Oh good idea! There was a cool article in today's Times arguing that UConn's dominance is actually good for women's basketball, like UCLA was for men's... http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/16/sports/ncaabasketball/16lo |

You make it sound like the Jayhawks aren't the best team every year--I don't understand ;) Not from there, but went to school at KU... they sure feel like mine... For what it's worth, I would love to see Texas take Kentucky out. |

Nice. Let's go another round! Have at it: Last month I took the Amtrak train to Portland; I'm taking a trip on an airplane soon. One time, I travelled from Minnesota to Ontario, Canada by canoe. |

I disagree, cheesecake. Look how much the New York Public Library has available ebook-wise: http://ebooks.nypl.org/D4A52209-C8EB-4E9A-9C28-799E428A92E1/ Can't wait for Seattle to get on this! |

I will really miss this place! And I can't imagine anything taking its place that would be as cool... Is it just me, though, or is the Publicola story a little weird? Their finances are better this year than last year, so they're closing? What? I don't want to say that small businesses should be willing to lose money in the short term in order to promote healthy neighborhoods, but I guess I kind of think that small businesses should be willing to lose money in the short term in order to promote healthy neighborhoods. But that's really a side issue, as is how many lines I've filled on my Bailey/Coy card. At this point I'm just sorry to see them go. We'll miss you! |

I admit I rarely shopped here, and that QFC's just about as easy and seemed to carry more of what was here, but I'll miss having a store like this on north Broadway. Don't get me wrong: I like fancy coffee shops and good restaurants (oh so many restaurants!), but there's something nice about old-fashioned stores that just sell stuff... What? They sold pizza? Well, sure, but you know what I mean, right? |

Ah, right, the contact info. howellcollective@gmail.com They ask that you send "name, address, and a statement describing your support (donate: time in the form of labor or admin., tools, plants, fiscal sponsorship, etc)." Just to be clear: since I'm not sure that I understand all of this, this post isn't an endorsement, though I agree that it certainly sounds like a good idea. |

4 stars in my book

It's quiet on the 10th Ave side, and the hardwood floors are well-kept, and some units have cute glass cabinets (see below). Plus, as jonglix rightly said, it's insanely convenient--within one block you have a bookstore, a liquor store, a bus stop, a grocery store, three coffee shops, two gyro places, pho, and pizza. Within one block! Photos: ![]()

Thanks for the video. My only quibble is with your claim that it was "one of the best" coffee shops: just take out those first two words and you'll have my full support. It's all for a good cause, but I sure do miss reading and writing at the window seats overlooking the park... |

Love Oddfellows; have been many times and will continue to go. But I'm definitely not going for the food, though I've eaten lots of it and will continue to eat lots of it. It's all pretty much okay (thanks for reminding me that the Stranger sometimes runs excellent reviews, j), but none of it's great. Well, actually, the aioli that came with my fries the other day was great, as was my companions' s'mores dessert. Otherwise it's not great, and I swear I'm not just saying that because I <3 Linda and will side with her over j any day. I also agree, though, that it would be a shame if this change leads to "heads on the wall and stuff." |

I still have mixed feelings about this sort of thing--seems like other places put a lot of work into similar projects that were only marginally successful. On the other hand, anything that gets the awesome guy from Bliss on the news is okay with me. Definitely some good publicity so far. Huzzah, community council! |

on to the sweet 16
After the second round, Pizza Fusion has moved into 1st place on the Times scoreboard. Guess that's what happens when you get 13 out of 16, and pick some good early upsets. (That bracket has the same name as the place where we watched the Huskies lose, but I won't hold that against anyone, I promise.) Crimson&Blue is in 2nd--just ahead of josh, who picked 13 correctly--despite getting only 12 right, thanks to those upset picks. Alternate ranking, less the bonus points: 1. josh (260) 2. Pizza Fusion (255) 3. Crimson&Blue (250) 4. yancy9 (245) 5. christinabollo (230) 6. dschonbe (215) 7. jonglix (215) 8. saranut (210) 9. jseattle (200) Looks like j may have been right about josh having what it takes to survive and advance . . . See you next weekend, CHS-ballers. |

Yes, part of the fun of experimenting with the Times' platform: only after it was going did I discover that they award "bonus points" for upsets. Times rules here. Here's a ranking w/out the bonus points, awarding 5 points per correct 1st round pick: 1. Crimson&Blue (130) 1. josh (130) 2. Pizza Fusion (125) 2. yancy9 (125) 3. christinabollo (120) 4. jseattle (110) 5. dschonbe (105) 6. saranut (100) 7. jonglix (95) |

Interesting idea (and interesting shopping list--who knew there was such a thing as "ultra soy" soy milk?). But if you leave the discounts out, I just don't see this study can be anywhere close to accurate: qfc especially seems to put special "member" prices on everything, and they give away memberships to anyone who even walks by the store . . . |

I can't speak to that, but it was fun to make the CD, and fun to get together with everyone. Great pics, avitania. Sorry we didn't get to talk much, but I'm looking forward to listening to your CD! Figure 8 / Duplex 7. Out There On The Ice / Cut Copy 8. Graveyard Girl / M83 9. The Earthquake of '73 / Fruit Bats 10. Two Weeks / Grizzly Bear 11. Cachito / Juan Garcia Esquivel 12. Time To Get Away / LCD Soundsystem 13. Heretic Pride / The Mountain Goats 14. John Saw That Number / Neko Case 15. Day The Train Jumped The Tracks / Split Lip Rayfield 16. New Madrid / Uncle Tupelo 17. Jockey Full Of Bourbon / Tom Waits 18. The Best Ever Death Metal Band In Denton / The Mountain Goats Not as Hill-centric as final's, but I haven't lived here very long; did see the Mountain Goats at Neumos, so that's something . . . |

Some of you are younger than me! But thanks, j and seandr, for being older! '94: not positive, but I believe I visited Seattle for the first time in '94, and I thought it was *way* cooler than Montana, mostly because here you could buy a shirt that said "ska" on it. :) Linda's--went right after moving here, and knew immediately that Capitol Hill was definitely where I wanted to be. Summer night, patio, Manny's, people who seem cooler than me: perfect. |

When I go the /comments page, I see the old star voting options . . . Otherwise looks good; I like the comments-in-boxes thing. |

RE: sunshine, man!

