The skateboarding economy must be doing alright. The Seattle Times has a brief up about a new Stussy brand clothing store opening up on lower Pike just above downtown:
Stussy opens clothing shop on Capitol Hill

Capitol Hill is losing Bailey/Coy Books and gaining Stussy, a California-based streetwear retailer that’s been around almost 30 years, but new to Seattle.
Stussy (pronounced “Stoosy”) opens at 11 a.m. Friday at 1108 Pike St., next to Goods skate store and boutique. Goods owner Scott Downing is part of the new Stussy venture, which will feature men’s, women’s and children’s clothing and accessories.
Thank goodness for that pronunciation help. Meanwhile, back up on top of the Hill, Pike also sports 35th North Skate Shop (check it out — a Black Friday sale to add to our CHS holiday sale post) and Throwbacks NW for anybody looking to put a little street in their wardrobe.
Losing a book store and gaining “streetwear”? Where do adults go to live in Seattle?
I look at it more as allowing the children to subsidize our existence. More pricey street clothes, please.
Actually GOODS had a adult clients, particularly since they expanded some of their clothing beyond Ts and Evisu jeans a couple years ago. You would be surprised, and perhaps should pop in. Also, a lot of adults in this town skateboard (You may remember the staunch continuing support for the skatepark near seattle ctr) and seattle is proud home to a couple of companies, run by adults that design skateboard parks. I think your real question and its a valid one, is why is there not a version (cheaper or not) of Ballard’s Blackbird and its women’s boutique, on Cap Hill?
Replacing a beloved bookstore with a store selling overpriced, ugly ass, hipster-doofus, skateboard shit…can’t wait until my first sighting of a 38 year old, balding webdesigner tooling around on the Hill is his new Püssy outfit…
@stone: Ian used to be on the hill in the Area 51 space, but couldn’t last there. See also Zebra Club.
The Stussy store might be good. I really like the SF one.
How does your brain work? Stussy isn’t replacing Bailey Coy–BC would be going out of business whether Stussy opened or not.
I’ve never understood the chronic, incessant negativity of poster to anything new in this city.
One closed another business opened and why is that bad thing. If you don’t like what they sell then don’t buy anything, but crying about it not being what you want and only for hipsters is pathetic. You would rather it be empty and the space fail to bring in more tax money to our city in a time of struggle? Think before you talk next time. Its not all about you. Its not even the same building or area of Capitol Hill.
Nigga book stores on cap hill are for straight hipsters wtf are you talkin bout stussy now this is gon be on some hype beast shyt theres a difference.(which aint bad)
While I’ll agree my word choice was inelegant and clunky, I meant that in the general sense NOT specifically…
Positive change.
And retail that sells fashionable clothes at realistic prices that anyone can wear.

Portland has a store…we should, too.
Sadly, Capitol Hill is more likely to get an Ed Hardy store (shudder).
wait, its not replacing a book store, its replacing the skate store of Goods. If you go to Goods like me then you would of notice that, the seattle times got it wrong. so no need to complain about a book store going out of business.
