On 11/22/09, at approximately 1:50 a.m., officers responded to a call of men with guns outside a motel in the 2200 block of Aurora Ave N. These males had reportedly assaulted one person and were trying to gain entry to the caller’s room.
When officers arrived, there were no signs of the males, and the caller led officers to the victim. The victim reported that he had been in his room with the caller and his girlfriend and had walked outside to have a smoke. As he walked down the stairs, he heard someone say, “There’s one of them” and was then confronted by at least two males, one of whom had a handgun.
He was grabbed by the male with the gun, and was struck several times with the weapon. He believes that he was also pepper sprayed. The victim was then robbed of his personally owned gun (he has a CCW), 2 Magazines, his wallet, cell phone & keys. A purported member of the hardcore band Furious Styles -- whose singer, Michael Torres ignited controversy earlier this week, creating a shirt honoring Christopher Monfort, who is charged in the slaying of police officer Timothy Brenton -- waded into the comments thread of a Seattle Weekly blog post to express surprise and dismay at the amount of negative attention the band has received for said shirt.
The story was first broken here on SeattleCrime.com here, here, and here, in what we've deemed
Today is somewhat of a break. Some sun, some clouds, a few light showers. Good enough to rake some leaves, as I will do soon.
Tonight it will get much more interesting...and Jim Forman from KING TV should be gassing up his van for a trip back north! (By the way, I have been encouraging KING TV to create a DVD with a collection of his weather segments--it would be a hot seller!) A low
Police set up containment in Wallingford a short time ago near Stone Way N and N 47th Street looking for a robbery suspect. Officers are looking for an older white male in a plaid shirt. He may have implied he had a weapon.
No reports of any injuries.
As I mentioned in this post yesterday, and again following last night's shooting/possible robbery on Capitol Hill, Seattle Police Department crime data shows robberies in Seattle are up 19% in Seattle.

Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) crews will continue restoration work in Westlake Square on Saturday and Sunday, November 21 and 22, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. They are removing walking barriers and non-functional items from the small park to improve pedestrian safety and transit access.
During the work, the left lane of Sixth Avenue at Westlake will be blocked off to accommodate trucks required for the work. Weather permitting, the work will be completed by Tuesday afternoon, November 24. Two Seattle Police Officers will be on site to assist pedestrians during the construction.
Part of the Westlake Hub Strategy, the interim changes are the first step in a series of enhancements proposed around the hub of transit services at Westlake Avenue.
The owner of Pazzo's Pizzeria, David Mendoza, has been slapped with more than a decade in prison time for smuggling pot into the US, reports Seattle Weekly's Vernal Coleman:
Mendoza's long trip through the federal judicial system finally came to a close yesterday after a federal judge sentenced him to 14 years in prison for his role in a prolific marijuana smuggling operation.
The real bad news:
But along with his sentencing comes some worrisome news for Pazzo's fans: The pizzeria, in addition to all

A King County Superior Court judge today ruled in favor of the City of Seattle and One Reel in a lawsuit, which claimed a State Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) assessment, was required prior to Fourth of July fireworks displays at Gas Works Park.
“Fourth of July Fireworks at Gas Works Park is a beloved tradition in Seattle, and one that many families look forward to every year,” said Seattle Parks and Recreation Superintendent Timothy Gallagher. “One Reel has been an excellent partner in a providing free holiday event that is open to the general public for many years. They can now begin preparations for the 2010 event, and continue their search for a sponsor.”
The judgment finds that there is no “genuine issue” in the lawsuit. It asserts that the Fourth of July Fireworks organized by non-profit One Reel falls under the SEPA exemption for public celebrations.

Yesterday we spoke to Sen. Adam Kline, D-Seattle, about how the slaying of Officer Timothy Brenton has sparked a push to get an assault weapons ban passed by the Legislature this year. But we also talked to Kline, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, about a number of other, er, "progressive" criminal justice measures that he will work on when lawmakers convene this coming January. Among those is a bill that would tinker with the state's Three Strikes And Your Out law.

Where does David Beckham, in town to play in Sunday's MLS Cup, ranks on the list of world celebrities? Top 20, at least, right? Maybe top 10? I mean, I'm talking about people who are household names all over the world, not just on one continent. It's not a big list. (Off the top of my head: Barack Obama, Nelson Mandela, Madonna, Michael Jordan, Bono). But Beckham's definitely on it. And he's here, in our crappy little port! There is a good summary article in the Real Change News this week about the Seattle Housing Authority Yesler Terrace redevelopment project. This is a project that is not in the 12th Avenue Urban Village, but is directly adjacent and will most certainly impact the community. As the article discusses, at its full build-out the project could add up to 5,000 units of housing and millions of square feet of office and retail. The picture of the redevelopment model above is from a community meeting, care of The Stranger newspaper.

Well, this arrived just in time to make me feel bad about consuming that enormous bag of popcorn at "New Moon" the other night. (Hey, it was my dinner.) But seriously, was anyone out there thinking that movie popcorn was nutritious? I eat it all the time, under no illusions -- though I do pretend that not adding the scary "buttery" topping makes it, if not good, at least not as bad as it might be. And I'm wondering when the nutritionist quoted in the story last went to a movie theater, if she thinks
The Seattle City Council just sent out a press release yesterday afternoon officially announcing committee assignments for next year, and the mainstream press has dutifullypicked up the story.

Beginning Dec. 4, 2009, backyard cottages will be allowed citywide. Since 2006 backyard cottages, also known as detached accessory dwelling units or DADUs, have been permitted in southeast Seattle. There has been a tremendous amount of interest in backyard cottages for many reasons. For seniors, a backyard cottage offers a way to downsize while living next to their families and staying in their neighborhood. Others want flexibility for their extended families or friends, a place for their children, or an opportunity to invest in their property while providing affordable housing for singles and couples.
CAMs that will be updated by Dec. 4 as a result of the ordinance include:
- CAM 116a, Establishing an Accessory Dwelling Unit
- CAM116b, Establishing a Backyard Cottage
- CAM 117, Parking Waivers for Accessory Dwelling Units
- CAM 603, A Citizen’s Guide to Housing and Zoning Compliance
- CAM 604, Seattle Laws on Property Owner and Tenant Rights and Responsibilities
- CAM 606, Illegal...

Yesterday East Precinct Captain James Dermody sent out the following note to thank the East Precinct community for their support after the murder of Officer Tim Brenton:
On Halloween night and in the days that have followed, you have shown your support of the Seattle Police Department, in particular the men and women of the East Precinct, in countless ways.
You visited the vigil site on 29th Avenue, called and sent letters of sympathy and encouragement to the precinct, delivered food, coffee and flowers, offered space for gatherings, followed the media coverage of the investigation, phoned in numerous tips, watched or attended the Space Needle flag raising, procession and memorial service and breathed a collective sign of relief after the arrest in Tukwila.
As Chief Diaz mentioned several times following Halloween weekend, our Officers continued to provide quality public safety services during very difficult times. They were bolstered by all of your actions, thoughts, and kind words.

Grohl and Vultures perform at 8 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 21) at the Paramount Theatre. Tickets: $41.50; call 877-784-4849 or go to STGPresents.
