Here is the latest batch of reports from the East Precinct for the first weeks of November. We also recently reported on the rash of car break-ins plaguing the area with a map of Hill car prowl hotspots.

We have created a new section in our forums for community Crime Reports if you see something or have something happen to you that you think the Hill needs to know about.

  • 6-string thief: Sometime early this month, a person kicked in the door of a practice studio at 11th Ave's Chop House and took a 1970 Gibson L6S electric guitar. According to the very detailed report, the guitar has a natural wood finish with a custom Humbucker pickup installed near the bridge along with a custom three-way switch.
  • Wrongfully accused man attacks with umbrella: A man was detained after struggling with a police officer outside of the Harvard QFC following an incident involving the man and QFC security. Late on Friday, Novemeber 6, store security believed the man had stolen a can of beer from the store but the follow-up investigation by the police officer determined that the man had the can of beer in his pocket prior to entering the store but became angry when he was accused and began assaulting people with his umbrella. The man was released following an interview at East Precinct.

More about the L6S from VintageGuitars.org.uk

  • Two-TV burglary: On Monday, November 2 around 10 AM, a man was spotted leaving a house and walking down E. Republican near 21st Ave carrying a TV under each arm to load into his car. A neighbor called police but the man was gone by the time the officer arrived. The officer found a basement window that had been broken out giving the burglar access to the house. No suspect description was provided in the report.
  • Leash law: A man entered a 10th Ave E doctor's office on November 4th and threatened staff saying, "I'll punch you in the head." He had also been observed trying to tackle people and standing in the street stopping traffic kicking at cars and trying to knock over a motorcycle. The man eventually left the office after somebody inside brought their dog out for protection. When the officer arrived, the man was shirtless, on his hands and knees and growling at the dog. The man was taken into custody and booked into King County Jail for assault (12A.06.010), Pedestrian Interference (12A.12.015), Harassment 12A.06.040, and Criminal Trespass 1st (12A.08.040.B).
  • Bad drugs: Late on Sunday, November 1, a man reported being assaulted after "trying to buy weed" near Volunteer Park at 17th and Republican. The man had contusions and swelling on both sides of face. He was also extremely inebriated, according to the report. He could not describe his attacker beyond identifying him as the man he was trying to buy drugs from due to his condition.
  • E. Olive burglary: A burglary of a home in the 700 block of E. Olive Way netted $2,300 in ill-gotten goods on November 4.
  • 3-car haul on Summit: A break-in at a residential parking garage in the 1600 block of Summit Ave netted the thief two prowled automobiles and a stolen 2008 VW Beetle used as a getaway mobile. There were no witnesses and no suspect has yet been identified, according to the report.
  • Liberty theft: Finally, cleaning up with one from October we missed. A man can be seen on security video footage walking behind the bar at 15th Ave's Liberty and grabbing cash early in the morning of October 27. Staff at the bar said that $160 in tips and another $120 in cash from a wallet was stolen by the man who is described as a black male, 5'5", 130 pounds with "three days of facial hair growth, with short black hair, a pierced left eyebrow, and a pierced tongue with a blue ring in it," according to the report. The report says a staff member told officers the man said he was "from the Central District area of Seattle, had been born at University Hospital, and had a sister named [redacted] who was a stripper."

Here is the latest from the East Precinct crime files. Later this week, we'll also take a look at the latest monthly crime data from June released by the Seattle Police Department.

Tanning salon burglary: Broadway's Fastan tanning salon (the officer mistakenly calls it 'Fan Tan' in the report, below) appears to be yet another Capitol Hill business nailed by a burglar in recent weeks. A few days after this incident, CHS sponsor Healeo was burgled by an opportunistic thief. Check out the next entry, below, for yet another example. In this Saturday night/Sunday morning August 23rd incident, the heist included cash, two plasma TVs and six stereos. Not sure what Fastan was doing with all that A/V but somebody made off with about $3,600 in booty, according to the SPD report.

Another coffee shop hit: If you operate a cafe on the Hill and haven't been busted into yet, you're probably next on the list. The description of this business -- also burgled on August 23rd, by the way -- fits that of Cafe Argento on E. Olive and 12th. Sorry about the loss, Argento.

Messed with the wrong Camry: More burglary, this time the target was an E. Roy's apartment building's parking garage and the burglar was scared off by a car alarm:

Don't forget your card: Lots to be surprised about when digging through the SPD media reports but one that consistently shocks is how many people leave their ATM cards behind after getting cash. Don't do that. Here's an incident from late on an August Monday night.

Putting this on Facebook: Grey Gallery played host to this drama involving a 40-year-old female suspect and the 38-year-old woman she assaulted.

