  • Starbucks heist: The Madison Park Starbucks was ripped off in a weekend burglary. Police were called to the popular coffee shop around 1:30 AM Saturday morning to a report of multiple people inside the cafe seen on security video loading something from inside the building into a waiting vehicle. Police arrived to find the shop’s safe missing and the suspect vehicle already gone from the area. Police searched the area but there were no reported arrests. Continue reading

  • 10th/Pine stabbing: A man in his 20s was taken to the hospital after a Monday night stabbing near 10th and Pike in a dispute reported near the Rancho Bravo restaurant. Seattle Police and Seattle Fire were called to the scene just after 10 PM to a report that a male had suffered multiple stab wounds to his upper body. He was treated at the scene and taken to Harborview. We do not have an update on his condition. According to East Precinct radio updates, the stabbing followed an altercation involving a group on 10th Ave. There were no immediate arrests reported.
  • E Union shootout: A man in his 30s suffered non-life threatening injuries to his foot in a shooting reported early Tuesday morning between 20th Ave and 23rd Ave along E Union. The 12:38 AM response brought police and Seattle Fire to the intersection. According to East Precinct radio updates, the man told police he had been shot at and exchanged gunfire in the incident. SPD was investigating a large shooting scene with shots fired reported across a two or three block area. There were no reported arrests.
  • First Hill apartment construction fire: A fire at the street level of an under construction eight-story First Hill luxury apartment building damaged the new building Monday morning. Seattle Fire was called to the scene around 11:30 AM and began battling the blaze at Boylston and Spring, the construction site for The Victor. There were no reported injuries. We don’t yet have a cause of damage estimate for the nearly completed building from Seattle Fire. Continue reading

  • Central District robbery string: Police were searching for the SUV used as a getaway car in a series of robberies reported on the streets around 20th Ave and Yesler Monday morning. According to SPD, the first armed robbery was reported around 11:15 AM in the 200 block of 20th Ave S. “Four additional robberies were reported in succession along with one assault,” SPD reports. Police say victims described a dark blue SUV used in the ripoffs. “Officers responded to the multiple scenes and attempted to locate the suspects and vehicle” but the suspects were not located. SPD did locate three stolen vehicles in the area during the searches, according to the report.
  • First Hill fire: Investigators were unable to determine what caused a major fire in a boarded up First Hill apartment building last week. The Wednesday night blaze in the 1000 block of 9th ave brought a two-alarm response from Seattle Fire as it rescued a 26-year-old man from the top floor of the four-story building slated for demolition and frequented by squatters. The man was not seriously injured and was taken to the hospital for further evaluation, Seattle Fire reports. Continue reading

  • 17th Ave shooting: Police say a man suffered non-life threatening injuries to his hand and torso in a Friday afternoon shooting in a 17th Ave parking lot. According to the SPD brief, the victim told police he was shot in a dispute with the occupants of a vehicle that fled the scene in the 1700 block of 17th around 2:35 PM. A search for the suspects was not successful. Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call the SPD Violent Crimes Tip Line at (206) 233-5000.
  • 14th and Denny death investigation: Seattle Fire says SPD is investigating after a man was found dead Wednesday morning in the 1800 block of 14th Ave near E Denny Way. According to Seattle Fire, a 35-year-old male was found dead at the scene. Witnesses reported a man who appeared to have been homeless found in a an apartment building stairwell around 11:30 Wednesday morning. There were no reported signs of foul play. We’ve asked SPD for more details.

