Surprise smoking violator on 15th Ave

Seattle PI has a list of county violators of the state smoking ban. We pick on Canterbury frequently but it didn’t make the naughty list. Instead, 22 Doors got dinged for allowing a smoker in its midst. But that’s not really the surprise. The other 15th Ave establishment to earn a nicotine demerit? Victrola. No ‘no smoking’ signs apparently. Go figure. Not really sure how the whole ‘violation’ thing goes down — we’re assuming a citizen needs to rat another citizen out. When the authorities arrive, they must mount an intense investigation (“Look for smoke.”) and then hunt around for other things to nail the establishment for like lack of signage. Looking at the list makes it pretty clear that it’s an arbitrary process — hence the mark against nightlife hotspot Downtown Emergency Service Center — so the headline on this piece probably ought to be something like Victrola = unlucky.

Yeah, I don’t think the Victrola folk were aware initially that they were legally responsible for non-customers smoking in front of the cafe. An upright citizen complained to the authorities first, instead of the owners. Now the staff has to go chase anyone away who’s smoking in the vicinity. Neat.
