The future of the historic Knights of Columbus building lined up to be at the center of development along Union just above Pike won’t be more housing, the developer behind the project says.

The second of two new apartment buildings planned to wrap around the 106-year-old masonry clubhouse passed through the early phase of design review last month as planners were finally able to work out solutions to provide a better relationship between the planned development and neighboring E Pike buildings.

Andy Loos of SRM Development tells CHS that while the new developments surrounding the old building will create around 160 new housing units, the Knights of Columbus structure will undergo an adaptive reuse overhaul and required seismic upgrades for a future commercial use.

“The KOC building will not be residential,” Loos said. “We are looking for adaptive uses that keep the building pretty much as is.”

Early this year, the landmarks board approved SRM’s bid for protections on the building that will also shape its overhaul.

SRM paid $18.55 million for the 106-year-old clubhouse building and surrounding parking lots as the local Knights chapter sold off its valuable asset.

The Seattle Knights council said it planned “to contribute substantially all of the property sale proceeds and any other Club assets to a new and separate 501(c)(3) charitable organization” intended to “manage the contributed funds and the earnings to use them to financially assist other charitable or religious organizations which pursue worthy causes,” according to its sale listing.
