UPDATE: 11:57 AM: Two people were reported on the roof of Holy Names Academy attempting to enter the building early this morning around 2:00 AM, according to Seattle Police Department spokesperson Mark Jamieson. King County Sherriff's Guardian 1 helicopter was available to assist in the search to provide an aerial view and use its infrared system to look for the suspects, Jamieson said. According to Jamieson, arriving officers caught one of the suspects inside Holy Names and placed him under arrest on investigation of burglary. The person arrested was a juvenile male and Jamieson said he didn't yet have details about whether the boy was attempting to steal something from the all-girls school or if we simply apprehended inside the building. Both scenarios can lead to burlglary charges, Jamieson said.
ORIGINAL REPORT 2:42 AM: A manhunt is underway in the neighborhood surrounding Holy Names Academy at 21st Ave E and Aloha. Unconfirmed but information from the scanner indicates that there has been a burglary at the...
Catching up on our blotter duties, here are some of the more interesting cases handled by the SPD in the East Precinct in the past two weeks. A few have been touched on by other outlets but fairly certain you won't find the actual reports the journalists are getting their information from anywhere but here. And from the East Precinct front desk, of course.
CHS noted that there had been no police report filed in this alleged hate crime that occurred the first night of the Capitol Hill Block Party when the Seattle PostGlobe first reported on it. Since that time, the victim contacted police to report the beating and the assault is being investigated as a bias crime. Police are seeking the five suspects. Here is the incident report:
A man was arrested in an armed robbery at Summit and Howell in which a twenty dollar bill was taken from the victim. The alleged knifepoint robbery occurred on Sunday, August 2 around 5:30 PM. The victim described the suspect to police as a black male in his late 30s wearing a black shirt...
CHS received a tip about an arrest in this armed robbery at 10th Ave at Highland from early July in which a woman was cut on the arm by a knife-wielding assailant. CHS receives lots of tips (chs@capitolhillseattle.com with yours) and we don't and can't follow up on all of them but this one had the earmarks of credibility: a name, a phone number, details. But a call to the Seattle Police Department refuted the rumor. According to SPD spokesperson Mark Jamieson, there have been no arrests in the case but the investigation is ongoing. He had no explanation for what might have started the rumor.
UPDATE: The $1 value came from the report but might have been just a filler amount for the officer completing the report. I've asked SPD for clarification. Regardless, one buck doesn't make any sense for an entire ounce so revising the headline. Does the new amount change your thoughts on the incident?
UPDATE: Here's some additional info and a good note for future crime report perusal from SPD spokesperson Mark Jamieson:
On the new reporting system it is important to read the narrative in its entirety. The total amount of marijuana was 27.2 grams, which, as you can imagine is way more than $1.00. Here is the explanation for the why $1.00 was entered:
All property entered on a property report must have a value. Either enter the estimated value, $1.00 for UNKNOWN value, or $2.00 for NO value.
Since it was unknown what the exact value was, the officer chose to enter $1.00 for UNKNOWN. The value could be anywhere $270.00 on (since marijuana prices currently run anywhere from $10 to $20 a gram, depending on location, quality, demand, etc.) Hope that explains it for you.
This week, in the interest of diversity and in celebration of this weekend's Seattle Hempfest 2009, we bring you another tale of the Seattle Police Department's war on drugs: A $1 (to $270 depending on quality) marijuana bust in Dick's parking lot
The Seattle Team selected the 23rd Avenue Corridor, located in the city’s Central District, for the initiative’s pilot area because of residential and business communities ongoing concerns and requests for action; supporting SPD data; both the Seattle Police’s East Precinct Commander and the City Attorney East Precinct Liaison believed the project fit with the communities desire to try a new approach; the area contains many active community members, business, and social services providers who could be partners in the effort; and the area had all the attributes needed to best replicate the successes in North Carolina.
The new approach? Prepare rock solid cases against suspected dealers and hit them with an ultimatum: Stop selling drugs or have the book thrown at you and, probably, go to jail.
Will it work? One of the dealers who participated in the community meeting element of the new program last Thursday night was busted the next day, neighbors say. That leaves at least 15 others who might make the choice to go straight.
