Police search for suspects after 21st and Union shootout, E Cherry carjacking — UPDATE

Seattle Police and the King County Sheriff’s Guardian One helicopter searched for suspects after a round of gunfire and car crash near 21st and Union Friday night.

Multiple 911 callers reported more than a dozen shots fired in the street along 21st Ave just after 9 PM. Arriving police found multiple damaged vehicles and a red Camaro crashed nearby, according to East Precinct radio reports.

As the helicopter searched the area from above, an SPD K9 unit took to the ground to try to track the vehicle’s driver who reportedly left a phone behind in the crashed car at the scene.

There were no reported injuries and no arrests.

Earlier in the night, a scary incident played out on 32nd Ave where a woman reported her Silver RAV4 had been stolen at gunpoint as she parked near E Cherry and was removing her infant from the car. According to East Precinct radio reports, the suspects in the carjacking were a male and female. Police were able to track a phone taken in the carjacking to an area near 31st and Lander but could not locate a vehicle.

There was more gun violence reported later in the night with a witness reporting a driveby shooting near E Union and Mihor just after 2 AM. No injuries were reported.

CHS also received reports of a 911 issue earlier in the night at R Place where a woman reportedly fell down a flight of stairs and received facial injuries.

UPDATE 11:15 AM: SPD has posted a brief on the 21st Ave incident but the report doesn’t add much new information:

East precinct patrol officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 900 block of 21 Avenue around 9:08 p.m. last night. Many residents heard the shots, but police did not locate any eye witnesses. Police collected about ten shell casings and will submit them to the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab for forensic analysis. Police found an abandoned red Camaro convertible and believe that it was involved in the incident. The driver of the Camaro fled after striking about a dozen parked cars. An SPD K9 officer and the King County Sheriff’s Office “Guardian 1” helicopter attempted to track the suspects, but were ultimately unsuccessful. Police impounded the Camaro to the Seattle Police Processing Room and will search it pending a search warrant. This remains an active investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call 911.

It would be helpful for the police to let us know if there is a motivation behind the incidents, especially on 21st. Many times it might be thought to be gang or drug related. However, that is not always true. Still it gives the community a clue about if there is an ongoing danger or issues.

Agreed. After two gunfire fights on the same mid-City residential block in 5 months (both during evening hours when kids are still out!), I’d like to hear what’s going on and what’s being done to stop it. I’ll be calling the mayor and city council reps (not mine, but the ones who care) and the East Precinct tomorrow. Again.

Not much of a mystery. You can see the drug dealers conducting business there parked across from Union Market in their cars. Is it going to take some innocent person being shot buying tacos at the taco truck or drinking beer at Chuck’s patio before the cops do something about it? An upstairs neighbor at our apartment complex had one of their windows shot out during one of the previous shootings at the same location.