That's not quite fair. I agree that transit could be improved (yay for Prop 1!), but it's really not that hard to get around. Just the other day I made it all the way to Phinney Ridge in like half an hour, and it only took one bus to get there. Granted, it takes a while to get to Renton, but who wants to go to Renton? |

How about props to the Fish Fry for making those amazing rosemary potatoes? Sure, we had to wait like 90 minutes for ours, but my were they tasty! Sorry we missed you both there, j & cheesecake. Maybe next time. |

Sadly we got there too late & it was standing room only. We're at Moe Bar now, excited for the Fish Fry breakfast. Happy Inauguration! |

I'll second the "nice job." Fun and informative. And controversial; which of course means more fun . . . Look forward to more comments. For what it's worth, I work "off hill" at Seattle U, which is just a few yards off the Hill. |

anyone else?

Presse will have it on, but they don't take reservations, so I'm nervous. Bottleneck has a thing, but it's kind of far. And now the Stranger party and Central Cinema are both sold out :( So how about it, chs, anyone know of another good spot? And how about it, jseattle--maybe this post might head back to the top, now that the Big Day's approaching? |

Thanks, Seadevi. (Five stars? Sure.) Bittman is great. If you (like me) thought ("U District? too far!") last night, you can always listen to his great sit-down with Steve Scher on Weekday. |

Thanks, Brad. That is so close to awesome . . . so close. Without the comments, though (and the ability to comment), it's just not enough. Ideally, the site could have mobile version like other fancy sites like flickr--just in case someone's looking for a project. :) |

does this warrant further discussion?
I'm not sure, but a) iPhone hype? Still? Isn't J's point rather that the iPhone is now just a stand-in for luxe phones? Like Kleenex or whatever? and b) "thoughtless and insensitive"? I wish the survey was thoughtless and insensitive! On the subject of sensitivity, though, what about a sense of humor? But most importantly c) why is no one complaining about the pets question? Smelly, hairy, environmentally unsound: down with cats and dogs both, I say! |

I just work nearby, and subscribe to their email newsletter, which included these details: "DJ Miss Broadway live at 10pm; Midnight Toast; Assorted Fun." And, yes, if you're wondering, I will (hooray!) be back in Seattle in time for New Years . . . |

PEMCO responds
I feel a little funny sharing this, since it almost seems like I'm endorsing this company what I've barley heard of, but I got this comment on my blog today, and thought that if anyone (J?) was still following this story they might like to see it: Baaaa! Hello. Yes, you are right about the goats. My name is Rod Brooks, NW Marketing Guy at PEMCO Insurance. The goats you saw will be "stars" of the small screen (in HD) by spring. As you reported, you found us filming the next in a series of commercials that feature our NW neighbors... including the interesting, quirky, and eco-friendly lives that we live. I can't say more about the goats or the commercials just yet. The snow and ice storm didn't make things any easier for the production grew, but apparently the goats were fine with it. I just wanted to stop by and say thanks for the mention in your blog. It's great to see the comments that the PEMCO campaign continues to create. In this case, even before the commercial is on the air. Not baaaaaad. (Sorry, couldn't resist). Rod Brooks NW Marketing Guy PEMCO Insurance |

<3 Vivace Brix <3
11:20am: 1. Open! Most of north Broadway's open (can't hold us back!), but Brix has the clearest sidewalks by far. 2. 25ish customers; 20ish tables =, um, like 1.25 (same caveats as final, more or less, plus there's the mostly-empty study room here) 3. sweaters, jeans, boots; I have a pretty pink scarf that the barista likes :) 4. I'll say 6 laptops, so = about 1:4 5. hmm . . . nothing's jumping out at me (downside of window seat), though I do see a snowball w/an icicle sticking out of it outside. And did I mention that I have a pretty pink scarf? 6. non-xmas (barista currently singing pink floyd (?)) 7. fun post! thanks, final! |

RE: Local Bus service

I just saw a 48 blow through a red light at Broadway & Harrison. Maybe they don't have stop lights on the normal 48 route? Also spotted at Broadway and Harrison, for reasons I'm sure I'll never understand:

I have tried, and succeeded. Here's how it goes: flip your shovel over and use it to chop up the packed snow/ice, then flip it again and shovel away! |

RE: goats

Yeah, someone involved with the shoot told us that they had the goats run down Pine and into that green space by the Interstate, but that the goats tried turning into the dog park instead (?). Just imagine what the hair and makeup truck was like! |

RE: More Seattle whinning
"Relax and don't walk where you see ice." Um, so I should just stay in my apartment building? That doesn't exactly seem like a solution . . . becca raises a good point, though: the building manager next-door spent basically all day yesterday shoveling, but the sidewalk is still icy. (Better than the sidewalk in front of my building, but still pretty darn icy.) I hate to say it, J, but I think salt is the only answer. |

Another favorite quote, from this morning's Metro press release: "Please dress warmly, wear appropriate footwear, and be prepared to wait. The buses that are running are expected to be significantly delayed." |

Unpublished reroute
My favorite line from the Metro weather page, for buses like the 10 and 12: "Due to adverse weather, this route is operating an unpublished reroute." Um, yeah, stay home. PS, way to get from Vita to Victrola and back in an hour, J. |
