RE: what the weeny?
"What does this picture have to do with hot dogs?"

the article is about the owner (pictured) of a hot dog restaurant announcing plans that she's opening a new location. it's not specifically about the food the restaurant serves.

my point is that we all imbibe in things that are bad for our health and this article is about someone's fashion sense. so what does someone's smoking habit have to do with anything? it's like voting against someone because you don't like their choice of favorite color.

RE: Good! We don't need more predatory businesses on the hill
@js

payday loan places are predatory in that they target a specific class of individual, the hourly worker who's living paycheck to paycheck and is using up their last dollar before the next pay day comes along. these people are so desperate for money for food, gas or rent that they don't think about the cost of the loan - sometimes 300% interest.

these loan places do nothing to help get a person out of this cycle. personally, i wouldn't have as much of an issue with them if, as a condition of granting the loan, they required recipients to take a money management course or offered a deferral/reduction of interest payments for attending subsidized career training. doing nothing but keeping people locked into the pay day loan system is predatory and tantamount to slavery. i know this because, like swift albero, i too was locked into the payday loan treadmill when i was younger.

unfortunately there are so many loopholes in most state laws that what these businesses are doing is perfectly legal. and while i'm glad cap hill isn't seeing another one pop-up, it's going to take all of us in seattle (and the state) to pressure our government to write legislation prohibiting these kinds of businesses.

stranger review...
i never got a chance to try it myself, mostly because of the lukewarm review from the stranger. personally i'm not one for heavily sauced sushi but it seems like there was interest in the place; just not enough.

looks like, from the pic, that the space is being leased as restaurant space. but i'd rather see a nice, old-fashioned sort of general store there; something like what blackbird opened in ballard with "the field house".

it would be great if she could find permanent residency in the old supercuts location. with all the traffic up and down the hill on that corner (not to mention the proximity to numerous bars) a dumpling place is sure to be a hit.

i'm hoping her pricing will be aligned with nyc dumpling houses - 5/$1.

"They're a big problem across all of the Hill right now. SPD data showed a 9% rise in break-ins both commercial and residential through September 2009..."

and yet this quote from the epcpc meeting contradicts that:

"East Precinct Commander Capt. Jim Dermody was on hand to answer many of these Capitol Hill concerns and the Central District issues.

He told CHS that his Precinct hasn't yet identified a significant increase in street robberies and is not currently planning an increase in patrols on the Hill."

sorry i couldn't make the meeting but some there are serious questions that need to be raised about what the east precinct has identified and reality.

jseattle is pretty fair in his coverage of the hill, more so than typically one-sided mainstream media. personally i don't see "pro-cop, anti-everyone else propaganda" here.

your comments seem like the ranting of a deluded individual that paints all cops with the same brush. while there are some "crooked" cops i've found that's the exception to the rule. and when a cop is murdered it's just as much a tragedy as when anyone, white, black, brown or yellow, is murdered.

mackie isn't saying people can't take a picture of his work; he's saying people taking pictures of his work for profit violates his copyright.

is mackie being overzealous and/or overly aggressive? probably. is it his right to be overly aggressive under the law? yes. will he win his suit? my crystal ball isn't working. while mackie may be a jerk he's just operating under the letter of the law; pursing every perceived claim of infringement.

besides, just because it's in public doesn't mean you can do with it what you want. i remember a post (and comments) a few years back about flowers in the public roundabouts and how people were picking them for themselves versus leaving them for others. not apples to apples but it's someone else's efforts for the benefit of the public; with someone else using the outcome of those efforts for personal gain. it seems a lot of people were up in arms about that; yet this is okay?

