Follow-up from a participant who was scheduled to be part of the community garage sale day at CHAC only to find the doors locked. Sounds like the day wasn't a total bust for him after all.
I and two women had separate sales at CHAC at the bottom of the ramp leading to the lower level theater space. They showed up at 9:30 AM and I at around 10:30 AM. We set up and went to work without meeting anyone from CHAC. The door was open to go into the lower level theater, but it was too gloomy in there to set up. Eventually, when I saw it was not going to rain, I set up at the top of the ramp. Quite a few people showed up knowing that there was a sale going on due to seeing info on the garage sale website or other advertising. We also snagged a few people as they were walking by. I'd say it was a successful day. Later on the guy who seems to be in charge of CHAC came by and was very nice. We never even knew about the problem you mention. He also invited us to come back on Monday for their closing sale. I think the two...
It was kind of crazy to see all the garage sale shoppers wandering around yesterday with the CapitolHillGarageSale.com map. Definitely gave us a nerdy thrill. Next year, we need to make a cooler -- and easier to read! -- map. Here's a few more lessons we learned:
The Capitol Hill Community Garage Sale Day is finally here. See you tomorrow!

Neighbors, prepare to shop and haggle. The Capitol Hill Community Garage Sale Day map is online. CHCGSD is this Saturday, June 14th at locations across the Hill. Most sales run from 9a to 5p.

Here are a few more treasures you'll find this weekend at the Capitol Hill Community Garage Sale Day. A few more hours to sign up to hold your own sale -- we'll put the community map together tonight.
Having a sale? Post your photos to flickr with tag capitolhillgaragesale and we'll add them to the hype machine! ![]()
We're putting the final touches on organizing this Saturday's Capitol Hill Community Garage Sale Day. If you want to hold a sale as part of the day, you have a little more time to register -- sign up closes tomorrow night so go to www.capitolhillgaragesale.com and add your info.
Also, to get you in the mood, we'll preview a few of the incredible items you'll find on Saturday....
The Capitol Hill Community Garage Sale Day is June 14th. Now that we're in June, it's time to get your shit together and sign up. Plus, you have even fewer excuses now -- we just found out that Jim Mueller LLC will host our second community space for neighbors who need a place to hold their sales. The Jim Mueller location will be near the old Deano's site at Madison and East Denny -- they have a bunch of action planned for the day as they begin the process of cleaning out the old and making way for the new. They'll also have free coffee and donuts.
Your second option for a table in one of the shared spaces is up near 12th and Pine at Capitol Hill Arts Center. So, really, now you have no excuse. Register for a space or let us know about your sale today. Also, the people have spoken so we're making The Service Board our Focus Non-profit for this year's sale. We're pledging 25% of the proceeds from our own sale to the organization and we'll encourage everybody to do the same -- or choose one of the other nominees...
It's pretty easy. Nominate your favorite local nonprofit here.
Last Capitol Hill Community Garage Sale Day post today, I promise. Oh, wait, don't forget that URL: www.capitolhillgaragesale.com!
As part of the community day, we want to encourage people to donate a percentage of their proceeds to a local nonprofit. It's all informal so how everybody decides to give is up to them. But we thought it would be cool to focus attention on one nonprofit and ask participating neighbors to make a donation. So, who deserves the focus for CHGSD 2008? Please make your nominations in the comments. We pledge 25% of the proceeds from our sale (of course we're having a sale at our house) to whatever nonprofit gets the most comments here by 5p on Friday. Then we'll encourage everybody else to jump in, too.
The Capitol Hill Community Garage Sale Day -- www.CapitolHillGarageSale.com -- is June 14th. Neighbor Sabrina made this rather nice flyer to help promote the big day. You can help out by downloading it and making a few prints to post around your part of the neighborhood.
If you want to show off your own design skillz, add your own flyer design in the comments. There's still plenty of time to register your sale for the big day. As a reminder, Capitol Hill Arts Center has agreed to host a few neighbors as part of their own sale that day -- that space is limited so register today at CapitolHillGarageSale.com.
With all the crime and graffiti reports souring this blog, how about some good news. We have one location lined up for a public space on Capitol Hill Community Garage Sale Day -- June 14 and are working on another.
Capitol Hill Arts Center will be holding a garage sale of their own and making space available to neighbors who need it. Space is limited so register your sale today. No selling guns/ammo, animals, food etc. Be cool. Respect the space. Sell your junk. Have fun. All the info you can eat at CapitolHillGarageSale.com

