One person was found dead in a two-alarm apartment fire overnight in a Catholic Housing Services apartment building at 14th and E Yesler.
Seattle Fire was called to the scene around 12:30 AM Monday and found a second story unit in the 1900-built, 34-unit building fully ablaze.
Firefighters quickly brought the fire under control before flames could spread beyond the unit or to the building to the south.
SFD says the blaze was mostly contained to the unit where the body was found. The Medical Examiner was called to the scene and will handle determination of a cause of death and identification of the victim.
Four units in the building were not able to be reoccupied overnight, Seattle Fire said, and Red Cross was requested to assist the victims.
Catholic Housing Services operates the building as part of its homeless, low-income and special needs housing properties. The building has served as housing for the elderly.
Seattle Fire is conducting an investigation into what caused the blaze.
UPDATE: Investigators have ruled the cause of the fire as undetermined pending autopsy results, Seattle Fire says.
Total estimated loss was estimated at $295,000.

I think you have the wrong building. This is the building just to the north of Yesler Place on 14th, which is (Catholic?) housing for the elderly. At least that’s where it looks like the fire is coming from in the photo.
If so, wooden structure built in 1900, not 2005.
I walked by there today, you’re correct. It was the older building, 110 14th Ave, “14th Ave Apartments”.
These nonprofit housing organizations are becoming slum lords and no one is watching. Rats at four Capitol Hill Housing building’s, check Crosscut article about the Oleta; Catholic Community Services Housing and Essential Needs program paying good money to out right for profit slumlords, check Seattle Times; and Bellweather has the worst online ratings of their property mangement services you can imagine, just Google it and Mary’s Place with a formerly homeless woman living in a tent in her own apartment because of the roaches! And now a fire, with one dead. The city, state and county need to clamp down HARD on these organizations. No matter how pretty of a press release and Facebook page they present, they employ a largely negligent and incompetent staff and are getting away with it. Any good employee leaves. This MUST change!
