As Labor Day is behind us, some insist that summer is already over. Take the name of Volunteer Park Conservatory’s largest fundraiser of the year, which happens this Saturday: Fall Plant Sale. And the Miller Community Center asks to join their Back to School BBQ to “help us say farewell to summer with food, games, and community.”
Let the record show that CHS bristles at the notion of saying our summer farewells way, way too soon, and that there are 19 more days of official summer left. Ideally, you’d spend them doing the things here on the list below. Find more events and things to do on our calendar.
THURSDAY, Sep 5: The Black Tones must be one of the most exciting bands Seattle has spawned in recent years. After performances at the Capitol Hill Block Party and the new Port Townsend-based festival Thing, the blues-rock duo comes back to the neighborhood to celebrate the vinyl release of their first record, Cobain and Cornbread (which debuted this spring). Twins Eva and Cedric Walker, the musicians behind the band, will take over the DJ booth to celebrate and play some of their favorite tunes during The Black Tones Vinyl Release & DJ set by Eva & Cedric at Life on Mars. FRIDAY, Sep 6 – FRIDAY, Sep 13: The Washington Ensemble Theatre kicks off its 2019-20 season this Friday with the West Coast Premiere of Is God Is. The mythological western was the New York Times Critic’s Pick last year and won the 2016 Relentless Award from the American Playwriting Foundation. Writer Aleshea Harris took inspiration from spaghetti Westerns and Afro-punk to craft a postmodern myth about two sisters who travel from the South to California for a killing spree with a vengeance (blessed by their mother, who is also God). 12th Avenue Arts, 7.30 PM
SATURDAY, Sep 7: If you don’t know pop artist Derek Erdman, formerly of Seattle, now living in Chicago, this piece of random information about him might set the tone: Erdman was once served a cease and desist letter from Kylie Jenner’s attorney because he sold T-shirts with the text “Kill and Eat Kylie Jenner.” Erdman did not cease to sell the T-shirts but decided to ship them with a copy of the letter, plus a zucchini. “SQUASH THE RICH,” Erdman wrote on Instagram. Anyway, for this show, Erdman returns to Seattle for a three-hour “grab-and-go” style art show where everything is for sale for those hours only. Poet Sarah Galvin will be making balloon animals. SATURDAY, Sep 7 – SUNDAY, Sep 8: “Trashy Diva” is not just a supreme drag queen moniker or a general appellative/life goal to aspire to, but also a New Orleans-based producer of colorful, vintage-inspired dresses, shoes and lingerie in sizes 0-24. The brand, which has shops in Atlanta and New Orleans, comes to Seattle for a two-day Trashy Diva Trunk Show on Capitol Hill. Pretty Parlor, 11-7 PM and 12-6 PM
SUNDAY, Sep 8: The 2019 Capitol Hill Garage Sale is happening this year. Bargain-hunters, garage-less hoarders of useless crap and fine antiques (or fine crap and useless antiques), rejoice and join neighbors in the park for Seattle’s longest-running community-wide garage sale.
