience for athletes” with trainers and workout equipment along with a cycle and repair shop.

Last year, Metier Brewing Co. was born only a short four-hour loop ride from E Union. While the sandwiches at Metier going forward will be Homegrown’s, the beer will still be Metier.

Herriott said the changeover is slated to happen over coming weeks with a plan for a March re-launch of sorts for Metier as it begins a new leg of the race for business success with its new riding partner.

Metier is located at 1017 E Union. You can learn more at metierseattle.com.