Unpleasant Morning Surprise

Spate of big rock vs. windshield incidents: This report from 13th Ave E and another one found from an August 20th incident on E Roy plus this picture submitted to the CHS flickr pool might indicate some kind of rock throwing shenanigan trend. Or it might be coincidence. You decide.

More problems for Madison travel agent: Here's another report involving Alem Travel which has been in the blotter before as its owner has apparently skipped town and left customers in the lurch.

Forgot gas, remembered heroin: East Precinct officers stumbled onto a heroin bust when they stopped to find out why a pickup truck was parked in the bus zone in front of Broadway market.

It's already September but we still have some mid-August tales from the East Precinct to share with you. First, a few more recent reports.

Now to the mid-August blotter reports.

  • Media critic: Speaking of The Stranger, they're the victim in this rather icky incident from the afternoon of Monday, August 17. (including the word 'feces' in this post with hope that this article might end up in Lindy West's magical Google Alert). Note that the officer's report refers to The Cuff as a 'restaurant.'

  • Value Village shopper vs. cyclist: Nearby the following day, this fracas went down in front of Value Village.

  • Another thing you can't do in Cal Anderson fountain: Later in the week, police found this man passed out in a very poorly (un)chosen location -- the Cal Anderson water feature.

  • Del Rey laptop thieves: Be careful who you come home from Belltown with.

  • BMW tire thieves: This St. Mark's woman found that somebody made off with her BMW's left rear wheel.

  • Repeat Belmont burglar: The suspect in this case is a recurring character type on the Hill. At least this one usually limits his theft to food.

  • Pretty Parlor fashion thief: Most Hill shoplifting incidents involve grocery stores and clothing shops. Here's another for the latter category.

  • Sports talk: This violent incident from the early morning of Wednesday, August 19, reportedly started over an argument about sports.

  • Egg and ketchup attack: This tale of neighbor vs. neighbor involves egging and ketchup squirting. Very mature, Belmont Ave E.

  • Not another Broadway pot bust: Before you get your NORML panties in a bundle, note that this driver was arrested for various vehicular offences not the blunt the officer allegedly found in the car. Then note that the officer randomly checks for information on passing license plates. Note also that the officer let one of the car's occupants leave because the person had to 'go to work.'

  • Street robbery at Summit/Olive: Nothing funny about this one. Guy got beat up and robbed of $300 cash early on August 17th.

  • Broadway Market parking lot rage: Lastly, here's an incident that illustrates at least one reason you should be careful about who you flip off.

Before we dig into the Seattle Police Department incidents reports from the weekend, here's a collection of reports from the week previous. The latest monthly crime stat updates have also been released so we'll be digging into those soon.

  • A bias investigation was conducted for this Friday, August 14th incident involving a 33-year-old male victim who reported being threatened by a group of suspects that could not be located.

  • Early on Sunday, August 16, police found a 26-year-old man who had been beaten up and robbed of his cell phone by what was described a s a group of 4 to 6 black males at the intersection of Bellevue and Summit. The victim was bleeding from the nose and had multiple contusions on his face but declined treatment when the emergency crew arrived. The victim was intoxicated and had difficulty recalling the details of the assault.
  • Here's more on an arrest we wrote about last week of a man busted on suspicion of identity fraud at the Chase bank branch on Broadway near Pike. At the time, we thought the name Remy Martin must have been part of his alleged con but, turns out, it's the name that was used when Martin was booked into King Count Jail.

  • On August 14th, a Sea-Tac man reported that he was out $4,000 for a ticket to Addis Ababa from a travel agent on Madison. The man complained that Alem Travel had closed and that he could not reach anybody regarding his ticket, according to the report.
  • On August 16th, roommates living in an apartment in the 1600 block of 15th Ave reported a burlgar had entered their residence and made off with a Bianchi hybrid bicycle, a Hewlett Packard laptop and three rings. The responding officer reported finding prints on objects in the apartment that were entered into evidence.
  • On August 14th, a cab driver repoted getting stiffed by two customers who were later tracked down by officers in the Shell parking lot at Pike and Broadway.

On 08-14-09 I was working a marked patrol unit as 3E23. At 2337 hrs I was dispatched to an assault at Broadway/E Pike St where a cab driver was the victim. When I arrived I spoke to the victim, V/ said he picked up two fares, S/Lloyd and W/I ' at 4 Av/Virginia St and drove them to Broadway/E Pike St and the fare was $7.75. While stopped at the light at Harvard Av/E Pike St he said both passengers got out and began to walk away. V/ said he called after them to pay for the ride and S/Lloyd turned and kicked the front passenger side door of his cab causing damage. He said S/Lloyd then opened that door and pulled on the dispatch computer mounted on the, dash and ripped off the credit card reader and pulled wires out. He also grabbed, his trip log sheets and threw them into the street. V/ pointed to the intersection where I could see papers blowing around.