UPDATE 8/10/09 12:50 PM: Seattle Police Department spokesperson Mark Jamieson says Sunday's incident is not currently being investigated by the bias crimes unit because there is no evidence that the beating was motivated by the person's gender or sexual preference.
The incident report from Sunday afternoon by the responding officer details that the victim and suspect were found sitting near each other on the sidewalk near Howell and Bellevue. The victim was bleeding from the head and mouth but the emergency crew who responded said his injuries were minor. The report did not indicate if the victim was transgendered as was reported by the e-mail CHS received about the incident (see the original report, below).
Three eyewitnesses including the person who called 911 to report the attack said they saw the suspect hold the victim down on the sidewalk and punch the man repeatedly in the head. No witnesses reported hearing any bias related statements from the suspect and the suspect said he knew the victim and that he thought...
Sorry, kids, but you're going to have to keep those iPods hidden away when on the street. This from a Seattle University security e-mail:
SU Department of Public Safety (DPS) was advised by Seattle Police of a reported strong armed robbery, which occurred Friday evening, August 7, 2009. This incident occurred near 10th Ave and E. Union (approximately one block north of campus). Police information described that at approximately 6:30 pm the male victim was approached by a male suspect, who suddenly grabbed the victim’s I-Pod. The suspect then ran westbound towards Broadway where he disappeared into the crowd. Police searched the area and no suspect matching the description was located.
The suspect was described as a male in his 20’s. He had a very light skinned color complexion, was approximately 5’9” tall, 150 lbs, with long blonde hair.
The victim reported the suspect was wearing a black jacket, blue jeans, and a pair of sunglasses flipped up on his forehead.
Or, on the flipside, is this really about what people happen to be carrying in their pockets these days? If the year was 1979 with a 2009 economy, would we be talking about being careful when you walk the street carrying one of these?
Be it '79 or '09, SU offers these safey tips:
Be alert to your surroundings, any signs of a disturbance, and nearby individuals at all times.
Keep your head up, eyes open, and be confidently looking around yourself at all times.
If any spot or sense any concerns for your safety arises, don’t hesitate in leaving the area immediately.
Walk on well-lit arterials where other pedestrians are present and/or businesses are open.
The following are based on incident reports from the Seattle Police Department’s East Precinct. They represent the officers’ accounts of the events described.
On the afternoon of Saturday, Aug. 1, officers on a routine foot patrol through Cal Anderson Park were approached by a man who complained that another man was drinking beer in the park in clear violation of park rules and Seattle law. Not only that, but that man, who was drinking a Pabst Blue Ribbon 40-ouncer, was being rude as well. Officers were directed to the suspect, who was sitting on the “grassy knoll” just north of the Bobby Morris Playfield. He was in his mid-40s and was clearly intoxicated. At first glance he seemed to be offering sips of beer to his pit bull. Concerned that the pit bull might attack the officers if physical force became necessary, they asked the man to step away from his dog. The man refused and became belligerent. They grabbed him by his side. But he broke free and ran away, a process that was repeated several times before officers...
First, let me say that sharing this Seattle Police incident report isn't an attempt to add to any freaking out over the kinds of illegal stuff that goes on in Cal Anderson Park even though the Slog just churned up this report of a 'roving gang of hooligans' supposedly committing acts of thuggery in the park at night. It's not a call for increased police patrols or more surveillance cameras (though we are checking in with City Hall to ask them a few questions about the efficacy of Cal Anderson's spy cams).
