Finally in 2020, the Washington primary will matter as Democratic leaders voted this weekend to utilize a primary to allocate the state’s presidential delegates.

“Democrats in Washington are ready for the big show in 2020,” state Democratic Party Chair Tina Podlodowski said in a statement. “We look forward to more presidential candidate attention and visits, increasing voter and activist engagement.”

The Washington State Democrats Central Committee voted 121 to 40 to move forward with the so-called “hybrid primary-caucus” plan that will still include a full slate of caucus activity — but the allocation will be set by the primary vote.

Republicans have also committed to again using the primary vote. We’re certain they’ll use it wisely.

Washington is also moving up its presidential primary to make the vote more relevant.