@defendcapitolhill

what have you done?

you rail against hipsters and then devolve into some weird diatribe referencing development and tapas/wine bars. i'm missing any logic you might have going.

according to your argument anything new is hipster driven; yet you claim they do nothing all day but wander boutiques and hang-out in over-priced condos. oh, and eat; which, doesn't everyone do that? doesn't everyone eat? so what's the big deal with someone starting a business around that simple act?

i'll ask you, what have you done? what have you created? in what ways have you helped save the "old seattle" that's supposedly being replaced by these hipsters you are raging about? i will wager that the answer is nothing.

you have every right to your opinion that the business model of social ice cream is ignorant. but when you turn it into a rant similar to that of a street-corner loony, who's gone off his meds and is one wrong look away from gunning people down, then it's hard to take you seriously.

how does an image of a gun promote gun violence?
some people sound as bad as suburban housewives wanting to ban violence in movies and video games because they think it might make little johnny want to act it out. or the religious groups that are scared that nudity and sex in a tv show will cause all the good little boys and girls to rip off their clothes and have sex in the streets in a mass orgy.

i don't see the connection between the silhouette of a gun and gun violence. i don't see how an image is promoting a certain lifestyle. if you really have such a problem with gun violence how about working to ban GUNS; you know, the actual weapons? whining about the image of a gun on wallpaper makes you seem ill informed and reactionary.

of course, it seems like your goal all along was to provoke a reaction (versus any meaningful dialogue), otherwise you wouldn't have egged people on with your second post two days after your first.

or, instead of whining, you could get a small business loan and open your own "inspired" business in an empty storefront.

while these businesses might not be run by the guy down the street, the one with the beard, riding the fixie, who makes $12 bacon sandwiches, they are businesses opening during a significant recession. i applaud the fact that they are taking a chance and opening shops that, historically, fail in their first year. plus, keep in mind that these two businesses alone will likely employ a minimum of 10 people. new jobs on the hill, yay!

don't get me wrong, i like me some $12 bacon sandwiches and would love to have a deli with store-made pickles from a barrel (pint of half sours please), but you take what you can get (or what the market demands); unless you're willing to step up and open something yourself. Besides, it could be worse; you ABSOLUTELY could be getting another money tree there.

i agree with you, for the most part; especially around the area where this mugging took place. where i hesitate to tell people to defend themselves is when they can't or when a gun is involved. yes, give the appearance you'll fight back but if there's more than one person approaching you or a gun is pulled out, it's not worth your life or an extended stay in the hospital.

this part of capitol hill can be pretty sketchy. very few people slow down or stop on these roads (including the police) making pedestrians an easy target. i'm wondering what we can do to get a few bike cops to patrol the streets between denny/olive and pike/pine/broadway?

jurisdiction?
while the usps is managed by the federal government, local governments call still enact laws that businesses, even those outside of the local jurisdiction, have to abide by.

i think this is fine legislation to pursue and while, yes, there are a lot of larger issues to tackle; my hope is that our elected officials can do more than one thing at a time. solving housing, traffic, job and gang problems is not something that can be done in the short term. junk mail, to me, seems like something that could be addressed in 2010 so why not tackle it while working on bigger issues?

and while paper can contain up to 80% recycled material most manufacturers only use about 20%. it has a lot to do with the strength of the recycled fibers and how many times you can recycle the material. sooner or later you need fresh wood pulp even with high recycled content paper. so why waste manpower, fossil fuels and damage the environment by harvesting trees, even fast growing trees, when we can just stop using so much paper?

i imagine with the cost of construction coming down and contractors being more competitive in these still tough economic times that it's POSSIBLE that city light could do this for $2M.

what if we were to hold a "night market" style party? it could be part community garage/craft sale (maybe tap people from i heart rummage), part entertainment (local bands until 11 and then down-tempo djing until sunrise) and of course food vendors (i'd think we might get via tribunali to come back out, maybe skillet and i wonder if rancho bravo would set up a stand).

though it sounds like it might be too much for such late notice but i've always liked the idea of a night market and it'd be a good way to mix two parts of the community (club kids/bar hoppers and residents). just a thought.