Instead, CHS is running this report because it sheds light on something we know happens in the park -- people doing drugs -- and describes the small drug bust with more detail than the average Seattle Police Department report. I'm ready for Mike with Curls to take me to task for covering another small crime. I'll take the heat. These things happened on the Hill. The way they occurred is interesting to me and I'm here to report interesting stuff. I'm not here only to cover what the TV helicopter camera crews say is news. Also not here to glamorize the cops and bad guys thing -- the details do a good job of making sure that won't happen -- but to understand a bit more about the culture and logistics behind an every-day drug bust in Cal Anderson Park. (Anybody know a better way to embed a PDF? Flickr slideshow is a pain -- make sure to hit pause in bottom control bar)
While some complain that Starbucks is stealing the look and feel of indie businesses on 15th Ave, one woman recently turned the table on the coffee giant by making off with a few hundred dollars of Starbucks drinks and pastries over a two-month period until she was caught and fired two weeks ago from her job at Safeway. From the East Precinct police files comes this tale of employee theft and Frappuccinos at the corner of 15th and E. John:
On 7-21-09 at 1600, while working uniformed police security for Safeway at E. John St, the store afternoon manager introduced me to [redacted] who is internal security for Safeway. [redacted] told me that... Safeway store manager received a complaint that the suspect (Safeway employee barista in the store Starbucks Kiosk) had been taking pastries and blended drinks routinely at the end of her shift from the Starbucks Kiosk inside Safeway at [E John] and not paying. [redacted] told me he reviewed the in store tapes (entered into evidence) and witnessed that the suspect did...
The release of a police artist sketch this week has so far produced no big breaks in the hunt for a Capitol Hill rape suspect who struck in the late hours of the 4th of July holiday and sexually assaulted a 20-year-old woman in her 12th Ave apartment.
Investigators are urging anybody in the area of Cal Anderson park or 12th and Olive late on Independence Day to share any information they think might be useful. The sexual assault unit can be reached at (206) 684-5575.
"This is on the night of July 4th -- just after midnight on the 4th of July. There were a lot of people out -- somebody may have seen something. Anything is valuable at this point," Seattle Police Department spokesperson Jeff Kappel said.
Here is the SPD bulletin with a full description of the man the police are looking for:
On July 5th at approximately 3:00 a.m. an unknown suspect entered the victim’s apartment in the 1700 block of 12th Avenue through an unlocked window. The suspect sexually assaulted the 20-year-old female victim inside her apartment and fled the scene. The suspect remains at large. Seattle Police Sexual Assault Detectives are asking for assistance in identifying the suspect.
The suspect is described as a white male in his late teens or early 20’s, six feet tall, chubby build with very short hair. He was last seen wearing a dark short-sleeve t-shirt, dark cargo shorts and dark running shoes (See the attached sketch of the suspect).
Anyone recognizing the suspect or who may have information about this individual should call the Seattle Police Sexual Assault Unit at (206) 684-5575 and refer to this incident. Those wishing to remain anonymous are encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or text CRIMES (274637) and preface your text information with TIP486.
Two stories of recent violence against homosexuals here in the city. In one on the streets of Capitol Hill, the victims claim they were targeted because they are gay. In the other, authorities have determined there was 'no evidence of a bias crime.'
Robert Harkins, who was the face of the gay rights organization Hands Off Washington in the 1990s, knows that gay-bashing occurs.
He wasn’t expecting it Friday night, though. Not as he walked with a friend Friday night. Not on Capitol Hill – the traditional center of gay life in Seattle.
But at about 11 p.m., Harkins, who is now the state’s deputy superintendent in the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, said he watched his friend get shoved to the ground on Pike Street and three men kick his friend in the face while yelling anti-gay and anti-Hispanic slurs.

Seattle police say they have captured the suspect in this week's South Park knife attack who they say killed one woman and sent another to the hospital with serious injuries. According to the report, Isaiah M.K. Kalebu, 23, was spotted by a Metro bus driver Friday night. The driver contacted police who took Kalebu into custody inside Magnuson Park.
Kalebu is suspected of stabbing Teresa Butz to death and wounding her partner at their South Park home.
Just hours earlier, police released this video to help track down a 'person of interest' in the case.
Below is the bulletin from the SPD announcing the arrest:
SEATTLE – Seattle Police homicide detectives have identified a suspect in the July 19th South Park murder/attempted murder case. Probable cause exists for police officers to arrest Isaiah...
This is happening pretty far from Capitol Hill but it has much of the East Precinct tied up so wanted to let you know about what's going on. Central District News is covering a police standoff where police believe suspects are holed up in a home on 32nd Ave S after a shooting. CDNews says that around 8:33 PM, a police radio report indicated a man had been shot in the head by another man with an AK-47. As of 9:30 PM, police had surrounded the area and closed nearby streets to traffic.
