On the List | Bat ‘n’ Rouge, Jockstraps and Glitter, Capitol Hill Block Party and Off Block Party

IMG_9577The Capitol Hill Block Party revs up on Friday afternoon and runs through Sunday evening in the Pike/Pine core. You can hate the insanity or love — but you should definitely respect the one-of-a-kind, three-day music fest. Not a fan? CHBP is definitely not the only thing happening this weekend on Capitol Hill.

Just a block over from Block Party, queer athletes and their biggest fans will take over Bobby Morris field at Cal Anderson Park for two days of action.

Sunday brings a bumped-up on the calendar edition of the annual Bat ‘n’ Rouge softball game pitting Dykes vs. Drag Queens in a battle royale on the diamond. The fun starts at 1 PM. Bring cash to bribe the umpire!

jockstraps and glitterSaturday, the costumed fundraiser-kickball game Jockstraps and Glitter returns to Cal Anderson Park for a “ribald, and REVEALING afternoon hosted by DonnaTella Howe on the bullhorn to keep things going. Watch us run, kick, catch, and tumble with the rugby boys, who’ll do ANYTHING for a buck.”

Thursday, you can check out the videOasis quarterly showcase which brings “the best new PNW music videos out of the Internet ether and throws them big on the silver screen, with musicians and directors in attendance to spill the goods on the process of collaboration.” Prefunc in the bar at Northwest Film Forum with free tequila tasting starting at 7pm.

Art Deco Japan film Lady and the Beard screens Friday night at Volunteer Park Amphitheater at 8:30. This 1931 silent film will be accompanied by a live musical score performance. See our write up here on five weeks of outdoor film screenings this summer on the Hill. 

Participants in Velocity Dance Center’s Strictly Seattle – an intensive 3-week immersion into the Seattle dance scene – bring their culminating performances to Broadway Performance Hall. See super-charged new works by zoe | juniper, Pat Graney, Bennyroyce Royon, Jody Kuehner, Shannon Stewart, Rosa Vissers + Bryon Carr created during the three-week Strictly Seattle Summer Dance Intensive + New shorts from KT Niehoff’s Dance Film Track Friday (evening) or Saturday (matinee and evening).

Vermillion has organized three days of Off Block Party events, which include live music, dj dance party, and a BBQ.They’re located outside of the CHBP fence and all events are free.

In the CD, Outdoor Trek continues at Blanche Lavizzo Park and on 15th Ave E Friday, you’ll find a Nuflours gluten free bakery pop-up.

On the List | Central Greenway drop in, Outdoor Trek, one-act play fest, art shows, casual opera

cangFind out more about the middle section of the Central Area Neighborhood Greenway planned for the 23rd Avenue corridor at SDOT’s drop in session Thursday 4:00 – 6:30pm at Miller Community Center. This drop in session will focus on the stretch between E John and E Roanoke. Read more about the Central Area Greenway project in our past write ups.

Star-trek-2014-webOutdoor Trek launches their 2014 season on Friday at the Blanche Lavizzo Park in the Central District. Free, fun, and family friendly, Outdoor Trek brings original Star Trek episodes to life in a park setting. This year the troupe presents “Mirror, Mirror”, in which Captain James T. Kirk and crew are trapped in a parallel universe. Performances are at 7 pm on Saturdays and 2 pm on Sundays, on July 19, 20, 26, 27, and August 2 and 3.

Join us for our fourth episode in the park, when our intrepid crew encounters bearded Spock and agonizers! (Don’t worry, it’s still safe for kids!) Bring a picnic! Bring a costume! Bring your evil twins! Admission is, as always, FREE! This year’s production is brought to you entirely by your generous donations of last year.

Eclectic Theater is host to Past Curfew, a festival of one-act plays running Friday through Sunday. The festival is produced by youth-run Young Americans Theatre ltd galleryCompany, Tickets run $8 – $12 and can be purchased here to guarantee a seat or at the theater box office prior to the 8pm curtain time.  

