It appears as though a man was hit by a car on 15th and Madison, but details are fuzzy. At least 17 patrol cars, 2 fire engines, and 2 ambulances showed up. Another man in a wheel chair seemed involved as well. Update to follow. Neighborlogs intern Lucas Anderson sends in this shot of a single car accident that happened around 5:06 PM in front of the Safeway on 15th Ave. We'll get details from Seattle Fire when we can but Lucas reports that it looked like the driver was being transported to the hospital with a neck injury. Update 9:25 AM:
Seattle Police Department spokesperson Mark Jamieson said officers cited the driver for negligent driving. "She struck a parked vehicle and her vehicle flipped," Jamieson said. "We have a responsibility to control our vehicles." Jamieson said the woman told an officer that she experienced some kind of pain or cramp that caused her to lose control, strike the parked car and flip over. The driver was not cited for speed or for texting or using a cell phone. Original Post:
The 911 log lists the accident response time as 12:56 AM. A man working at the 7-11 at the intersection said the accident happened when a car traveling north on 15th Ave struck this vehicle parked in front of Insomniax Coffee. He wasn't sure what type of car flipped. If this was your car parked on 15th last night and you're just waking up this morning, sorry to be the bearer of bad news. We're checking into any injuries from the crash and any more on what caused it. The driver in Monday night's accident in which a father and two young children were hit in a crosswalk at the intersection of Aloha and 15th Ave E was arrested for drunk driving, a Seattle Police Department spokesperson tells CHS. The driver was questioned at the scene and arrested for DUI, according to Seattle Police Department spokesperson Mark Jamieson. SPD would not provide the name of the suspect. The father and the two boys, aged 1 and 3, who were hit returned home from the hospital with only minor bumps the night of the accident, the family's mother told CHS.
UPDATE 6/30/09 11:45 AM:
More Tuesday updates at the end of this post.
ORIGINAL REPORT 6/29/09 7:32 PM: The white Volvo involved in the 7:00 PM accident was stopped part way through the crosswalk where the family had been hit moments from the sidewalk. Not far away in the gutter lay a toppled stroller. Traffic at the intersection was blocked for more than an hour as emergency crews responded. UPDATE 11:21 PM: KOMO is also saying police would not say whether the driver had been arrested or only handcuffed and questioned. Information we gathered at the scene indicated that the man was being arrested. We'll keep working to confirm details and attempt to update information on the condition of the family. UPDATE 6/30/09 10:37 AM: No additional information on the condition of the man and the two children who were struck. If anybody knows the family and would like to update everybody, please contact chs@capitolhillseattle.com or call us at (206) 399-5959. Neighbor Rina reports a hit and run accident Sunday night near 18th and Howell:
No entry in the 911 log so looks like nobody was injured. We'll give SPD a call to see if they can tell us what went down. UPDATE: Not a lot more clarity from SPD but they did confirm that the accident was a hit and run involving two vehicles smashing into a third. The drivers of the dark blue Durango and the minivan both drove away from the scene and could not be located after an area search. SPD confirms that were no injuries. In early march, CHS covered an awful motorcycle accident at the intersection of Belmont and Bellevue Place. A 27-year-old woman riding her motorcycle up the hill was severely injured after a car turned into her path and struck the bike. We knew at the time from eyewitnesses that the rider's leg was badly hurt. Tonight, in a comment left on the crash coverage post that she found while searching the Web for information on the accident, CHS heard from Jess, the woman who survived that crash.
I've contacted Jess to see if there is anything the CHS community can do for her. Just knowing more information about what happened and how she is doing is enough -- but I'm sure there are lots of you out there who wouldn't mind helping out. Traffic was backed up for about 30 minutes this afternoon after a freight truck struck the Arboretum pedestrian bridge crossing Lake Washington Boulevard. A year ago next week, two dozen people went to the hospital after a charter bus carrying members of Garfield's girl's softball teams struck the same bridge. The driver of the truck appeared uninjured and was being questioned at the scene after he helpe maneuver the truck out from under the bridge and into a nearby parking lot. Details are slim but saw a series of aid response callouts to 12th Ave and E. Denny tonight around 8:47 PM -- from the scanner, heard report that a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle. Injuries unknown at this time. Not sure if it's a good sign but the incident cleared relatively quickly. Will update when I know more. Here's a look at the intersection by day on Google Street View. Crossing 12th is always a little scary -- on a dark night in this rain, it's even scarier. UPDATE 4/3/09 8:50 AM: SFD confirms a woman in her 30s was struck by a car as she was crossing the street. Fortunately, injuries were reported as minor. An apparently quiet weekend on top of the Hill but all sorts of bad stuff happening on the edges:
A few incidents involving 911 call-outs this weekend that I've been looking into:
Earlier this month, we wrote about the closing of a quiet little jewelry store on 15th Ave E. It was called DSR -- stood for Diamond, Saphires and Rubies, Inc. or Donna S. Richey or both. Store was a bit of a mystery to most of us. But not neighbor AliceE: The jewelry store was originally owned by Michael Farrell - for over 12 years that I personally know of. He also has a store on Sand Point. He sold the 15th Ave. E store to Donna a couple of years ago or so. When it was Farrell's Jewelers, it was staffed by a very knowledgeable woman who kept regular 9-5 hours. Donna is more eclectic. The shop's hours were not consistent, Donna opened in the afternoon whenever she arrived and she stayed late into the night (often past midnight) after the store was closed, repairing jewelry. Some people loved her Scotties, others not so much. She previously worked out of an office in a high-rise downtown, and was very successful. Her style didn't work so well for a store-front in a neighborhood. I hope she prospers with the next... I have kind of a weird job. I'm a reporter/editor/etc. working for my own neighborhood blog. Bradford Bohonus, besides having an amazing name, also has a weird job. He's a 'virtual reality' panoramic photographer. Around 12:30p on Friday, he was setting up for a cold and icy panoramic shot of downtown from the corner of Bellevue and Thomas when three buses entered the frame of his viewfinder: When the second bus passed me it was as if some horrible stage had been set, a chain of events that appeared hopelessly pre-determined. Two buses sliding down the hill towards a 30+ foot cliff over the I-5 interstate. This is the type of thing that one can certainly play out in their mind. I only hoped that what I thought might happen next wasn’t going to happen. As the near-tragedy became merely a bizarre entry in Snowpocalypto 2008, Bohonus says he scrambled to set up his VR camera to capture the scene. The result is this odd image of kids scuffling about on an icy street, the bus they just scrambled out of stuck,... It's Wednesday and, yes, it's my birthday. I was going to say something tomorrow but the only thing worse than people that tell you today's their birthday are the people that tell you yesterday was their birthday (it's really best to keep birthdays to yourself). We had a few reports of car accidents on the Hill last night -- sounds like there was another accident late last night involving a car and a bicyclist between Pike and Pine on Broadway. UPDATE -- SPD confirms this was car and pedestrian accident. Report:
Saw this accident between a cab and a BMW at Pine & Summit. Looks like the BMW was trying to sneak a left ahead of the cab making a right. Nasty accident. Busy day in the East Precinct yesterday. Looks like there was a car-bike incident on Aloha tonight. From Seattle LJ:
Seattle real-time 911 confirms a medic response on Aloha around the same time as the LJ report. The account above needs to be corroborated so no rush to judgment about the driver or the bicyclists. Can judge Aloha, though. Relatively narrow Aloha is a bike/car traffic danger zone so seemed only a matter of time before something like this happened. With the tension between two-wheelers and four-wheelers, expect to hear more about this incident...
