Pride may have passed and another Capitol Hill Block Party is in the books but there are still a few more Capitol Hill summer events to look forward to including art-filled street fairs, a new sports-y event at Cal Anderson, and the return of movies in the park.

11TH AVE STREET FAIR — Sunday, August 25 — 11th Ave between E Pine and E Union — More
Blue Cone Studios
will hold the 11th Avenue Street Fair again this year, hoping to connect and showcase Capitol Hill creatives in a free, wide open event.

“After a huge summer of festivals that cost money I think it’s important to throw something in the neighborhood that’s free to the people and involves community performers, creators, and makers,” said Carolyn Hitt, the founder of Blue Cone Studios.

Residing above Queer/Bar on 11th Ave, Blue Cone Studios is an organization run by a group of Capitol Hill artists and creatives providing like minded individuals with a meeting place, gallery space, and on Tuesday Nights during Capitol Hill art walk, an open art studio. Blue Cone’s mission of providing marginalized artists with a space to connect with other artists while creating and displaying art is twofold. While collaboration between artists evokes a sense of community, Hitt believes experiencing art encourages individuals to find an artform resonating with them.

“Art brings people closer to themselves. I always want to give people as much access to creating it, experiencing it, and being a part of it as possible,” Hitt said. “It takes a lot of different kinds of artists to create a community. Art isn’t just painting, music, or drawings. It’s all of it.”

The 11th Avenue Street Fair showcases efforts to find, connect, and showcase Capitol Hill artists, as the fair includes live music, performances, DJs, and artists selling a variety of artwork.

“Somebody that doesn’t like painting and doesn’t understand abstract art can get really lost in music or engrossed with a dance performance,” said Hitt. “In order to bring more people to art, I think you have to have lots of different kinds of art. I come from the theater, so I know how many different craftsmen it takes to put on a stage performance.”

RECESS — Saturday, August 3 — Cal Anderson — More
A new entrant in Capitol Hill summer fun, Recess is planned as a day of “schoolyard games, music and food” on Bobby Morris field and in Cal Anderson Park. CHS talked with the producer of the first time event about its plans to grow the business here in Seattle… and beyond.

THE SCRATCH COMMUNITY BLOCK PARTY — Sunday, August 18 — 18th Ave between E Pike & E Union St — More
The Scratch Community Block Party also hopes to help local artists showcase and hone their abilities this summer on 18th Ave between E Pike and E Union streets, August 18th. The event will be hosted by The Scratch, an organization that provides resources to artists such as organizing networking events, commissioning new works, and facilitating residencies, readings and labs for artists. The block party will include food, art, and vendors.

THREE DOLLAR BILL OUTDOOR CINEMA — Friday, August 30 — Cal Anderson — More
There will only be one movie screened by Three Dollar Bill this summer in Cal Anderson Park but they made it a good one. Catch Kinky Boots in the park with a few hundred of your closest friends. Screening starts around sunset and, yup, there will be concessions.