Ltd Gallery opens a new exhibit, Fantasy in the City, A Magical Art Show, on Friday night. Sci-fi and fantasy-themed art await your arrival.

poster of the weekSaturday, St. John’s Bar opens a music poster show curated by Aaron Huffman and Ghost Gallery‘s Laurie Kearney. The POTW! Poster of the Week show features gig art and other original works by artists who have been featured in the POTW column in The Stranger.

Capitol Cider is bringing in the big guns on Sunday at 7pm  for Opera on Tap: American Beauties. “Local opera singers let their hair down and bring you into what feels like an after hours back stage party, singing some of opera’s best known and little known pieces in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.”

Wish Big Mario’s a happy 4th birthday on Sunday.

On the List | Capitol Hill Art Walk, Volunteer Park Picnic + Outdoor Theater Fest, Bastille Bash

Prime time summer weather is here! So are lots of events and happenings on and around Capitol Hill this weekend.

Ryan WeatherlyThursday offers the monthly Capitol Hill Art Walk and the second annual Volunteer Park Picnic. Art walk highlights include the testing of a Rube Goldberg-inspired machine plus collecting of stories of failure at The Project Room, curated videos on loop in the Northwest Film Forum lobby, and a multimedia installation entitled The Family Connection by Grant Rehnberg at Fred Wildlife Refuge. Do both!  The Asian Art Museum offers free admission during the art walk and it is conveniently located across from the Volunteer Park Picnic. The picnic has free stuff too: music, ice cream, lemonade, and cupcakes. spurning_at_the_wedding_595The annual Seattle Outdoor Theatre Festival fills Volunteer Park with drama. Eight theater companies stage 14 performances of 10 plays using the amphitheater and the museum lawn. All performances are free; here’s the schedule of performances so you can dream in midsummer without much ado or love’s labour lost. Sorry. (Not really.)

bastille-day-2300Seattle Francophiles look forward to the annual Bastille Bash in Madison Valley, taking place on Saturday on East Madison Street. The Bastille Bash and features bites, sips, live music, performances, and more.

Also on Saturday, stop into The Cuff to wish a very happy 18-year birthday to The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Abbey of St. Joan. The charitable organization will be announcing their annual grant awards before the nuns get too naughty. Starts at 7pm.

naamHead to Judkins St. Cafe on Sunday for Neighborhood Night, 5 – 8pm. There will be raffles, crafts, ballpark snacks and beverages.  The event is is produced by the Northwest African American Museum staff and supporters in conjunction with their current exhibition “Pitch Black: African American Baseball in Washington.” the cafe is located at 2608 South Judkins St, and there’s $10 suggested donation.

On the List | Independence Day Picnic + fireworks, Ada’s Night Out, Tanabata Festival

What are you doing for the 4th? How about joining the High 5 Pie-eating contest, or listening free music, or having a free hot dog and root beer float? Head to Cal Anderson Park on Friday 12pm – 5pm for the 12th Annual Independence Day Picnic This fun community event includes kid activities, a pet-human lookalike contest, and more. See our write up for more details. The 4th also brings Plum Cafe’s annual vegan 4th of July BBQ, 2 to 5 PM at 324 15th Ave E.

Later on Friday, catch the fireworks show over Lake Union from one of many prime viewing spots on the west side of Capitol Hill. Here are our suggestions for best spots for viewing. We did the research so you don’t have to. You’re welcome! Add your best picture to our CHS Flickr group.

adas night outBoth Worlds Two, a new animation film by Stefan Gruber premieres at Ada’s Technical Books on Thursday in the first edition of the store’s new evening series Ada’s Night Out. Included in the $12 admission ticket are “a spread of hors d’oeuvres made from fresh, seasonal produce purchased from local growers, as well as exclusive access to all the features of Ada’s, including our books, coffee, beer and wine. At 9pm we start the screening of Both Worlds Two, followed by Stefan talking about his work and answering questions.

Tanabata_smSunday, the Seattle Japanese Garden in the Arboretum  welcomes you to the Tanabata Festival:

“Tanabata at the Garden is a beautiful day filled with origami-making, and wish writing. As in Japan, Tanabata at the Seattle Japanese Garden is a celebration of the legend of two separated lovers, represented by two stars which only meet once a year in July. Bring your friends and family and hang your origami on the bamboo by our gates, we’d love to see you here in your kimono!”

