10 years later: The murder of an East Precinct officer

Thursday night’s Halloween celebration also brought a sad anniversary for the East Precinct.

October 31st, 2009, veteran Seattle Police officer Timothy Brenton was murdered and the rookie officer he was on patrol with that night was shot in an act of anti-police violence that shocked the community and set off a manhunt to find his killer.

Christopher Monfort was convicted of murder, attempted murder, and arson, and sentenced to life in prison in 2015 for the attack. Monfort was spared the death penalty but faces a life behind bars without the possibility of parole for murdering a law enforcement officer. CHS included one somber stop at 29th and Yesler on what was otherwise a fun and peaceful Halloween Friday night. Five years ago, Officer Timothy Brenton was gunned down in what investigators would call an assassination of the veteran officer as he sat in his patrol car with a trainee partner. CHS heard the East Precinct radio broadcasts that Halloween night 2009 as partner Britt Sweeney called for help. She had been grazed by a bullet and was in obvious, painful distress. Brenton died at the scene.

Friday night at Brenton’s 29th and Yesler memorial, CHS found flowers and a cup of coffee left for the fallen officer. Continue reading
