23rd, always shafted
I tried to take the survey, but I had to check out the overview first. It disgusts me that the neighborhood plan is so restrictive in area. There's a sign at the intersection of 23rd and Aloha that says "Welcome to Capitol Hill," but according to their map, a whole bunch of residents, students, and businesspeople live and work in some kind of uninteresting hinterland.

A Starbucks by any other name?
I doubt that the reincarnation is still a corporate-sponsored SBUX but with a different name. Branding don't work that way, especially for Starbucks. I'm theorizing that the shop was a franchise location, and that the owner is separating from Starbucks but continuing to do coffee.

All that aside, being so very obvious in spying on Victrola is in poor taste.

Also it's in the basement of an auto repair shop, so maybe upstairs is where the dogs are moving into.

Look at the 4-way stop, too
I'd urge SDOT to look at the intersection at the base of that street, where Boyer crosses through. It's the stupidest intersection I've ever seen--a stopsign-controlled four-way stop with a giant traffic circle obstructing views. It's impossible to follow normal four-way stop procedures because you can't SEE anyone else, plus you don't know who's going where when they have to veer around the traffic circle. It's unsafe and illogical. The whole neighborhood needs an upgrade.

Poor, poor ignored James
You're still disregarding the James St. exit. Any particular reason?

James is a tougher street to travel because of its steepness and uneven pavement, but it's always been an option. Turn east onto it and go a few blocks, then left onto Broadway, then continue wherever. I usually turn right again onto Madison.

Seriously doubtful.
The bullet may be able to travel that far, but do you really think it still has the force required to break a window and pass through to land inside a room? I'd also like to know at what angle the bullet hit the glass, because a bullet falling from an angle that steep (the parabolic curve created by a 45-degree shot) would more likely graze than penetrate. Not to mention all the trees, roofs & gutters, etc. that could otherwise be in its way.

Making the freeway through the state's biggest city safer and more driveable? Who would do such a thing?
Thank you, god. The troughs caused by studded tires and the buckling segments of concrete past Northgate have been problems for a decade at least. I'd love to know how many accidents have happened from standing water in the ruts and someone losing control when going over a massive pothole. I'll put up with the noise and inconvenience for actually maintaining the county infrastructure. Suck it up, whiners.

"People complained that Metro wasn't communicating enough, but I thought this page did it pretty well."

I dunno. I've been out of town for a week, but I was in town on the 18th and 19th. On both of those days I was lucky enough to be able to work from home, but I had to cancel appointments because of inaccurate bus reporting. On Thursday #10 was non-functioning for over an hour because a bunch of them piled up at the north end of the route, but Metro said it was running. Then, the next day, Metro said the #43 was on its snow route, but I watched it run by my window on 23rd (regular route) all day long. The problem with the 10 I could understand, but watching the 43 blissfully operate as normal when the website said otherwise was really annoying.

They really, really need to do something about Aloha. I walked to Volunteer on Sunday morning and the hill (you know what I'm talking about) was good for watching idiots without chains spin out. Why? WHYYYY?

Look at the east-west arterials, though. Why is John/Thomas between 15th and 23rd not a priority road? Union? If Cherry is our only hope then I'll stay home. I saw local news footage of Cherry that was an insane mess. Cherry's stupid.

The 43 & 48 buses were running this morning without a blink of an eye.

RE: Free Speech for Bigots? Hell No!
The whole reason bullying has become a rampant problem is because speech IS protected; almost all of it. It's only when it crosses certain lines (hate speech) that the right is lost. For instance, people won't do anything about a bully until he/she physically attacks someone.

In the same way, the physical attack of using pepper spray was out of line.

I'm strictly speaking of the legality of using physical contact to protest what someone is saying, not whether it was "fair" or "serves the cause."

My take on the pie
I loved the pizzas I got, and I would definitely reorder. I guess starting my experience with ordering online set me up for success, but it didn't hurt that the guy who helped me when I came for pick-up was outstandingly gorgeous, and the place had a uniquely modern, clean interior for a pizza place. I contrast this to Piecora's, Mad Pizza, and all the other old stand-bys that are dingy and loud with a jukebox and smell of old grease. Keep on rocking it, 'Zaw.

RE: a slice perhaps?
My pizza fell through the grate, too. Then my friend helped me slide it to the right (back onto a grating rail) and then out (onto the cardboard), and all was saved. So I don't think the flaw is in the pizza being too thin, but in the cooker not being ingenious enough to save food from a simple mistake in oven-loading judgment.

That darn 43
43's reroute wasn't minor: Broadway to Madison, and that's it. Last stop was scheduled to be 3rd, with a turnaround on 1st (and going back up Madison). I was under the impression from Metro customer service that the 43 would go north on 3rd, so pretty much everyone had an unexpected hike today.

In related news, drivers who don't know how to use the microphone on an articulated bus when announcing route changes are very likely morons.

I am serious
1) You guys need a "reply" button one more than just the first level of comments. Thread me!
2) I am being serious. CHCC can advertise at their office, in local community colleges, neighborhood papers, etc. They can contact instructors and community organizers and bloggers. They can post online in message boards and LiveJournal communities. They can advertise in Craigslist. They should be asking, "We're looking for a graphic designer. We can't pay much and may even need this to be pro bono. Know anybody?" It sucks when you don't have money, but guess what: you don't get services for free. That's it. You wouldn't ask a car mechanic to enter a contest to fix your car, and the best job wins $100. IT IS THE EXACT SAME THING. The difference between the ads that get responded to and the ads that get ignored is what is being offered, and speculation work is ignored. The people who don't ignore it are devaluing themselves, or are talentless hacks.

Sorry J
J, yes, those suggestions you made are the way it's done. It's how I got my unpaid internship, and how I worked for a few months for pittance. It's not a dog and pony show; while the work may be cheap, at least it's HONEST, and the person working knows they are being valued. I understand that you disagree with minor points in the essay, but if you knew how relentlessly the graphics industry is being devalued, you would understand the firm stance on this. Designers shouldn't waver, which is why I look at this and will not consider it. (Even though I have always hated CHCC's old logo and would gladly redesign it for them. But not for a contest.)

What a crock
I totally forgot what date this was going to happen, so leaving Volunteer Park I had to keep driving around roadblocks to get to the other side of the hill. I was going to embrace this whole thing but yeah, it was executed so badly it was a joke and nothing more than an annoyance. It wouldn't have been so bad if they had JUST blocked off 14th, but they also blocked off a second parallel street, and there was no indication of where one could drive to get around. I couldn't tell how far south the closures went, either. A map? Detour signs? Signs clearly posted stating what was happening and how the community could deal with it or embrace it? Forget it.

Sidenote: I don't think everyone was towed, because my friend lives on 13th and mentioned having to move her car.

I don't see why people couldn't just LEAVE their parked cars where they were, and the organizers simply close the street to driving. Who gives a shit if people are parked there? They're always parked there!