On the List | PrideFest, Trans* Pride, Pride rugby, Tiny Baby Talk Show, Carnevil

9168303687_0fafc6e9f8_b (1)This weekend is all about Pride, with Saturday being the big blowout for Pride events on Capitol Hill. Get your rainbow on and join your neighbors in celebrating and supporting the LGBTQ community in all its colors.

Trans* Pride meets at Seattle Central at 5pm on Friday to prep for the  march starting at 6pm. The march concludes with a rally at Cal Anderson Park featuring speakers, food trucks, and live music. .

9170612438_8fceabd650_bCapitol Hill Pride Festival street fair takes over Broadway on Saturday from E John north to E Roy for the Pride weekend street fair, 10am to 11pm.  Multiple stages will be spread along the route for live music and performances throughout the day, plus there’s a doggy-drag contest, and vendors, non-profit booths, adult beverage corrals, and more.

Now in its second year, Seattle PrideFest Family Day and Street Festival on Saturday offers live bands, games, kids activities and more at Cal Anderson Park, noon – 5pm. All activities are free. Family Day offers kid and family-friendly entertainment, games, and fun: Bubbles, Drag Queen Storytime, kids music, and games like a balloon toss contest.” Adjacent to the park on 11th Ave starting at 4pm is the related Street Fest with 20 food trucks, a beer garden, and DJs. 

Prom Dress Rugby 2013 @ Cal Anderson Park in Seattle, WARemember to take  time out on Saturday to root for the best dressed player in the Prom Dress Rugby match, playing on Saturday on Bobby Morris field at Cal Anderson Park. The game starts around 2pm and runs approximately 2 hours.

bloodsquadThere’s non-Pride (although we’re sure the organizers are proud) events this weekend too.

Tiny Baby Talk Show at Scratch Deli on Saturday includes a performance by the Fleet Foxes includes a joke that we fell for.

Annex Theatre hosts a new Bloodsquad production of improv-horror on Friday and Saturday. Carnevil: “Nobody seemed to remember who they came with, or if their numbers had decreased by the time they parted. They had all forgotten that when the Carnival moves from town to town, it always takes a little something with it.”

On the List | Gate to Nowhere, A Drink for the Kids, Of Mice and Men, Lisbon Traviata

ramp to nowhereThe 520 ramps to nowhere in the Arboretum – a decades-long favorite jump off point of swimming teens – are the star of the public art installation “Gate to Nowhere” opening on Thursday with a party 6 – 9pm.

“The Gate to Nowhere celebrates Seattle’s unfinished freeways by reflecting their provocative beauty, unintended urbanism and legacy of 1960s citizen activism. This temporary art installation is [on] Seattle’s infamous ‘Ramp to Nowhere’ in Montlake. The concept is simple: wrap a single support pier with mirror to reflect surroundings of ‘nowhere’.”

There will be a few boats available to borrow during the party so you can paddle up and get close for your daily selfie. Access the party off Lake Washington Blvd near 26th Ave E and E Miller St, or you can rent a canoe from the UW Intramurals Center to approach by water.

vera projectThe Capitol Hill Community Council meets on Thursday to elect new leaders. You can read candidate position statements here, and show up at the Cal Anderson Shelterhouse at 6:30 to participate in the election process.

Have A Drink for the Kids and raise funds for the all-ages music and art venue Vera Project at Linda’s on Thursday, Redwood on Friday, or Comet Tavern on Saturday. It’s a great excuse to have a cocktail or three ‘CAUSE IT IS FOR THE KIDS. Each night features a unique set of music/art celebrity hosts, plus the drinking at Linda’s and Redwood offer raffle drawings.

Watch the World Cup with your closest friends at these fine Capitol Hill venues. USA v Portugal on Sunday!

Traviata-ImageEclectic Theater‘s production of the John Steinbeck classic “Of Mice and Men” opens on Friday and continues through July 12th.

