The next generation of neighborhood blogging — West Sattle, Central District but, alas, not Capitol Hill

The next generation of neighborhood blogging gets some ink-stained attention from Seattle’s mainstream media. Barely containing his gee-whiz-osity, Danny Westneat documents the very cool thing that West Seattle Blog is building:

I’m not sure I can even call it news. It may be redefining what news is. Whatever it is, it’s taking off in popularity.

It’s the most thorough chronicling of what’s going on in a neighborhood I’ve ever seen.

Clearly, Danny has never visited Capitol Hill Seattle, before!

To tell the truth, what WSB has built is far beyond our modest efforts. We’re happy for Tracy and Patrick — it’s cool to see their effort turning into something so interesting that even a newspaper columnist can’t miss it. You can almost hear the poor guy pining for his own neighborhood blog. Go on, Danny, blogger or MyZip are only a click away.

West Seattle isn’t the only ‘hood with a next-generation hyper local news source — the good folks at Central District News are also building a site with round-the-clock, always-on news and info from the area. You can check out their latest feature here. We’ve added CDN and a few more area neighborhood blogs we’ve come across recently (hello, My Ballard, Rainier Valley Post and Wedgwood Blog!) to our sidebar neighborhood links. As for a hyper local, round-the-clock news source covering Capitol Hill, we’ll probably always come up a little short (but, hey, we’ve got message boards and important special events!) — so, if you have the news bug and a police scanner, there’s an opportunity for you. And, of course, we’d love to help you out.

He asked us about other neighborhood-news blogs in the area – we mentioned you, My Ballard, Central District News, and Exit 133, although the middle two have only been around a very short time. (But hey, you had your big P-I feature with a lovely picture and even a TV story too – didn’t somebody put you on tv, or am I hallucinating as usual?, months ago.) On a national level, we mentioned Baristanet – whose talented proprietress we were lucky to meet in person a few years ago – among others. Funny this is still considered novel, tho.

yes, this is kind of spammy, but it’s relevant spam (i don’t remember if i sent a link your way). you might want to check out yourstreet.com, a hyperlocal news site. the spammy part is that i helped build it (in our part of capitol hill even).

Yes, WS, we got the whole msm treatment, also. Ours was 100% gee whiz which is appropriate, i think :)