Here are the 911 call notes from a most suspicious of suspicious circumstances investigation that went down on Boylston Ave E Sunday afternoon around 1:50 PM:
Investigation of witchcraft, unknown suspect. Scarf is located there now.
According to the SPD report filed on the incident, responding officers found a woman waiting for them at the address. She told the officers that she believed somebody had been practicing witchcraft outside her second floor condominium window.
The woman said she had seen "a gentleman in the tree right outside her bedroom window the night prior," the report states. The woman said an unidentified man was in the tree approximately 25 feet off the ground. She said she couldn't remember what the man was wearing but, the next morning, she saw a black scarf hanging in the tree where the man had been. She said there was something left inside the scarf but she couldn't tell what it was.
The responding officers could, indeed, see the mysterious black scarf. But whatever the man had left in the scarf...
Seattle police tonight released this sketch of the man they believe attacked two women with a knife as they slept in their home early Sunday morning in the 700 block of S. Rose St. One woman died in the attack and the other was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
The suspect is described as a black male, 20s to early 30s, 5 feet 11 inches to 6 feet tall, thin muscular build, a thin mustache, and “nappy” hair, according to the department reports.
Anyone with information regarding this crime is urged to call the SPD tip line at (206) 233-5000 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or text TIP486 with a message to CRIMES (274637).
Seattle police are looking for a masked man who robbed a victim of his cell phone, iPod, backpack and wallet Sunday night around 9 PM near Seattle Central Community College. Here is the report from SPD. It's light on suspect details so we'll give them a call to see what else we can shake out.
Update: A SPD spokesperson provided the following suspect description information. Police are looking for a black male in his 20s, around 5'10" and 200 pounds. He was wearing a tan sweatshirt and blue jeans at the time of the robbery. His face was partially covered by some type of mask or bandanna.
Armed Robber at large
On 7/19/09, at approximately 9:00 p.m., the victim was walking northbound in the 1700 block of Harvard Av. on the west side of the street, when he observed the suspect approaching him from the north. The victim stepped aside on the sidewalk to allow the suspect to pass. The suspect stepped with him to the same side and stopped.
The victim saw that the suspect was pointing a black handgun at him. The suspect was also wearing a partial face mask or black bandanna over the lower portion of his face.
The victim ran northbound to a store in the 100 block of Broadway Av E and called 911. An area check for the suspect was not successful.
The suspect demanded money. When the victim said he did not have any, the suspect demanded his cell phone, IPOD and backpack, which contained his wallet. The victim complied and gave the suspect the items. The suspect then walked off southbound on Harvard Av from E Olive St.
Police continue to seek a suspect in an armed robbery that occurred near Volunteer Park on June 29th in which a man used a gun to rob a woman of her iPod. That suspect was described as a black teenager. Meanwhile, on July 8, a woman was injured during an attempted robbery that sparked a large manhunt around Broadway in the early morning hours. A knife was used as the weapon in that incident. That investigation is also ongoing, according to the SPD.
Here's the latest from the East Precinct's arrest and incident reports:
Reunited bike: A Federal Ave man was reunited with his stolen $1,500 red and silver Avenue Broadway bicycle. When the man reported the bike had been stolen from his yard, he provided the responding officer with pictures of his missing ride. The officer recognized the bike. It has been turned in and was being held in the precinct's collection of found and stolen property.
Angry bike thief: An officer spotted a man struggling with a locked bicycle on E. Pike near 10th Ave E around 2 AM in the morning last Thursday. The officer's report said the man was 'forcefully' trying to pull the bike from its security chain. The man claimed he was angry at the bike. He was arrested for attempted theft.
ATM ripoff: A Kirkland man got ripped of to the tune of more than $700 after accidentally leaving behind his bank card in an ATM at 14th and Pike. Somebody took the card and racked up the charges at 23 different locations, the police report said.
In June, we got our first look at 2009 crime statistics for Capitol Hill and what we saw wasn't great news -- the Hill's crime totals for the first four months of the year, according to the Seattle Police Department data, were outpacing the rest of the East Precinct and the city.
May's SPD data has been dumped and, hey, good news -- Capitol Hill's growing crime trend has slowed.