You can make the Capitol Hill Community Garage Sale Day -- look, an official Web site! http://www.capitolhillgaragesale.com/ -- a Capitol Hill doubleheader. June 14th is also the first pitch of the Bat N-Rouge Drag Queens vs. The Dykes softball game at Bobby Morris Play Field. Get rid of your old junk, pick up a few treasures from your neighbor's sale and catch a ballgame. Good times.
Only four more weeks to clean out your closets for the Capitol Hill Community Garage Sale. The big day is Saturday, June 14th. We have 10 sales on the list so far -- we know the rest of you are trying to decide if you can part with that awesome orange couch in your basement before you commit. That's cool. When you're ready, add your sale to the list.
We'll announce some more goodies next week but basic plan is to compile the list of neighbors having sales, put together an online map and promote the day around the Hill both online and off.
West Seattle's community garage sale is this Saturday. Check it out to see community recycling retail on grand scale.
We're organizing a slightly more casual version for Capitol Hill on Saturday, June 14th. CHS will organize the locations, promote the event and provide a few other solutions like getting an organization involved to take your unsold items as donations. All you need to do is pull together your valuable junk, invite a few friends to join you and sign-up using the form below. Oh, and it's all free, by the way. So, really, you have no excuse. Looks like the vote to decide what day we should hold a Capitol Hill community garage sale day is coming down to a race between May 31st and June 14th. If you care, make sure to vote.
To get you in the mood, the folks from Justice Works! have been holding a sale on Wednesdays and Saturdays to raise funds for their organization. Their mission: "undoing racism in the criminal justice system as experienced by African Americans." We haven't stopped by to see what's for sale but we like their shiny gold posters. Check em out on 15th Ave just past Chutney's Grille on the Hill(e).
How about a day to rally around, clean out your closets and make some pocket change? Basic concept -- declare a CHCGSD, collect and post addresses of various sales in the Capitol Hill area, meet your neighbors. We're going to declare it so you might as well say when.
We're jealous of West Seattle. Not only do they have a better neighborhood blog than we do, but the community is organizing a neighborhood garage sale day. Garage sales are good for a neighborhood. They're green and they give you an excuse to mingle with your neighbors. They also reduce the need for tacking up all sorts of goofy signs to advertise. If you want to see it action, check out Greenwood's mother-of-all Seattle community garage sales this weekend.
So, neighbors, have any free weekends coming up? Fun to meet so many of you tonight at the book & beer swap -- and thanks a bunch for all the nice things you had to say about CHS. For those of you who couldn't make it, here's what the people on the Internet look like. For those of you who were there, THANKS FOR BEING SO NICE! We'll do this again soon -- maybe keep the book theme, maybe branch out to something like bad paintings acquired at garage sales. We had a table full of neighbors. Smith was a good host (we finally met Linda!). Some great books were swapped and some not so great ones, too. Does it say a good thing or bad thing about a book when two copies show up at a book swap? Happened with two different titles. Perhaps we lack in diversity. Oh, btw, this is the time for your substantive comment, beneficiary of the leftover books. Hit it.
While we celebrate Capitol Hill's glossy front-side, many stories are lurking in the shadows and back alleys. Here are a few we found this week.
1) Why the Hopvine as your home base? Do you live in the neighborhood? I do, a mere three blocks away. But I've been to many open mics over the years, and it has been by far the best pool of musicians. They also have an awesome staff. 2) Why not the Canterbury? The Canterbury has its own perks - namely, foozball. I challenge everyone to try and beat me. 3) Old timer, how has "the 15th Ave crowd" changed since you started playing? It's getting younger. There are babies everywhere. The other parts of Capitol Hill are filtering...
The driveways near Volunteer Park Cafe are busy with yard sales today. Here's neighbor Karin's tip from the CHS Yard Sale Post:
MULTI-FAMILY YARD SALE! Multiple houses on the 1500 block of 17th Ave E will be out front with lots of goods for sale. Kids stuff & toys, household, outdoor gear, etc.All scone prices final, of course. That old pair of skis? Feel free to negotiate.
Hopefully these items aren't connected.
Lots of people coming to the CHS site today having searched for some variant of Blue Angels -- here is the "search cloud" of terms that brought people to the site so far this week.
