Skater protest can’t stop removal of rogue ramp in Cal Anderson

Skateboarding is not a crime. But building a rogue cement ramp in a Seattle park is.

Police were called to the busy courts of Cal Anderson Wednesday morning to a report of a group hindering a Seattle Parks work crew trying to remove a rogue ramp installed on the basketball court on the park’s western edge.

A Parks representative tells CHS somebody was lying down on the ramp prompting the call to police.

Police arriving to the callout around 10:30 AM reported that things had worked themselves out. There were no arrests. Continue reading →

Grinding it out at Capitol Hill’s 35th North Skateshop

Tony Croghan has run 35th North at the corner of Pike and 11th since 2003. It’s a Capitol Hill institution and one of the only such shops in the city, hub for a generation-spanning pursuit that’s both sport and art. As the world of skateboarding prepares for its international debut in the Olympics in 2020, Croghan stays focused on the art and community it inspires.

“I think about a kid right now in middle school, an individual who might be artistic, who’s into music, but also likes to do activities and might be coordinated and athletic; that’s the skateboarder,” Croghan said. “If that kid is ever turned off by skating—‘That looks like a sport to me, I don’t wanna do it’—that would be a bad spot to be in.” Continue reading →

Capitol Hill’s 35th North sued by city over guerilla Duck Island skate bowl

Capitol Hill skateboard shop 35th North is being sued by the City of Seattle over the summer construction of a guerrilla skate park on an island in the middle of Green Lake.

City Attorney Peter Holmes announced the lawsuit Wednesday.

“As stewards of Seattle’s public parkland, we were saddened to see the misuse and destruction of Duck Island,” Parks Superintendent Jesús Aguirre said in a statement announcing the suit. “We are thankful to our partners in the City Attorney’s Office for seeking to hold those responsible accountable for damage created.”

The complaint from the Holmes office blames E Pike’s 35th North and 20 John/Jane Does for construction of a skateboard feature on the island this summer as part of a contest sponsored by Transworld Skateboarding Magazine. At one point, the Seattle project was named a winner in the Nike-sponsored contest but video of the project has since been removed from the magazine’s site.
