Capitol Hill Inspires Award-Winning Architectural Design

Lyric-1Runberg Architecture Group recently won seven Gold Nugget Awards from the Pacific Coast Builders Conference, including four awards for two projects located on Capitol Hill – The Sanctuary and Lyric.

The architects at the Seattle-based firm, who specialize in urban mixed-use housing and adaptive reuse projects, take a unique approach to gathering neighborhood input during the design process. This collaborative methodology is a significant time investment, but ultimately augments the design, adding credibility and building community. According to principal architect, Brian Runberg, the approach creates an effective design review process, and significant benefit to a project.

The Gold Nugget Awards honor creative achievement in architectural design and land use planning for residential, commercial and industrial projects.

Runberg had a notable and sizeable showing with Best Residential Project of the Year for The Sanctuary along with six additional awards. The total list of awards includes:

    • Best Residential Project of the Year –The Sanctuary

    • Best Mixed Use Project Award of Merit – Expo

    • Best Mixed Use Project Award of Merit – Lyric

Located on Capitol Hill, The Sanctuary combines historic preservation and adaptive reuse to revive a century-old church into 12 distinctively modern townhomes that respect the beauty and the significance of the house of worship while providing environmental performance and durable features. The seven Gold Nugget judges said, “The judges were dazzled by The Sanctuary…This project sets a shining example of what adaptive reuse is all about. Its Project of the Year award is richly deserved.”

The Lyric is a 235-unit mixed-use development in Capitol Hill where traditional brick apartments blend with the contemporary buildings. The old meets new story is visually evident in Lyric, such as the terra cotta façade remnants in a courtyard fountain versus the first-class amenities of a fitness center and a yoga room.

In the last six years, Runberg Architecture Group has wona total of 18 Gold Nugget Awards.The-Sanctuary-4