To the right are May's totals. We're still seeing a lot of theft but the increase compared to 2008 has slowed. There was also a serious crime in one of the beats that patrols Capitol Hill -- we're checking with SPD about the rape that happened in Beat C2 sometime in May.
Here's a look at the trends by Capitol Hill's East Precinct beats. You can see that sectors E1 -- Broadway and I-5 Shores -- and E2 -- Pike/Pine and sections of First Hill and the CD -- have fallen back to totals closer to their 2008 trends.
In the table below, you can see the updated percent change for the year's Capitol Hill totals compared to 2008 for the same period. Theft is the big driver in all of these numbers -- up a whopping 43% compared to last year with Broadway and I-5 Shores leading the thievery pack.
This second table shows the comparison to 2008 in terms of total number of crimes, not percent change like above. 221 more rip-offs so far in 2009. If you are curious to know what shape these crimes take, we broke down a sample of thefts earlier this week. Here's what SPD has to say about the data and citywide trends on their Crime Statistics page:
SNAPSHOT ANALYSIS: Major Crimes are up through the first five months of 2009 by 8% overall, when compared to the same time period in 2008. Increases have occurred in all crime categories except homicide, rape and vehicle theft. The increases in robbery, burglary and larceny continue a trend seen in the latter half of 2008. The increase in aggravated assaults reverses a downward trend from the last two years. The table below depicts reported Major Crimes by month in 2009 and compares the year-to-date totals with the same period in 2008.
ADDRESSING CRIME TRENDS: The Department will be assisted in its efforts to address these crime trends by the new officers that have been added to the force already and are now completing their training. By the beginning of summer 2009, an additional 45-50 officers will be deployed. In addition, the Department will be hiring 80 more officers during 2009.
Other steps being taken by the Department include adopting a task force approach to targeted crimes and crime areas and active participation in the Seattle Youth Violent Prevention Initiative taking place in the Central Area, Southeast and Southwest Seattle. More specific response efforts are profiled on the precinct level pages.
A 22-year-old man was arrested when he left his gun behind after a visit to the restroom at the newly opened Lookout on Bellevue Ave, according to a Seattle Police Department report.
Witnesses in the report said they believe the man and his accomplice were casing the bar for a possible robbery when they entered the Lookout around 4:40 PM on July 1. Witnesses said one man looked around the bar nervously as the other asked to use the restroom. A bar employee asked the waiting man for his ID. He said he didn't have one and was asked to leave. When the other man returned from the bathroom, both men left the bar.
But one had left something important behind.
According to the report, the Lookout employee entered the restroom and found what appeared to be an old, rusted .380 semiautomatic pistol on the bathroom counter just to the left of the sink. The employee removed the weapon and called 911.
Meanwhile, the two men had returned to the Lookout. The first man asked about the bar menu and then re-entered the restroom....
First week of July's police reports are in at East Precinct. Here's a look at what we found. Before jumping into the incident reports of interest, a quick note on some stats we wrote about earlier on the site. A growing crime problem on the Hill is theft -- about 52% more incidents in the first months of 2009 vs. 2008. To get a flavor of what 'theft' means, in the Capitol Hill area reports we just reviewed, there are 13 theft reports. Of those, 6 of them were car prowls, 4 involved theft from an ATM using somebody's left-behind debit card and 4 were miscellaneous thefts from businesses including this first incident report:
There's an ongoing problem at the local Gold's Gym. For the past several weeks, we've seen reports of theft from locked lockers at the facility. Two more in this week's batch, reported on June 28th and June 30th, according to SPD. Bad guy or guys got $200 from the two thefts.
A 37-year-old man awoke to find two burlgars ransacking his E. Lynn apartment on July 1. They left with his wallet...
Confirmation from Seattle Police Department spokesperson Renee Witt this morning that last night's standoff was the result of good acting:
Witness reported that he had seen a man and a woman pointing guns at each other inside an apartment. Officers responded and determined that the subjects were in unit ---. Patrol officers formed a team and positioned themselves so that they could observe the apartment. People could be heard arguing inside, and at one point someone said, "ow, jeez, stop it." and "go ahead and shoot me." Once the apartment was contained, ACT officers took over the tactical aspect, and established voice contact with the occupants. Three people came out of the apartment and were taken into custody. Officers swept the apartment and found a fourth person inside the bedroom, on a bed. She was taken into custody without incident. Investigation revealed that the four subjects were filming themselves as part of a school project. Three guns...
