In a scene reminiscent of a much more precarious crash in 2008, a large box truck caused some traffic headaches Saturday afternoon after it crashed through a guardrail along Harvard Ave E at E Boston.
According to the Seattle Police brief on the 2:30 PM incident, the driver was headed up the steep slope of E Boston “when for an unknown reason the vehicle began rolling back down the hill, struck the guard rail and stopped.”
SPD reports that the tires of the truck “remained on solid ground” while the back hung over I-5. It was eventually towed away but two lanes of I-5 were closed during the response.
There were no reported serious injuries.
UPDATE: Here’s a look at the incident blocking the 2 right lanes of NB I-5 just south of SR 520 in #Seattle. IRT & WSP are on scene now and are coordinating with @SDOTtraffic. No ETA for reopening. Expect delays. pic.twitter.com/VvWY8o1s7I

SPD said the incident was still under investigation and that the truck’s driver would be cited if any violations were discovered.
Saturday’s incident with a box truck’s end hanging over I-5 was a reminder of another time a large vehicle ended up dangling over the freeway. In December of 2008 during a bout of icy, freezing temperature, two charter buses carrying students slid down Thomas and crashed onto Melrose with one of the buses dangling precariously over I-5 below. The students in that crash made it safely off the bus and nobody was seriously injured — either above, or below.

Um…that guardrail is on Melrose not Harvard (which is a block west of Broadway).
Melrose runs above I-5 south of Lakeview but up north where this happened, the border road is Harvard.
I would assume the police were going to have the trucks brakes and other systems inspected to determine a cause and whether to cite the driver or not. Anyone know if that has happened and what the results were?