i tend to agree with the "non-too-happy neighbor"
while i think the idea of a dance party (or anything really) in that lot is pretty cool, the execution really sucked. blasting music at midnight in violation of noise ordinances only goes to show how selfish and self-centered some people on the hill can be. why not have the dance party earlier like at 9pm? you know, when most people probably AREN'T sleeping.

and i'm sure my comment will bring up the retort of "you live in the city, you should just get over it" or "you live in a fun neighborhood and should expect noise". true, i do expect noise and routinely sleep with my windows open during the summer with normal traffic and sidewalk noise. what i don't expect is "da club" to be outside my window at midnight and i'm sure neither did the neighbor who called the cops.

i say all this because i'm constantly seeing people comment about how that space should be taken back; to have something cool happen on a regular basis there. but it's hard for the neighborhood, as a whole, to embrace it when you have individuals who've no respect for those who live nearby. if this is how the lot is going to be used i'd rather it stay a dusty field.

studies have shown that supplements have little impact on a person's health and that eating a diet of whole foods is better for getting proper nutrition. as someone owning a health food store called healeo mr. brotman should be aware of this.

if he wanted to sell all natural, low-fat, organic smoothies using whole fruits and vegetables, supplying vitamins, minerals and antioxidants naturally and say, "these are good for you," i wouldn't have a problem. i just think business owners should be careful of the claims they make regarding their store's merchandise.

@jonglix

i'm sorry but i challenge you to list 3 mid to high-end restaurants that don't have at least an item or two on their menus that are vegetarian friendly. and i mean places other than quinn's; there's a sheep on the sign after all so the assumption is that it's a carnivore's paradise.

your assertion that "...it seems there are more places that are no-go's for vegetarians." just strikes me as false. even bars on the hill that i've gone to cater to both omnivore and vegetarian alike; more-so even than other neighborhoods in town. though seattle in general is much more accommodating than most of the rest of the country to vegetarian options.

i think vegetarians tend to confuse a few well talked about meat dishes as synonymous with an entire restaurant's menu. in my comment above i listed seven well known hill eateries that offer vegetarian options. i'm not sure what the "veggie" community is looking for; is it an all vegetarian menu? because i listed a few places that do that too. i'm just not understanding where the "no-goes for vegetarians" is coming from.

you must not get out too often...
because i know of a handful of places that offer vegetarian options.

poppy - their thalis always offer an option for vegetarians
cafe presse - looking at their menu now and there's a vegetarian omelet option along with a handful of other vegetarian options
tin table - a whole section dedicated to vegetable dishes
spinasse - while mostly meat focused there are a couple of pastas that are meat free and four sides that are vegetarian
via tribunali - at least 6 vegetarian pizzas
barrio - has a vegetarian taco option, vegetarian enchilada and the ubiquitous salad options
lark - while they've been getting press about their serving of foie gras i know they have a list of vegetable options that they call out

this of course isn't counting vegetarian restaurants like cafe flora, hillside quickie, teapot, in the bowl and all the vietnamese, thai and indian places that make vegetarian options.

it sounds like there are plenty of options and you're either not looking hard enough or just want something to complain about. granted none of these are solely vegetarian focused but paraphrasing a comment from above, "if there were more demand then restaurants would offer more of it."

RE: Swine Flu
i would tend to agree with you; to a point.

the problem with swine flu is that it's not an ordinary strain of flu that has the potential to kill just the young and elderly. swine flu has been proven to be deadly to any age cluster. i think that's why it's being treated so seriously.

also, the flu can be spread person to person by just standing in the same elevator with someone who sneezes/coughs or, possibly, by opening a door that an infected person used. the same can't be said of herpes and i don't know enough about lupus or rabies but i would assume you have to do more than just be next to someone with those diseases when they sneeze/cough.

personally, i'm not worrying myself. i'm not buying a mask, i'm not stocking up on supplies and i'm not taking extra precautions. i do wash my hands but no more than i was already doing. if i get the flu i'll deal with it then the way i've always dealt with severe flu - juice, vitamins and rest. but i'm also single and live alone; i can see where those with young children would be concerned.

