When: Thursday, February 2, 2012 06:00 PM - 08:00 PM
Where: Vino Verite 208 Boylston Ave E (at Olive Way)
What: This Thursday we will be featuring the amazing results of winemaker, father, writer, and “vinarchist” Randall Grahm, founder of the groundbreaking, willing-to-be-extraterrestrial winery Bonny Doon Vineyards.

On the heels of two book signing and wine tasting events in Capitol Hill itself (one at Volunteer Park Café and one at Oddfellows), we also wanted to show Bonny Doon’s distinct and brave efforts in wine. Randall does things his way, and in the face of gigantic, mega-corporate wineries in California, and the onset of giant warehouse liquor/wine stores (yes, they’re coming here too, Seattle), he makes wine with the right things in mind: dirt, grapes, and the weather.

Randall can boast some interesting things, such as being one of the only living winemakers to have an asteroid named after him: JPL Small Object database item #4934, “Rhoneranger.” It has an orbital period of 5.2 years. Randall also has downsized his winery’s production to focus on quality. This is directly in the face of recent trends in California (and soon to be Washington as well), where new laws reward volume production in market placement and pricing.

If you’re up for participating in this “slow wine” revolution, head to Randall’s book singing and tasting at Oddfellows from 3-6pm, and then come on over to our place for a different lineup of Bonny Doon’s bounty.

Since Randall will be so close by Thursday afternoon, we are hoping he will stop by the shop at some point. Keep an eye on Vino Verite’s Twitter feed or Vinum Wine’s twitter account for updates.

2008 Bonny Doon Muscat "Ca del Solo”
Like the attractive person across the room who winks at you at a party, you’ll find yourself unable to look away. Muscat is often made into dessert wine, but with different attention can become much more dimensional. Like a study in contrasts, this is both delicate and intense, with beautiful flowered scents and a rush of lemon, peach, and mango that are invigorating and satisfying. Resplendent.

2008 Bonny Doon Albarino "Ca del Solo"
We love us a good Albarino, a grape grown mainly in Spain’s Galician region, but likely brought from Germany by monks. Therefore, you could say Albarino likes a good journey, and it sends the taster on one too: Bonny Doon’s version is ever-so-true to the nature of the grape, showing bright, lively tropical notes and a wealth of tangy, edgy citrus flavors that mellow against smooth honeydew. Intriguingly crisp and almost sparkles on the finish. Stop it. Stop it some more.

2009 Bonny Doon Contra
In the spirit of adventure, we wanted to have one wine in the lineup that is new to us too. Sourced from fruit grown in Contra Costa county, the wine, according to Bonny Doon’s website is “a contrarian blend of mostly old-fangled grape varieties.” We like the sound of that. We’re game.

2010 Bonny Doon Clos de Gilroy
An absolute kick of a Grenache, this wine pretty much does all but leave a carving in the tasting bar that “Gilroy was here.” Bold from the get go, it shows snappy cherry and raspberry notes loaded with spice and earth, leading to an intricate mineral-styled finish. Classically Bonny Doon.

2008 Bonny Doon Syrah "Le Pousseur"
Enough of the tasting descriptions. This Syrah makes me think of lines from the poem “Snails” by Philip Levine: “I was about to say something final, that would capture the meaning of autumn’s arrival, something suitable for bronzing, something immediately recognizable as so large a truth it’s totally untrue.” Sip and you will understand.

2007 Bonny Doon Le Cigare Volant
We love the rock in this wine. That’s right, the rock. Sure, there’s beautiful, dark fruit up front, offering earthy tannins and peppery notes too. But then there’s a fascinating, earth-bound flavor of crushed rock. The final note has a precise clip like the finishing pose of a Flamenco dancer. There’s nothing quite like it.
