Adaptogenic mushroom coffee joint Wunderground Cafe is planning a Hilloween debut.

The project from founder Jody Hall and chef Alyssa Lisle to create a new grain bowl, bone broth, and mushroom coffee cafe in the space formerly home to Hall’s E Pike Cupcake Royale location is set to open on Halloween, the newly launched Wunderground company announced.

CHS reported this summer on the new coffee company and its fusion of the “health benefits” from mushrooms like Lion’s Mane, Chaga, Reishi, and Cordyceps with the daily ritual and the “antioxidant properties” of coffee plus plans for a new flagship cafe and headquarters on E Pike.

UPDATE: Hall says Cupcake Royale’s neighborhood presence will, for now, remain as a pop-up in nearby Chophouse Row.

After a few months of construction, Wunderground Cafe is now ready to open in the previous cupcake shop, a “physical hub” for the new brand, “focusing on food that nourishes without depriving and encouraging people to explore and play within the space.”

The overhauled cafe will feature new art from prolific design firm Electric Coffin along the north wall of the cafe, plus a “curio cabinet” to feature artist collaborations, merchandise, and Wunderground beans and instant offerings for purchase. The cafe’s menu will include mushroom coffee creations, grain bowls, fermented foods, a bone broth infused with Lion’s Mane and Cordyceps, sandwiches, salads, and Wunderground-made pastries. “Both vegan and non-vegan dishes will be available, as well as those with mushrooms and those without,” Wunderground notes.

Wunderground’s flagship coffee and tea beverages will include espresso offerings “with the added bonus of adaptogenic mushrooms including house made vanilla bean syrup and dark chocolate syrup with an added 500mg punch of mushrooms to add to any drink.”

“In the spirit of our coffee, I want the Wunderground cafe menu to not only be good for people, but be approachable and accessible,” Lisle said in the press release on the opening plans. “Food, especially food that benefits your body, should taste incredible. Wellness isn’t about deprivation, it’s about celebration.”

Before its planned Halloween opening, Wunderground Cafe is holding a free launch celebration with food, drinks, and gifts Saturday and opening the event to guests who RSVP.

The Sunday fun will be very Hilloween-y with giveaways, free coffee, and drink specials — Hocus Pocus Witch’s Cold Brew, and “signature latte” The Brain Wash with Wunderground “Time to Rise” espresso, oat milk, and mushroom vanilla syrup.

The Wunderground Cafe opens soon at 1111 E Pike. You can learn more at wundergroundcoffee.com.