RE: Electric buses: practical, cheap, not sexy.
i've also ridden a bike from denny to lake union a few times and have never had a problem; so maybe the issue is more individual.

as far as pedestrians getting killed sprinting across the street, it's not just the trolley they do it for. i've seen pedestrians darting out into traffic to catch the bus. hell, they step out into traffic when they don't want to wait for the light. saying that the trolley will be the cause of deaths is a bit melodramatic. it's not a greater cause than anything else in life.

and you don't mention the other pro-streetcar argument: getting people out of their cars and onto public transit. many people refuse to get on a bus and studies have shown that those same people WILL get on the trolley. doesn't matter if it's just their perception that a trolley is cleaner than a bus (i find that it usually is). what matters is that something is getting them out of their cars. so why should we expand service with a mode of transportation that isn't going to have a real impact on getting people out of their (usually) single-person transports?

i mostly see that off-ramp being used weekday mornings by commuters trying to get into downtown or up onto the hill; so i'm not sure what kind of impact it will have for car driving hill residents. personally, i'm glad that the ramp will be closed; it will make it easier as a pedestrian to get through that area without getting nearly run over.

many people exiting on the ramp don't understand it's a deceleration zone and that they should yield to pedestrians.

i could see sitka & spruce moving into this building. it's nearby for cap hill residents to get dinner and also close to downtown to draw a lunch crowd.

yes, more leds please
this idea was tested in a parking garage a few years back, replacing the sodium lighting with led and it proved:

1) to use less electricity than sodium lighting
2) the whiter light gave people a feeling of confidence and safety versus the orange glow of sodium lamps
3) had a longer useful life (so would solve the issue of having to replace lighting as often as is currently needed)

i'm trying to get my building start replacing our garage lighting with led technology. hopefully one day the price will come down enough to use in all the lights in my home.

capitol hill scooter owners should band together one day and try and take up all the "car spaces" on that particular block with exactly one scooter in each space. i'm guessing that the note writer from above would totally blow a gasket.

what a douche bag.

did you even read the menu?
there's a whole section dedicated to "veggies":

1) the Tin Table Salad
House Greens tossed in a Lemon Vinaigrette
2) Arugulala Salad
With Roasted Golden Beets & Reggiano in a Sherry Vinaigrette
3) Roasted Yukon Potatoes
With a Spicy Spanish Tomato Sauce
4) Green Beans
With Tamarind Chutney & Garlic
5) Local Farro Pilaf
With Cauliflower & Pistachios
6) Roasted Baby Carrots
With Crumbled Goat Cheese
7) Grilled Stuffed Eggplant Rolls
Filled with Lemon-Thyme Ricotta on Tomato Basil Sauce
8) Orecchiette Pasta with Arugula
Ear-Shaped Pasta in a Brown Butter Sauce

at least 3 of those items can be considered entrees. and the prices for most of them are around $7, so a person could get 2 or 3 to make a meal out of. so i don't quite see what you have to whine about.

the ad space, at the top of the page, is too much (and i work in advertising for a living); your pages just come off as cluttered. you really need to get rid of at least one of those spots. i hit a page here and immediately tune out the ad clutter.

now is you had a 728x90 under the chs banner and above the nav. and then maybe a 160x600 down the side i think it'd work better. but that's just my $0.02.

my $0.02
i will agree that the space and atmosphere is nice. i've been there 3 times now (all lunch) and it's felt kinda like being back at school in the cafeteria, which is what i think they were going for. the service, while shaky on day two, has matured a bit and seems to be getting better every time i go.

i don't know that i would compare it to quinn's as i feel they are two different experiences. quinn's is more experimental with their food and a pub first and foremost whereas oddfellows strikes me as more cafe that just happens to have a small bar.

as for food, i really wish the sandwiches came with something other than a pickle. for the price i'm paying (about $8) i would expect at least a small handful of potato chips. that said, the food is pretty good, not astounding, but better than a lot of places and really good for the location (just think we could still have the kfc there, bleck). here are some pics i took of the food:

shepherds pie
shepherds pie
french dip

all-and-all i think this is a very good place for lunch and will try to get over there for dinner sometime soon.