Theatre22 launched their first annual Pride Series production for–and during–Pride Month. The play “Lisbon Traviata” is staged at Richard Hugo House through June 28th and is described as “Catty comedy meets operatic tragedy.”

On the List | Garage Sale Day, Pride Picnic, World Cup, architecture tour, Lucky Them

There’s no reason to leave the neighborhood this weekend, friends. On Thursday, the Capitol Hill Art Walk is throwing a big party for the walk’s five-year anniversary and we wrote about it. The World Cup starts Thursday, and here’s where you can watch World Cup matches around the Hill.
Capitol-Hill-Seattle-Garage-Sale-2013-6 Saturday, buy your neighbor’s stuff during the Capitol Hill Garage Sale Day, and then head to Volunteer Park for the 5th Annual Seattle Pride Picnic.

Pride-05More than 30 yard sales have registered on to be on the Garage Sale map, but like in past years, look for pop-up sales all over Capitol Hill (and the CD).  New for 2014: the community sale area is now hosted in Cal Anderson Park. One stop shopping. Official Capitol Hill Garage Sale sale are 9am – 4pm.

The 5th annual Seattle Pride Picnic on Saturday is all-ages appropriate with live entertainment and kids activities all day, 11am – 5pm at Volunteer Park.  You can bring your own picnic if you must, but we recommend taking advantage of the  $1 Picnic Lunch  which includes hot dogs, side dishes, refreshments and dessert if you can.

Also on Saturday: the Seattle Architecture Foundation tour of Pike/Pine: “Change on an Urban Scale” (10am, register to secure a spot), and Bubble Battle Seattle, an all ages bubble “fight” 3 – 5pm at Cal Anderson Park’s Teletubby Hill.  Recycle electronics, appliances, BBQs, and more at Central Lutheran Church on 11th, 9am – 2pm.

Happy 11th Birthday, Retail Therapy! Party on Thursday night with DJ Riz Rollins.  Happy 6th Anniversary, Vermillion! Party on Saturday night with champagne, cake, and music from Wizdumb.

Seattle filmmaker Megan Griffith’s new film Lucky Them opens Friday at Northwest Film Forum and runs through Thursday June 19th. This fictional account of a jaded music journalist (starring Toni Collette and Thomas Haden Church) is set in Seattle and was shot on and around Capitol Hill last year.

On the List | Capitol Hill Clean Sweep, Soccer Jam, Parke Diem in Volunteer Park

The annual Capitol Hill Clean Sweep community service event hits the streets and common areas of the neighborhood on Sunday to get it sparkling clean.

Join up by meeting in Cal Anderson Park at 10am to register, eat breakfast, and pick up a t-shirt and cleaning supplies. Entertainment and lunch will also be provided. (Secret private message to new Hill residents: Clean Sweep is a great event in which to meet your new neighbors.) The Clean Sweep is also part of the start of an entire month of Pride on Capitol Hill.

Stevens-Carnival-2013-16The annual Stevens Carnival at Stevens Elementary is the unofficial start of the countdown to summer for North Capitol Hill public elementary students. This year’s Carnival is Friday, 4pm – 8pm and is open to families from all around the neighborhood. As in previous years, expect fun, frolic, and a little mayhem as kids zealously join in the activities such as walnut smashing, hay pile treasure hunting, and squirt gun race contests for prizes. It takes place at the Seattle University fields on Saturday 9am – 4pm and is open to all recreational or competitive players ages 18 and over.  “The Cap Hill Soccer Jam is a full day, 64-team, 4-v-4 street soccer tournament for adults and offers both recreational and competitive brackets. The event is a fundraiser for Street Soccer Seattle, whose mission is to foster the camaraderie, community, and confidence that is central to the sport of soccer to empower homeless individuals to find greater success and peace in their lives.”   Register here.

Saturday, visit Gay City for the third annual Word Play festival, a one-day spoken word festival including two workshops, a performance, and an artists reception.

The 4th annual Parke Diem: An Urban Culture Festival takes place on Saturday at the Volunteer Park Amphitheater, 11am – 8pm. This free event’s goal is to to bring together music, art, and community in a park setting. There will be vendors, live art making, and DJ music. New this year is a Kids Zone with activities for the youngsters.