Catching up on our blotter duties, here are some of the more interesting cases handled by the SPD in the East Precinct in the past two weeks. A few have been touched on by other outlets but fairly certain you won't find the actual reports the journalists are getting their information from anywhere but here. And from the East Precinct front desk, of course.

  • CHS noted that there had been no police report filed in this alleged hate crime that occurred the first night of the Capitol Hill Block Party when the Seattle PostGlobe first reported on it. Since that time, the victim contacted police to report the beating and the assault is being investigated as a bias crime. Police are seeking the five suspects. Here is the incident report:

  • A man was arrested in an armed robbery at Summit and Howell in which a twenty dollar bill was taken from the victim. The alleged knifepoint robbery occurred on Sunday, August 2 around 5:30 PM. The victim described the suspect to police as a black male in his late 30s wearing a black shirt...

The following are based on incident reports from the Seattle Police Department’s East Precinct. They represent the officers’ accounts of the events described.

On the afternoon of Saturday, Aug. 1, officers on a routine foot patrol through Cal Anderson Park were approached by a man who complained that another man was drinking beer in the park in clear violation of park rules and Seattle law. Not only that, but that man, who was drinking a Pabst Blue Ribbon 40-ouncer, was being rude as well. Officers were directed to the suspect, who was sitting on the “grassy knoll” just north of the Bobby Morris Playfield. He was in his mid-40s and was clearly intoxicated. At first glance he seemed to be offering sips of beer to his pit bull. Concerned that the pit bull might attack the officers if physical force became necessary, they asked the man to step away from his dog. The man refused and became belligerent. They grabbed him by his side. But he broke free and ran away, a process that was repeated several times before officers...

Here's the latest from the East Precinct's arrest and incident reports:

  • Reunited bike: A Federal Ave man was reunited with his stolen $1,500 red and silver Avenue Broadway bicycle. When the man reported the bike had been stolen from his yard, he provided the responding officer with pictures of his missing ride. The officer recognized the bike. It has been turned in and was being held in the precinct's collection of found and stolen property.
  • Angry bike thief: An officer spotted a man struggling with a locked bicycle on E. Pike near 10th Ave E around 2 AM in the morning last Thursday. The officer's report said the man was 'forcefully' trying to pull the bike from its security chain. The man claimed he was angry at the bike. He was arrested for attempted theft.
  • ATM ripoff: A Kirkland man got ripped of to the tune of more than $700 after accidentally leaving behind his bank card in an ATM at 14th and Pike. Somebody took the card and racked up the charges at 23 different locations, the police report said.

Getting back into the swing of things with blotter reporting by digging through the Seattle Police Department media reports filed for Pride weekend. Don't mean to besmirch the celebration. Instead, we should all revel. Thousands of people visited the Hill during Pride and, for the most part, things were calm. Except when they weren't:

Guerrilla dance party
By now, most of us have heard the story of the dance party that broke out in the empty lot at Pine and Belmont last Saturday night. SPD told us that one person was arrested in what was otherwise a crime-free incident. Here is the narrative from the report the responding officer filed regarding that arrest:

The 23-year-old suspect was booked into jail for investigation of malicious mischief. We'll check to see what we can find out from the legal system about what happens to him.

Other reports

  • In more traditional Cap Hill crime, this 48-year-old Ohio man reported an unwelcome hugger made off with his wallet Wednesday night:
  • Friday night featured a dispute...

CHS Report: 4:44PM - Cal Anderson Park - Indecent Exposure
- A 30-year-old woman was arrested and charged with indecent exposure after her bizarre behavior in Cal Anderson Park drew the attention of passersby and the SPD. Witnesses state that they noticed the woman exposing her breasts when she rolled over in her sleep in the northeast corner of the park. One witness reported telling the woman that she was exposing herself at which point she rolled back over. Later, two witnesses said they noticed that the woman's shorts and underwear were around her knees. When they attempted to cover the woman with her bag, they found that she was apparently covered in fecal matter. Finally, one witness concerned for the woman's well-being, summoned the officers who arrested the suspect and had her transported to her to East Precinct where, the officer report notes, she removed her shorts while waiting in the holding cell.

Here is our weekly examination of Capitol Hill's criminal and police activity in our section of the East Precinct. Many of the items come from Central District News' daily police scanner reports. Starting this week, I will also include items I've found digging through the investigation reports collected from East Precinct HQ. I will try to select items of importance and interest and occasionally include some of the report verbatims as I have done below with a redacted section from the write-up on the Howell air rifle incident. When i include reports, I will make sure victim names and information as well as suspect names are fully redacted as sometimes the standard redaction blacklines in the public reports doesn't fully obscure the information. In the case of the Howell airgun incident, we have already revealed the name of the suspect so I've left the SPD's standard redaction marks in place.