911 | Police search for Summit Ave BB gun sniper

  • Summit BB shooter: A man was shot in the back by multiple BBs believed to have been fired by a shooter armed with an airgun in a nearby building Saturday afternoon at Summit and E Olive St. Police and Seattle Fire were called to the scene just before 1 PM where a man was hit by the airgun fire. Seattle Fire said the man suffered minor injuries and did not require hospitalization. According to East Precinct radio updates, witnesses said the shootings were an ongoing issue from an upper story of a nearby apartment building. Police were gathering information about residents of units facing the area of the shooting but there were no reported immediate arrests.
  • Gun violence: The area around Garfield High has cooled down following increased SPD patrols and campus security after a spike in gun violence around the school. Police did investigate reported gunfire Friday night just after 10:30 PM near 22nd and Alder where multiple vehicles were reported to be involved and police found shell casings on the pavement but no injuries were reported. Earlier on Friday just after midnight, a reported shooting on 19th Ave turned out to be related to a car fire that spread to a residence. Meanwhile, more serious gun incidents continued in the city’s south where a man was shot and killed Friday night in the Rainier Valley. Sunday night brought a second weekend gun incident to the area with one sent to the hospital after a shooting on Rainier Avenue South.
  • 11th/Thomas hit and run: Seattle Police investigated a hit and run collision that sent a bike rider to the hospital but there were no reported arrests late last month. According to East Precinct radio updates, the rider was hit near 11th and E Thomas around 7:30 PM on Wednesday, May 31st. Police were looking for a vehicle described as a new looking white “crossover”-style SUV but did not locate the car or the driver.
  • Country Doctor embezzlement: A former finance director at Seattle nonprofits including the Country Doctor Clinics has pleaded guilty to two felony counts of federal wire fraud. Susana Tantico was charged with embezzling more than $3 million from Country Doctor  and the violence prevention group Community Passageways between 2011 and 2020. Prosecutors say Tantico spent the money on gambling, clothing, and travel, and created false entries to conceal her actions.

911 | Teen shot in chest in MLK Way drive-by, explosions reported at Belmont Place encampment fire

  • Teen shot in drive-by: A 17-year-old was shot in the chest and an address error delayed Seattle Fire’s response in a reported drive-by shooting early Friday morning on MLK Way. Police were called to the 1100 block of MLK Way South just before 1 AM Friday to the reported shooting and reported finding evidence of a shooting involving a 9mm handgun. Seattle Fire units were dispatched to the scene but were first sent to an incorrect address in the 1100 block of MLK Way — 1.3 miles north of the incident. A similar error occurred in the response last October to the shooting on MLK Way that took the life of neighborhood business owner D’Vonne Pickett, Jr. SPD says the victim was shot multiple times and Seattle Fire reported the teen was in serious condition when transported to Harborview by Seattle Fire. There were no reported arrests and we do know have an update on the victim’s condition. The shooting comes as the East Precinct has boosted patrols around Garfield High School following a string of gun violence in the area of the school.
  • Belmont Place encampment fire:

    Thanks to a CHS reader for the picture and report from the scene

    Seattle Fire rolled out a full response to a large encampment fire that threatened a building at Belmont Pl E and Bellevue Pl E Saturday night. According to SFD, the fire did not spread to the nearby structure but residents reported several explosions amid the massive wall of flame from the encampment on a property lined up for long-delayed development. There were no reported injuries.

  • Fatal 23rd Ave crash: A 57-year-old woman died Friday afternoon in a single-car crash at 23rd Ave and Judkins. Seattle Police say witnesses to the just after 4:30 PM crash reported the driver appeared to try to beat the intersection’s red light and overcorrected, “causing the vehicle to leave the roadway and impact a tree.” SPD said the southbound lane of 23rd Ave was shut during the investigation.
  • DUI driver strikes cop car: East Precinct officers had an easy time tracking down a suspected DUI driver after an early Tuesday morning crash smashed up a police patrol car. SPD reports officers inside the precinct headquarters at 12th and Pine heard the loud crash outside the building and saw the suspect vehicle turn onto E Pike after swiping into the police cruiser. Police tracked down the driver and placed the 25-year-old woman under arrest for suspected DUI and hit and run.
  • Smoky Sunday carport fire: A column of smoke that rose above Capitol Hill on the early evening of Sunday, May 28th came from a car fire in the carport of a 1700-block Summit Ave building. Seattle Fire says its units were able to quickly extinguish the blaze but not before it sent a cloud of thick smoke above the neighborhood.

911 | No updates from police in deadly Cal Anderson shootings, ‘open carry’ man busted on E Pine, suspect crashes into police cars