On Sunday 12- 2pm only,  recycle your electronics at the temporary recycle station set up on 11th Ave next to Cal Anderson Park. You can get documents shredded too.

Finally, Thursday night at 7 PM, neighbors and community members will gather near the site of last weekend’s double homicide at 29th and King for a vigil to mark the deaths of 27-year-old Ahmed Said and 23-year-old Dwone Anderson-Young.

On the List | Debacle Fest, Lez Stand Up, Ada’s 4th, Taste of Greece, ZAPP screen printing

The brotherly pairing of I-5 Shores and Eastlake will bring together Cairo, LoFi, Black Lodge, and Victory Lounge to host this year’s Debacle Fest Friday and Saturday nights.

1981747_10152389745486435_2517687400175983210_nThe Gay City Arts program activates their Calamus Auditorium this weekend to showcase  Lez Stand Up comedy. “Lez Stand Up is a Portland-based lesbian comedy troupe with a rotating cast of local comics. The troupe joins forces with some Seattle’s best queer comics, all of whom are doing their best not to eat bananas in public. 90 minutes of pure joy, featuring sketch comedy AND stand up.”
Performances are intended for 18+ and includes mature subject matter. Tickets are $12, and performances start at 8 pm, Friday through Sunday.

Travel season is here, and Joyful Noise: All Our Bags are Packed can start you off with a good travel-related earworm or two. The concerts on Saturday (8 pm) and Sunday (3 pm)  at Seattle First Baptist Church feature “incredible songs that have inspired us and reminded us of the thrill of exploration and, even better, the warmth of coming home again.

ZAPP, the ‘zine hub and archive formerly located in Richard Hugo House, hosts a screen print drop in on Friday, 4 – 8 pm at Black Coffee Co-Op. They’re bringing the supplies and screens, you bring fabric or paper to produce ZAPP or Black Coffee Co-op stickers and patches.

Sunday, stop in to Ada’s Technical Books on 15th between 4 pm and 8 pm to congratulate owners Danielle and Dave on the 4th anniversary of Ada’s and eat some free cake. We talked with Danielle about Ada’s opening way back when.  My how Ada’s grown!

Opa! Bite of Greece returns to Greek Orthodox Church of the Assumption on 13th Avenue. this weekend.  If you have eaten your stash of frozen baklava, reload on the sweet walnut and honey desert , along with souvlaki, gyros, and more on Friday evening, Saturday or Sunday. The event also features music, dance and crafts.

The fair is free and open to the public and “celebrates diversity through live music, food, dance, games, booths, a Treasure hunt game, a showcase of Traditional fashions from all over the world.” The Flavr Blue plays at 12:30 PM, we’re told.

Updated-Rain-Fest-Poster600pixMusic fans not going to Sasquatch may enjoy the 5th annual Rain Fest at Neumos, with  bands in the “hardcore” genre lined up to play Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The west coast premier of a new play, queerSpawn, opens at Eclectic Theater on Friday. The “playful” storyline follows a “heterosexual cisgendered teenage boy with lesbian mothers who struggles with surviving high school in a small town.”

Thursday night, you can get involved with important neighborhood issues as the Capitol Hill Community Council meets at 6:30 PM at the Cal Anderson Shelterhouse. CHS wrote here about the group’s call for new leaders — and its outsized impact at City Hall. Thursday also brings the monthly meeting of the East Precinct Advisory Council. Meeting details here.

Also Thursday, you can catch the Capitol Hill web series on the big screen at Central Cinema.

Saturday, head to 14th and Pine with the kids to take advantage of free Family Day activities at storefronts between the 13th and 14th blocks of Pine, 10am – 3pm.

The Seattle International Film Festival continues through June 8 at the Egyptian Theatre and the Harvard Exit theater on Capitol Hill. (There are screenings at other theaters in town too, but who cares about those? jk) Of particular interest to hillites is the Megan Griffiths flick Lucky Them,  much of which was filmed around the neighborhood last spring and summer. You can catch the final SIFF screening of Lucky Them at the Egyptian on Friday.
