Here is a combo we didn't predict when we compiled our list of proposed neighborhood joint ventures. Smith's Linda Derschang and Volunteer Park Cafe's Erika Burke are combining forces on a new cafe down on 10th Ave around the corner from the Pike/Pine corridor. Joint will be in the old Oddfellows building and will be called, yes, Oddfellows. It's also the former location of the Freehold Theater so the Slog commentary is predictably bitter about the gentrifying project. Given the recent concerns about fostering the arts in a rapidly changing area of the city, it's a little surprising to see these two step into such a symbolic hornet's nest. Apparently, the opportunity was too good to pass up.
To tell the god'shonesttruth about it, Capitol Hill is not one but many neighborhoods. But in a few things, we try to find unity. For example, the 2Tue Capitol Hill art walk, every second Tuesday for the rest of your lives. For those of you scoring at home or even if you are by yourself, today happens to be the second Tuesday of the month. Though it's grey and kind of dreary, you really should consider getting out of the house and taking your umbrella for a stroll. The event is centered around the Pike/Pine corridor but nobody would complain if you started your evening with a wander to see Victrola on 15th's wall gallery. Highlighted this month is Babeland's presentation of works from artist Sally Kirk: This series of small oil paintings enters into the realms of the sensual, the provocative, and the playful. The paintings highlight the mind--imaginative master of other insistent organs. We don't know what that means. Enjoy!
The Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce is organizing a Capitol Hill Street Sweep this weekend and need you to help clean up the 'hood.
Key details from the CHCC: WHEN: Saturday, October 13, 2007 • 9:00 AM – 12:00 PMWe've helped in clean-up events in other parts of the city so can assure you that it's usually a positive experience -- basically a leisurely walk while wearing an orange vest and carrying a groovy grabber tool thingy and a garbage bag. You walk around the area the clean-up is targeting and pick up garbage like fast-food wrappers and discarded latte lids. Sometimes you find nifty drug paraphernalia. For this clean-up, the CHCC is expanding its target...
