Old Jack in the Box becomes temporary art gallery

In addition to new details of how the Capitol Hill light rail station construction will play out, Sound Transit also updated the Capitol Hill Community Council on the status of Mike Ross’s jet art designs. ST says the plans are still moving forward but they continue to collect feedback — and they had an interesting announcement regarding incorporating art into some of the business spaces left empty during the light rail construction process.

  • ST continues to gather feedback about Mike Ross’s work. ST said that majority of comments received to-date have been in support of the jet designs. The most effective way to be heard, ST said, is to take time to write a letter. Contact info here.
  • They also announced a plan to incorporate art installations into nine or ten of the businesses left empty as they await demolition — including the old Broadway Jack in the Box. To have your work considered, contact [email protected]
  • At this time, ST isn’t planning to make any of the empty spaces available for community events but would be open to the possibility if presented with a workable plan.

Twice Sold Tales had to move, but I can display my art and have a community event there because it’s going to be standing for a year? I love bureaucracy.

Not sure why ST needs things to be empty for so long before they dig. Assuming it’s a logistical thing that gives them buffer in negotiations/discussions/force d moves. You don’t want to be talking about moving a local business once the dirtmovers are warmed up and started.

They need time to assess contamination/hazard issues in the buildings and to put the needed cleanup work out to public bid (etc). Necessary government bureaucracy.

We’re annoyed that they have to jump through such hoops, but would be equally annoyed if they didn’t!

(not a mindreader: I asked them at the East Precinct Crime Prevention meeting).

Also asked about public use of buildings: they seemed quite negative then, so must be softening….

is going to be putting up a mural at the Jack in the Box location. It was announced at the forum that was held a few weeks ago.
