What started with a realization that her kids might not be allowed to attend the school just blocks from their home has lead Eastlake resident and activist Michelle Buetow to a run for the Seattle School Board.
Buetow recently formally delcared as a candidate for board position 3, currently held by Harium Martin-Morris. Martin-Morris is seeking re-election to the position.
Here is a look back at Tuesday's high-school baseball action.
Redmond 12, Eastlake 1 (six innings)
-- After dropping a pair to Southridge (Kennewick), Redmond got back on track in a big way. Zach Abbruzza was 4 for 4 with two triples and seven RBI. You can see him drive in a pair in the video below.
Jake Levin was 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles and three runs scored. Dylan Davis struck out four and gave up one hit over four innings, making it tough for the Wolves to score, despite walking seven.

I drove out to Eastlake on Tuesday to get a first look at Redmond's baseball program. After the Mustangs' 12-1 win in six innings, I talked to Dylan Davis (Oregon State), Zach Abbruzza (Gonzaga) and Michael Conforto (Oregon State) about their season so far.
Here are video interviews with all three standouts.

My quick trip down Eastlake's streets this morning found Eastlake Avenue bare and wet. There isn't much traffic and what traffic there is was moving along with no problems.
Side streets can be slick, particularly if they aren't well traveled. Be careful on hills. Temperatures aren't expected to rise above freezing today so side streets may not clear off today.

I mentioned last Monday that there could be some major movement in the girls basketball rankings this week, and I was right. At least when it comes to 4A.
Four of top-seven teams tumbled, including No. 1 Federal Way. The Eagles lost the SPSL 4A title game to Auburn Riverside on Friday. They were without their top player, Talia Walton, who suffered a knee injury during practice two days earlier. They were clearly out of sorts early, which had a lot to do with Auburn Riverside.
The good news for Federal
It must be spring, or close to it, because work parties are beginning at the Eastlake P-Patch. I walk by the P-Patch most days and it's always exciting when the garden begins to awaken from it's winter slumber.
Rebecca Partington says that, unlike in previous years, they'll have work parties on Wednesdays and Saturdays but not Sundays. The times will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Are you getting the playoff itch? I am. I can't wait to see how the the state girls basketball picture starts to come into focus in both 4A and 3A.
Do I absolutely believe Federal Way and Holy Names will finish on top? There are few sure bets in high-school sports, so of course not. But I like their chances.
Federal Way took a blow last week when 5-foot-10 senior Ty Burgess left the team for undisclosed reasons. She was the team's second leading scorer (13.8) behind UW-bound Talia Walton (17.0). But
TOPS@Seward School K-8 will be having an open house for families of prospective students from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
Janis White, president of the TOPS Site Council, says that they "encourage prospective Eastlake families to come to see if they think the alternative program at TOPS is the right fit for their families."
We first wrote about Little Water Cantina in June when the new Eastlake restaurant applied for a liquor license.
Now, the new restaurant at 2865 Eastlake Ave. E. reports on its Facebook page that it expects to be open in April:
After years of discussion and debate, the Seattle School Board passed its new school assignment plan Wednesday evening. The plan includes a geographic zone for TOPS@Seward School in Eastlake that will allow more neighborhood kids to attend the school.
The Eastlake Community Council is sponsoring a public meeting on Tuesday (Jan. 18) with two topics:
Roanoke Street End Park: The park is looking a little haggard. Possibilities include new plantings, a redesign and maybe a historical marker to note that Boeing's first plane was assembled at this site in 1916. Trees in the park (three willows and a poplar) were added to the city's Heritage Tree registry last spring. Want to get help? Email teamenzo@gmail.com or call 206-898-6147.
North Gateway Triangle: This is the area under I-5 where Eastlake and Harvard meet. Chris Leman notes in an e-mail that this piece of land was identified as a priority in the 1998 Eastlake Neighborhood Plan. Possible additions to the park include a piece of art or decorating the I-5 columns. The Seattle Parks Department has also suggested a skateboard park at the site. E-mail info@eastlakeseattle.org or 206-322-5463 to take part in the planning.
Both topics will be on Tuesday's agenda. The meeting is at TOPS@Seward School, 2500 Franklin...
Traffic around TOPS@Seward School appeared to be busier than usual this morning as parents who live outside the school's transportation zone drove their children to school to protest potential bus cuts.
At one point, northbound traffic on Boylston was backed up from Louisa to Lynn as buses and parents tried to make a left onto Louisa to drop off children. Annoyed drivers on Boylston could be heard honking their horns and at least one bus driver yelled at a driver he felt was holding up entrance to Louisa, which is the bus drop-off zone.
Parents of students who are slated to lose their bus service to Eastlake's TOPS@Seward School in the fall of 2012 are being asked to drive their children to school on Friday to simulate possible traffic impacts if their service is cut.
The drive-to-school event would only be for the morning commute. Parents say arrivals would be between 7:45 and 8:30 a.m. Sheila Anderson, a TOPS parent, said in an e-mail that:
UPDATE: This post has been changed since it was first published. Information on repairs has been added.
2:07 p.m.: Andy Ryan, public information officer for Seattle Public Utilities, says crews are at work fixing this break:
Seattle Public Utility (SPU) crews have been working since 10 o’clock last night on the repair, which is expected to be completed within the next few hours. The crews are installing 16 feet of new 12-inch pipe. About 25 homes have experienced low pressure or been without water, and 3 fire hydrants are affected. There have been limited traffic impacts. As is our standard practice, SPU crews are keeping people away from the work site for safety reasons.
Eastlake resident Phil Weiss has photos on Flickr of the break. | Update by cdmilton.
ORIGINAL POST:
Sometime before 10pm on Wednesday, January 5th a water pipe exploded on Fairview Ave E between Newton and Boston, in front of the dock located at 2019 Fairview Ave E. The break caused considerable damage to the street, as well as massive flooding. The city sent emergency construction crews to repair the broken pipe.
I checked in with Issquah girls basketball coach Kathy Gibson after noticing that Maddey Pflaumer had not played in the Eagles' final game of the Nike Tournament of Champions over the holidays.
Gibson said Pflaumer had suffered a groin injury in the second quarter of the previous tournament game, leaving with a season-low two points. But the coach said Pflaumer is expected to play tonight (Wednesday) as the fourth-ranked Eagles take on Garfield in a KingCo 4A contest at 7:30 p.m. at Issaquah.