UPDATE 9:47 PM: Actors! From an eyewitness inside the Carroll Kensington Apartments: "the people upstairs were rehearsing for a play w/ fake guns. Got the swat team called on them. Just about every cop in Seattle"
In late May, police officers swarmed Broadway and briefly detained a man dressed in paramilitary gear for a zombie costume contest.
UPDATE 12:45 AM: A report of the incident from SPD has been posted here I've reviewed the scanner archive to try to learn more about what happened. A 911 call came in at 8:31 PM reporting that an unknown man had told the caller someone may be getting robbed at gunpoint. Officers arrived and walked with the caller to the brick Carroll Kensington apartment building where he said he believed the robbery occurred.
Officers observed people looking down from an upper floor window of the building and then shutting the blinds.
Around 8:42 PM an officer reported descriptions of two suspects in the building -- a white male and woman in their 20s, both with unknown handguns....
A woman sustained cuts to her wrist when she was robbed at knifepoint in the city's Capitol Hill neighborhood early Wednesday morning.
Police said a 20-year-old woman was robbed at 10th Avenue East and East Highland Drive just after 2 a.m.
UPDATE 8:07 AM: CHS found this eyewitness account posted to Facebook:
... after getting halfway down the stairs, then running back inside for my cell phone, I made it outside and saw a woman bent over at the corner, holding her arm out and crying. I ran down the block and got there just as a few other guys came up. One dude had almost witnessed the attack and had ran inside to grab something to put over the gash in the woman's wrist. He ended up grabbing a grey pair of underwear. At least they came from a freshly laundered pile of clothes. I used it to hold the bloody cell phone she handed me, so I could call her friends. One after another, her friends weren't there.
She wasn't going to die from that cut, but there was blood spattered all over, a knife laying a few feet away and the cut wasn't helping her keep her composure any. Overall I think she was handling herself pretty damn well.
The police pulled up almost right after I got there. Nice dude. Calm. Not the hyped up, yelling type.
Poor girl had almost made it home when the guy following her had attacked. She held onto her purse as long as possible, because it had her green card and other necessary documents. She was from Britain and was supposed to fly back on Monday for a wedding.
UPDATE 8:17 AM: Here's the report from the Seattle Police Department. We'll talk with them to see if we can get any more information and updates later this morning.
On 7/8/09, at approximately 2:18 a.m., an officer was driving northbound on 10 Av E., when he was flagged down by the victim. The victim was screaming and pointing at the suspect who was running east on E. Highland Dr. The officer followed the suspect and engaged in a foot pursuit. According to the victim, the suspect confronted her and demanded her property at 10 Av E. and E. Hightland Dr. The suspect pulled a knife and cut the victim’s purse straps. A struggle ensued and the victim fell to the ground at which point the suspect cut her once on the wrist. When the suspect saw the police car, he fled on foot. A K-9 unit attempted a track but did not locate the suspect. All of the victim’s property was located and returned to her. The victim sustained a minor cut to her right wrist and slight bruising to her head. She was treated on scene by Seattle Fire Personnel and transported to an area hospital as a precaution. The suspect is described as a black male, 6′ tall, short hair, wearing a white T-shirt and dark pants.
Two accounts on CHS of a police chase near 10th Ave early this morning.
My neighbor was awaked by helicopters overhead for 1/2 hour, police cruising down our street (10th Ave E, near Brix) multiple times (no siren), and she's sure she saw a cop with a police dog walk down the street. She was scared and called the police, they would only tell her that they were chasing a robber. Anyone else have any info?
Hia, So I woke up at 3am this morning(July 8th) to some helicopter/large planes practically dive bombing my apartment for like 20 minutes. It got to the point where I thought they might be trying to land on Broadway or Volunteer park.... I'm on Broadway & Aloha. I looked on the news and couldn't find any escaped convicts/ crazy traffic reports or similar explanations for the wierdness.
Does anyone know what the deal was? Or did they hear it too?
