It's that time of year when it gets dark by 5pm. As an "post-work runner", this means that it's back to running in the dark. And the rain. And the cold. Ugh. My adaptations: 1) I stick with the same path so I know what to expect on each block and at every intersection; 2) I try to wear clothes that are light colored; and 3) I assume that cars can't see me. My bad habits: 1) I wear my iPod; and 2) I refuse to wear blinkies. I'm wondering how the rest of you post-work runners adapt. Do you dig out the blinkies? Do you join a gym? Do you become a morning person? Or do you just stick with your same routine? For your runners and wannabe journalism types, here's a fun route for you to try on Election Day. Hits most of the Capitol Hill-area polling locations. 5.1 miles. Run for the White House! View Larger Map
One of the first things I noticed when I moved to Seattle was how fit everyone was. Granted I was coming from Chicago, the land of jumbo sausages, jumbo pizza, and jumbo people. But Seattle people are extreme. Kayaking to work, really? Nevertheless, I agreed that it could be fun to take advantage of the year-round non-freezing weather and keep fit in "nature" -- so I joined the Capitol Hill Runners.
We aren't a formal organization. Frankly, we avoid eye contact whenever possible. If I'm running on the east side of the street, my CH Runner buddy takes the west side. If a runner is in front me, I wouldn't dare pass and face the pressure of staying in front of her. I listen to my iPod and the other Runner listen to theirs. Everyone is happy. Given the geography of Capitol Hill, we tend to run most of our routes on the north-south streets, rather than the hillier east-west streets. Runners clearly prefer some streets over others -- Federal and 17th are particular favorites. Madison is the most difficult...
We got the following comment tonight on our tip post:
I'm interested in finding running partners who live in N. Capitol Hill. I'm female, can run during the mid-day (and early morning) and can run anywher from a 9-10 minute mile. Am looking for people interested in running 4-5 miles (maybe more) a couple of times a week. Would you (CHS) be willing to post this? thanks, running in Seattle kathrynhds@hotmail.com Dear running in Seattle, while this wasn't exactly the kind of tip we were hoping to get on the tip post (think "Hey, we just saw Conan O'Brien order a double short soy over at Fuel"), we live to serve. --j