@wesa

i think he means assholes because of the trash they left behind. i walked down denny last saturday morning and saw the cardboard, mattress, ironing board and other bric-a-brac that people were using to slide down the hill the night before, just piled in the street. to me, that's asshole behavior.

to apologize for people leaving garbage in the street, when most seattlites pride themselves in being so "environmentally friendly," is wrong. i'm glad people had fun sliding down the hill but if you brought the items; take them with you after you've had your fun. to leave them in the street for someone else to clean up is being an asshole.

they need to put one of these on every bus in service. and a big salt spreader on the back. the roads would be clear in no time.

the city should also give the homeless shovels and pay them to walk around clearing the sidewalks around government owned property.

RE: not quite accurate
@calhoun

you might want to read this wikipedia article - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graffiti - as i stand by my claim that graffiti is inevitable and has "always been around". does being around make it a problem? well, that's a debatable point but the fact is that graffiti has been part of civilization since the ancient greeks and romans.

while i will agree that the majority of graffiti/vandalism is perpetrated by kids (or at least childish minds) to say that it's just the kids in this generation is short sighted and inaccurate. while you may not have seen graffiti in seattle a few decades ago i will bet dollars that it was around, somewhere, and was made by the kids of that day. and 20 years from now, there will still be kids vandalizing the city with graffiti.

preventing vandalism
"...asking neighborhood stores to restrict the same of spray paint."

i'm assuming you mean "sale" above and as such, the problem is that taggers have no respect for those who "buy" spray paint. if you get a chance to talk to taggers they're proud of the fact that they steal their paint and then go tagging.

i like the idea of being aware of what goes on in one's neighborhood but the problem there is that most tagging is taking place in the middle of the night when the majority of us are sleeping. the only way to combat this then would be to put night vision cameras up all over a neighborhood but i think we know what kind of response that's going to get here on the hill.

i don't like senseless graffiti/vandalism anymore than the next person but it's been around since the first cities were formed and is part of living anywhere that you have more than a handful of people living together. in my opinion the best prevention is to "buff" the tag quickly so these kids know that they aren't going to be able to show off to their friends because their tags will be gone the next morning.

isn't that what the new qfc, the brix condos, the condos going up across from the brix condos, the light rail line and the potential trolley line are all about?

while there may be a block or two of deserted buildings, they won't be that way for long. i've only been in seattle for four years and on the hill for 2 but broadway doesn't seem any more or less dirty than when i first saw it in 2004.

RE: hard turn
burying him there? really? what connection does ed have to THAT space? none, so why bury him there? the better idea would be to bury him in the ground under the new condo building once construction starts. i think letting ed forever stay in the place where he spent the past 40 years (although i'm sure his wishes would have been to be next to his deceased wife) is a more poetic option. i don't see the connection between him and this park - period.

and let's talk about the "poetry and collective passage". ed jackson shot himself and set his apartment on fire risking the lives of firefighters, paramedics and the safety of innocent people in the surround buildings - that's not poetic, it's selfish.

i'm sorry this guy had it rough the last few years of his life but he's not the only one. walk around the streets of capitol hill and you will see a lot of people who are ACTUALLY homeless; people who didn't shoot themselves, people who didn't set their buildings on fire. if we are going to name parks after ed or these homeless, i'd prefer it to be the homeless. they are the survivors, the ones that didn't give up. it is they who are suffering on a daily basis.

as i said above, it's sad that ed felt his only option left was to end his life but we shouldn't lionize and immortalize him as something he is not. feel sad if you like, use his passing as a catalyst for change in development of the neighborhood but honoring him by naming a park after him doesn't make any sense and it is the wrong thing to do.

