CHS Pics | A very big crane comes safely down at 14th and Madison

The first major disassembly and removal on Capitol Hill following April’s deadly crane fall in South Lake Union was not uneventful.

High winds last Friday forced crews to stop the effort above the mixed-use construction at 14th and E Madison mid-project.

It was completed without incident — like most of the big crane projects across Capitol Hill and the Central District in the last decade —  on a much calmer day this Tuesday as Chinn Construction crews again set to taking apart the huge machine section by section above the closed 14th Ave.

The disassembly marks an important milestone as workers are finishing construction of the six-story, 137-unit mixed-use project that has risen on the former Piecora’s property.

The investigation into what caused the deadly April incident in which a crane being disassembled fell onto traffic on Mercer continues.

Capitol Hill and the Central District, meanwhile, continue to have a healthy crop of cranes at work in the skies above with the stretch of Broadway under construction with new mixed-use buildings around Capitol Hill Station especially busy.