  • No updates in Cal Anderson murders: Police have not announced any updates in the investigation of the Saturday, April 29th shooting that left two brother dead on the west side of Cal Anderson Park. CHS reported here on the murders of brothers Ray and TT Wilford and the few details released by SPD about the crime. Community group the Cal Anderson Park Alliance says violence in the park is linked with a “drug market” on Nagle Place and is calling on the city to implement changes to make the area safer.
  • ‘Open carry’ man busted on E Pine: A nearby business owner says a shirtless man reported waving a gun and acting erratically was taken into custody by police Wednesday night, May 3rd at Pine and Boylston — but not before police initially allowed the gun carrier to “open carry” his weapon. According to the owner, police were called just after 8 PM about the dangerous behavior. An officer responded to the call telling the business that police had passed through the area and reported the man “didn’t seem to be bothering anyone” and cited Washington State’s open carry laws. But the calm apparently didn’t last long. The business owner said SPD soon called back and reported the man was finally taken into custody after multiple people reported he had begun “pointing the gun at cars and directing traffic with it.”
  • Suspects in custody, police cars smashed: Monday morning started with some smashed-up Seattle Police cruisers in a Capitol Hill street. SPD says the incident began around 8:20 AM near E Thomas when police responded to two subjects in a running vehicle which officers learned was stolen before they arrived on scene. “While giving commands over the PA system, the driver woke up, put the car in reverse and backed into the building before putting it into drive and hitting several patrol vehicles,” SPD reports. Police say the suspect drove about a block north before hitting a telephone pole. Police says one suspect was booked for possession of stolen vehicle, possession of stolen property, hit and run, DUI, and eluding. The other suspect was  booked for obstructing.
  • Oddfellows employee assaulted: Co-workers have been raising funds to help with expenses after an employee at Capitol Hill’s Oddfellows cafe reported he was jumped at a nearby bus stop and stabbed in the neck Sunday, April 23rd. According to the fundraiser, the employee was waiting for the bus around 5 PM at Pine and Broadway when he was attacked and stabbed in the neck. Continue reading

  • First Hill sexual assault investigation: Police are seeking witnesses to an assault early Monday on First Hill:
    On April 7th at approximately 7:53 a.m., there was a serious assault that took place near Madison Street and Terry Avenue. Detectives are looking for additional witnesses including a witness who tried to assist the victim and walk with her to the Emergency Room at Virginia Mason Medical Center. If you have any information, please contact the SPD Sexual Assault/Child Abuse unit at (206) 684-5575.
  • Pike/Pine gunfire: Seattle Police responded to the area around Summit and Pike early Tuesday morning after multiple 911 callers reported gunfire in the area and at least one witness reported two men shooting at each other. According to East Precinct radio updates, around ten gunshots were reported just before 5:30 AM. Police were able to locate a person at a nearby apartment believed to have been connected to the altercation and were interviewing her but reported no immediate arrests.   • Minor Ave jewelry heist: A man reported being held up for $5,000 in jewelry in an early Saturday morning gunpoint robbery outside Capitol Hill’s Still Liquor. SPD said the area resident called police to report the hold-up that went down on Minor Ave just after last call Saturday morning and said the armed trio who ripped him off made off with his two chains worth a combined $5,000. The gunman and the two accomplices reportedly fled the area from Pine and Melrose on foot. Police searched for the group but reported no arrests. SPD provided no suspect descriptions in its report on the armed robbery. Nightlife gun violence has been and ongoing issue in the area with several shootings related to the now shuttered Mint Lounge.   • Body found: Police and the Medical Examiner were investigating after a man was found dead of a presumed overdose next to a Belmont Ave E garbage dumpster Saturday morning. According to police, a resident at the apartment building was exiting out the parking gate and found the man dead near Belmont and Thomas. Seattle Fire was called to the scene and notified police of the possible overdose. Police said the man was identified by his King County Jail bracelet. CHS has not been able to confirm the identity of the victim. Police say homicide detectives came to the scene to investigate and the Medical Examiner was investigating to determine an official cause of death.
  • Central Cafe and Juice Bar break-in: Police say they arrested a man who broke into E Cherry’s Central Cafe and Juice Bar and trashed the place doing thousands of dollars in damage in an early Saturday morning burglary. According to police, officers were dispatched to a burglary in progress at the 2500 block E Cherry business just before 6 AM. The business owner was also on the way to the shop and reported video showing the suspect had left the scene moments before officers arrived. While officers were reviewing evidence with the owner, SPD says an officer spotted the suspect nearby and was able to identify him. The suspect was arrested and being booked into jail for investigation of burglary. SPD says the break-in caused thousands of dollars worth of damage to the shop. In an update, Central Cafe and Juice Bar said they were able to clean up much of the damage on their own and declared the damageful burglar the “world’s dumbest criminal.”
  • East Precinct gets help for Macklemore show: SPD had to up its game for Macklemore’s surprise show Monday night:
    It was reported on social media that local musical artist Macklemore would be performing a free last-minute concert at Neumos that would be first-come-first-served. Officers from South Precinct came up to assist in monitoring the area. There were no issues and the concert completed around 2130.