UPDATE: This post has been updated since first published. Details from the Seattle Fire Department have been added.
The Seattle Fire Department was out in force just before 2 a.m. Tuesday morning for an apartment fire in the 2200 block of Minor Avenue E., which a Seattle Fire Department spokesperson says started in a couch that was too close to a baseboard heater. They estimate the damage to the apartment at $60,000.
Our sister news site, Capitol Hill Seattle, says that the apartment belonged to Cupcake Royale's Capitol Hill store manager Jaime, and her daughter, Hanna. They weren't at home when the fire broke out and they are OK. Their dog, Pearl, is also OK. An e-mail from Jody Hall at Cupcake Royale says the family "pretty much lost everything."
Staff at Cupcake Royale are collecting money to help Jaime and Hanna get back on their feet. The collection point is the Capitol Hill Cupcake Royale at 1111 E. Pike.
The SFD spokesperson says the first units to respond found that a neighbor was already on the scene with a hose trying to put out the flames. They checked the neighbor for any smoke inhalation but the person was fine.
The large response to the fire is standard practice for an apartment fire, the SFD spokesperson said, because of the potential for rescues.

Eastlake has two public events this week, both courtesy of the Eastlake Community Council:
How Can Eastlake's Bus Service Be Improved?: Tuesday, Dec. 7, 7-9 p.m. at TOPS@Seward School, 2500 Franklin Ave. E.
Representatives from Metro and the Seattle Department of Transportation will be on hand to talk with neighborhood residents about bus service and what the options might be for improving it.
Metro recently eliminated some bus stops on Eastlake Avenue E. and Harvard E. During the three-year construction project on Mercer, Metro will be using diesels on Eastlake's Route 70 instead of cleaner hybrid buses. And everyone would like the express routes to make more stops here.
Chris Leman, president of the Eastlake Community Council, contends in an e-mail that "our neighborhood now has probably the worst (transit service) in its 117 year history." Leman continues:
"Most of the buses that use Eastlake Avenue never make a stop on Eastlake Avenue, treating our neighborhood as only a corridor for zipping passengers...

The TOPS@Seward School Site Council, a group of parents and educators of students who attend the Eastlake school, has voted to endorse a proposed geographic zone for the school that would include Eastlake and the Roanoke Park area.
The Site Council did not endorse, nor did it reject, a school district proposal to include an area west of 10th Avenue E. in the geographic zone. Janis White, president of the Site Council, reported the vote in an e-mail on Wednesday.
Thanks to pediatrician Dr. James Metz from Seattle Children's Hospital for putting together a great night of information and fun at the TOPS at Seward School last night. Specialists in the area of dentistry, chiropractic, acupucture, nutrition, maternity, and bicycle safety were on hand to educate attendees and hand out free goodies.
The city council’s Committee on the Built Environment adopted new regulations governing land use in low-rise multifamily zones this morning that will allow row houses in lowrise multifamily zones (about three stories) and eliminate minimum parking requirements in those zones. The changes are an effort to prevent the kind of ugly, auto-oriented “six-pack” townhouses that dominated Seattle multifamily development through much of the 2000s.

This guest post was written by Bike Club Rescue Squad founders Keith Hoeller, Kelli Currie, and Renée Barton. Avid cyclists and members of the Cascade Bicycle Club, they have participated in many Cascade activities, including the Seattle to Portland ride.
There is a decidedly uncivil war between drivers and cyclists raging on the streets of Seattle, and it should come as no surprise that the drivers appear to be winning.
Every year, drivers kill an average of two cyclists, and many, many more

CapitolHillSeattle.com reports that these financial fraud cases appear to be the result of a "flash attack," where someone tampers with credit card point-of-sale equipment at a business and then harvests card data. That data is then used to make fradulent purchases.