RE: actually,
i want to say that i remember reading that the building owner paid a little over $5K to get mr. jackson moving assistance (moving crew) for the day of his eviction.

i too have to side with jdavin on this. while it's sad that a guy felt his only recourse was to take his own life, i'm not sure any of his actions were brave or noble. if it turns out he did set the fire, and most likely he did if it started in his unit, then he put innocent people's lives at risk and his actions were selfish at best.

had he been vocal about his plight, like the squirrel guy from eastlake, he may have actually gotten the help he needed in finding a place and may have even been a catalyst for change when it comes to turning every cheap apartment building into a condo. no, i don't feel naming a park after this man is the right thing to do. feel all of the above at once if you have to, remember him if you had any personal contact but to immortalize him by naming a park after him, in my opinion, would be wrong.

paying $12-$21 to have a pizza delivered that i have to cook myself. at the very least make the price enticing enough (under $10 max) so that i can't refuse.

personally, if i'm going to cook it myself why not just make it myself? it takes 10 minutes to make pizza dough in a food processor, 15 minutes to let it rise and 5 minutes to make a rustica-style sauce. to me, take-out pizza is a convenience food i buy when i don't want to do anything but eat it.

"...eliminates historical, architectural or cultural connections to our past"

not every old building in seattle is worthy of saving. in my opinion, the building which houses the b&o is a squat, unattractive, single-use single story building that needs to be redeveloped to suit the changing density of the neighborhood.

i'm sorry that some people who remember having their first espresso there 30 years ago won't be able to walk by the building and reminisce, but the times they are a changing. this is not to say that buildings and businesses shouldn't be preserved but let's pick our battles for structures that have ACTUAL significance. besides, more apartments will only help to drive down the cost of rent; supply and demand.

as for the business of b&o, if they have a loyal enough clientele i'm sure they'll find another spot and keep serving long into the future - just look at the soon to re-open bus stop.

not sure i'd call it an issue in seattle
since moving to seattle, i've seen more people in committed relationships getting married and having kids than in any of the other cities i've lived in. not sure what the sample composition that the seattle reporter that was mentioned is looking at; old, young, affluent, middle class, etc. so i can't really say. but my first instinct would be to disagree.

that would be my argument.

most of the people i know moved here from somewhere else where the bicycle was a form of leisure that was enjoyed on relatively flat streets. move to seattle, bring your bike, try riding it a few times and then realize, wrong bike for the city. so it sits in a bike room or locked to a fence, etc.

or it could be that these cruiser buyers just wanted some form of recreation (a toy) and are not looking to be a spandex clad tour de france wannabe (a tool). i think it's fine to point out that buying a cruiser for the seattle landscape may not be the smartest idea but to say that a bike should be for utility first is a bit narrow-minded. for some people bikes ARE just toys, to be enjoyed now and maybe never again.

one block radius
i tend to go for convenience over quality as i'm not likely to walk more than 5 minutes for what's essentially street food. but close by are two places, chopsticks and hillcrest market.

chopsticks: teriyaki there is too sweet and seems to be more sauce than anything else. decent place for noodles or udon but i'll pass on their teriyaki. another plus is that the entrees could feed two or, if you have small eaters, more. reminds me of eating at a friend's house.

hillcrest market: the closest of the two places, they used to have a sandwich counter when i first moved to the area but i assume the realized that teriyaki is the better choice. chicken is bit rubbery but if you ask them to leave it on the grill a little longer than usual it does get some crispy char along the edges. sauce is decent, not too sweet and they are very conservative with it which helps the flavor of the chicken stand out. picture of it from this weekend here - http://www.flickr.com/photos/zeebleoop/2893137899/

to me free means they're giving it away which they did. could they have messaged it better? maybe but it's done, get over it. a new business isn't required to have a "free day" regardless of who thought up the idea. but zaw did, you weren't able to participate, for whatever reason, move on.

the notion that zaw should do it again, just because you or any of our neighbors didn't get to eat free food is ridiculous. that time has passed, now it's time that if you want to try them you break out a $20 and do so.
