With demolition plan for 120-year-old Wilshire Building, seven-story affordable housing project’s ‘fast track’ finally ready to play out on Broadway

The Bait Shop block isn’t the only stretch of Broadway being readied for redevelopment to add new housing to the core of Capitol Hill. Demolition permit filings this month show the project to create a new seven-story affordable apartment building in the 200 block of Broadway E is rounding into shape after years of planning.

CHS reported here in November 2022 on the Seattle Landmarks Board rejection of Broadway’s Wilshire Building for historical protections, clearing the way for the now more than 120-year-old structure to be demolished to make way for a new seven-story, mixed-use building with 95 apartments, five ground floor live/work units, and new street-level retail space.

The project has been developed by Cannon Commercial, TAP Collaborative, and $3 million in affordable housing funding from the 2021 round of Office of Housing grants. A company registered to Joe Cannon and TAP’s Rebecca Ralston purchased the property for $6.25 million in 2018, according to King County records. Continue reading

East Review Board signs off on early design for 600 Broadway E development

The planned massing of the preferred “u-shaped” design

The East Design Review Board got its first big decision of 2024 squared away Wednesday night as it signed off on the early design elements of a proposed six-story development planned to rise on the 600 block of Broadway E.

Wednesday, the board recommended the project move forward with its Master Use Permit application where the group’s attention will turn to elements including “scale mitigation, street edge composition and high-quality exterior materials.”

Studio Meng Strazzara is leading design on the Cascade Ridge Partners development and presented a set of three concepts for the general massing of the development including a preferred design that “continues the character of the Broadway E. corridor massing vernacular” with a U-shape concept. $410M price tag for downtown connector as First Hill Streetcar continues to stand alone

The Seattle 1st Ave streetcar plan now known as the Cultural Connector might be permanently stalled

With a new $410 million price tag for a long-planned connection to the line, it looks like the First Hill Streetcar will remain a stub.

When service first began in February 2016 on the 10-station route connecting Capitol Hill’s Broadway through the International District to Pioneer Square after a multi-year, $133 million construction project to complete the line, there were hopes of extensions of the trolley and bikeway up Broadway and, eventually, across downtown to connect with the South Lake Union line.

The Aloha extension plan was axed long ago. Now the 1st Ave connection seems to be doomed. Continue reading

The workers of Seattle public television KCTS and Crosscut are moving onto Broadway.

Cascade Public Media says it is in the process of opening its new First Hill headquarters at 316 Broadway. It acquired the building from Childhaven, a provider of therapeutic services for children who have experience trauma and neglect, for $23 million in 2022, according to King County Records.

The media nonprofit says employees of the public television station and Crosscut are now working in the newly reopened Broadway facility and that the organization is preparing the building’s “several large gathering spaces” to host KCTS and Crosscut events with the “potential to enable new types of community engagement” for the organization.

“The thing this building offers is a chance for us to reimagine the ways in which we interact with the community,” president and CEO Rob Dunlop said in the Crosscut story announcing the opening.

The future could also involve the use of the building for community events and gatherings, Cascade said. Meanwhile, there are other changes afoot including a plan for a massive sign marking the headquarters place in the city’s changing media landscape. That sign will likely help introduce a new brand — Cascade says it is in the midst of an effort to rename itself after decades in the city. Continue reading

  • UNICORN EXPANSION: It has been nearly four years since CHS reported on the 10-year anniversary of one-of-a-kind Pike/Pine circus bar the Unicorn. Included in that February, 2020 story were details of Adam Heimstadt and Kaileigh Wilson’s big top plans for a massive Unicorn expansion near West Seattle and White Center. And then COVID blew everything away. But Pike/Pine nightlife is back, baby, and word comes now that the Unicorn expansion is back in motion with hopes for a 2024 debut. Heimstadt and Wilson bought the 25,000 square foot property on 17 Ave SW in 2017 that is also home to a collection of local businesses that will remain in place. The new Unicorn sibling will be huge with a 64-foot long bar and plans for a teacup ride relocated from San Luis Obispo. Continue reading

One of the more colorful characters in Broadway food and drink is gone. Marco Casas Beaux, a creator of dining experiences across Seattle for decades, has died, his family of Capitol Hill businesses announced.

Monday, Broadway’s Boca Restobar and Grill and down-the-street Boca Pizzeria and Bakery remained closed to mark his passing. His Boca steakhouse in the old Queen City Grill was also shuttered in his honor after weekend service in his memory. They will reopen for business Tuesday.

“We will never know anyone like him. He was bigger than life and put everything into his work,” the announcement reads. “We ask that you remember his tenacity and the stories he told of a life well lived.” Continue reading
