On the List | Volunteer Park Halloween Pet Parade, Boys in Trouble dance, Iceland invades Liberty

Spooky season is upon us, so get ready for some eerie events on Capitol Hill (and Hilloween, which is back this year). Lusio Lights festival in Volunteer Park also makes an October appearance, though the light art installations and party amidst the tropical and other plants are more festive than frightening.

Next Monday at Pettirosso, The Traveling Chef Josh Ploeg cooks up a 4-course meal that must scare some meat and egg-lovers to death: it’s completely vegan. Dishes include “The Vampire’s Garden” salad with beet and tomato “aspic” dome, red pickles, black mushrooms and greens, a “Broomstick, Moonstick, Wrapped in Gloom Thick” pastry-wrapped yellow squash with mushroom gravy, as well as “A Ghast, A Ghoul, A Grave So Cruel” dark chocolate almond cake.

For what to do in the meantime, check out the events below or take a look at the CHS calendar.

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 16: Perhaps you haven’t heard of Knife Knights yet, but maybe, just maybe, you’ve heard of a band called Shabazz Palaces? 1/2 of the group, Ishmael Butler, teams up with Shabazz Palaces’ engineer Erik Blood under the Knife Knight umbrella. The result is ambitiously and unpredictably experimental music they describe as “soul and shoegaze, hip-hop and lush noise, bass, and bedlam.” For their Earshot Jazz Festival performance, the duo will be joined by KEXP DJ Stas Thee Boss and alto-sax expansionist Darius Jones. Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute, 7.30 PM – 10 PM

THURSDAY, Oct. 17: There have always been long lacunae in the publishing schedule of local poet and UW professor Richard Kenney. There was a fifteen-year gap between his first and second books of poetry, and his latest, Terminator, is his first in ten years. Witness Kenney’s intricate poems, which have won him numerous awards and grants, including the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation fellowship, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation fellowship, onstage with Seattle Arts & Lectures. Seattle Central Community College—Broadway Performance Hall, 7.30 PM – 9.30 PM

THURSDAY, Oct. 17 – SUNDAY, Oct. 20: As CHS reported earlier this month, Velocity Dance Center, “Seattle’s home for dance,” is in financial trouble. Supporters can donate to Velocity’s “Save Our Studio” campaign, but another way to help the dance center and the artists it champions is by attending performances. Sean Dorsey Dance’s Boys in Trouble is an excellent reason to head over to Velocity’s Founder’s Theatre this weekend. The dance performance examines masculinity by “applying a trans and queer sense onto intersectional questions of embodiment, violence, Black queer love, whiteness, shame and posturing.” Velocity Dance Center, 7.30 PM

FRIDAY, Oct. 18:  With shows across the country and its podcast and long-running NPR show, The Moth is arguably the country’s most famous open-mic storytelling event. There’s not much admin required to be a part of it: just show up to one of The Moth’s storySLAMs with a story ready to go, and hope your name gets picked. This month’s SLAM invites storytellers to talk about a time that “made their heart race.” Bloedel Hall, St. Mark’s, 8 PM – 10 PM

SATURDAY, Oct. 19: Events from Lusio Lights have become a regular part of the scenery around Volunteer Park. Saturday night, catch an indoor edition as Lusio Lights adds its glowing sculptures to the park’s classic conservatory. Volunteer Park Conservatory, 7 PM

SUNDAY, Oct. 20: Every year around this time, Iceland’s marketing powers that be invade Seattle for events and promotions highlighting the culture and creations of the tiny island nation. Sunday night, Taste of Iceland takes over 15th Ave E’s Liberty Bar for a one-night exploration of Icelandic cocktails. Liberty, 7 PM

Happy Hilloween! Bring your fur babies out for a drizzly but fun day of Halloween frolic in Volunteer Park. It’s time again for the Halloween Pet Parade in Volunteer Park. The Volunteer Park Trust’s annual event features pets in costumes, food trucks, prizes, and 20 vendor booths. Register your little goblin here. Volunteer Park, 11 AM
