The new plan for filling Seattle’s City Council vacancy

With reporting by Seattle City Council Insight

Monday night, the Seattle City Council will hold a public forum with the candidates to represent District 4 and Northeast Seattle after the exit of Rob Johnson last month.

Due to “a scheduling conflict due to a religious observance,” the public forum originally scheduled for last Thursday was rescheduled for Monday, April 15th, at 5:30 PM in the Bertha Knight Landes room at City Hall.

The original plan, announced by council president Bruce Harrell in March, said that at the full Council meeting on Monday afternoon the Council would be selecting “a short list of finalists” from the eligible candidates. A spokesperson for the Council has confirmed that they no longer plan to do that: all thirteen candidates are invited to participate in the public forum Monday evening, and in the special council meeting Wednesday evening at 5:30 PM when each will have the opportunity to give a 3-minute presentation and answer questions from the council members.

Harrell has said that given the work the interim council member must take on and the short amount of time before the election, he would prefer nominees that agree to not run for the open seat.

The council plans to vote to fill the vacant position at its regular 2:00 PM meeting next Monday, April 22.
