  • First Hill car prowl robbery: Police are investigating a First Hill car prowl as an armed robbery after the perpetrator was caught in the act Sunday night by the vehicle’s owner and dropped his gun in the ensuing struggle:
Shortly after 5:00 pm on Sunday, East Precinct officers responded to the 1000 block of Spring Street for the reported robbery. The owners of the vehicle stated that they saw the suspect inside their parked car, removing items from it. A struggle ensued, with the suspect actively fighting to hold on to the stolen property. Nearby security officers heard the commotion and rushed over to assist. During the struggle, a 9mm handgun fell from the suspect’s waistband to the ground. The security officers were able to detain the suspect until officers arrived. Officers arrested the suspect. A check of the suspect’s name showed that he is a convicted felon, and thereby prohibited from possessing a handgun. A check of the gun showed that it was reported as stolen.
Police say the 25-year-old suspect is a convicted felon and prohibited from possessing the handgun that reportedly dropped from his waistband during a struggle over items ripped off from the vehicle. “A check of the gun showed that it was reported as stolen,” police write. The suspect was booked into King County Jail for investigation of robbery, felony gun charges, and possession of a stolen firearm.
  • I-5 gun false alarm: Police were called to the area along I-5 Saturday night to a report of a man with a handgun pointing it at passing cars on the freeway below. SPD officers fanned out around the area around 7:30 PM and located one man matching the suspect description along the Lakeview trail near Melrose. Police found the man was carrying an iPhone not a handgun, according to East Precinct radio updates.
  • Arson arrest: A woman was arrested by police for investigation of arson after two small fires were intentionally set Friday along 12th Ave, SPD reports:
Around 11:30 AM, police and firefighters were called to the 400 block of 12th Avenue after a woman reportedly reached under a fence at a construction site, grabbed an object from under the fence, set it alight and then placed it under a nearby truck. She then left the scene. Construction workers quickly extinguished the fire but, minutes later, another fire was set in the hallways of an apartment building just across the street.
Police say witnesses provided a description of the suspect and she was found nearby carrying two lighters. She was booked her into the King County Jail for reckless burning.
  • 23rd and Union emergency: While this knife assault incident was going down at MLK’s Grocery Outlet on Friday, a few CHS readers noticed a major callout for SPD and Seattle Fire to an apartment building at 23rd and Union. According to emergency radio updates, police and fire were called to the area for reports of a person in crisis who had injured himself. Police and SFD were able to contact the person and transport him to the hospital.
  • Cal Anderson fascist rally: A huge police presence hugely outnumbered participants Sunday afternoon at Cal Anderson after organizers for a right-ring rally and march organized and were permitted for an event at the park that drew only a handful of participants. The late afternoon rally included a brief march of the half dozen or so participants around Broadway accompanied by dozens of police officers on hand to keep the way clear for the permitted event and to keep small groups of counter-protesters at bay. The event concluded shortly after it started and SPD units were turned loose with many reporting to duty to help with crowds and traffic at the Elizabeth Warren rally being held at the Seattle Center. There were no arrests reported during the Capitol Hill event.
  • Police reports: You may have noticed CHS has been running fewer crime round-ups this summer. In the beginning days of the site, we used to go to the East Precinct lobby to dig through paper versions of the latest crime reports. In recent years, access has been much improved with services like Tweets by Beat and Online Reports making SPD’s work as transparent as possible. After some Seattle Department of Information Technology work, the services became unavailable starting in May. Tweets by Beat has come back online. But the system for giving access to SPD’s incident reports remains offline. Unfortunately, SPD long ago phased out the paper and later CD-ROM process for accessing reports meaning the only way to get the information is to ask for it on a case by case basis from a busy Public Information team or submit a public disclosure requests that takes weeks at best. Let the Seattle DoIT folks know (email) you appreciate the return of Tweets by Beat and would also like to see online access to reports restored ASAP! You can also let them know on Twitter @SeattleITDept. Thanks!
