What do you resolve, Capitol Hill?

It’s the end of another year. That went fast, didn’t it. They go quicker from here. Enjoy yourself. It’s later than you think.

So, let’s march into 2010 with resolutions for improvement and, yes, enjoyment.

CHS has two resolutions:

  1. Take more pictures in 2010.
  2. Not wait all year to get our shoes resoled. That new leather makes every step better.

How about you?

Shop from locally owned businesses on Capitol Hill whenever possible (which is almost all the time).

1) To adopt conscious eating habits (Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.)

2) To engage in community service– preferably on Capitol Hill.

3.) To explore why Capitol Hill does not have a huge Pride Flag like the Castro and find out if there is interest in doing that. As gays move outward into the community I believe this heritage not be lost. We are freakout when an old building is torn down. How about preserving an overall identity and spirit?

3.) To be a better person by practicing The Paradoxical Commandments:

People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
Love them anyway.
If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.
If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.
The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.
Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway.
The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds.
Think big anyway.
People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs.
Fight for a few underdogs anyway.
What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.
People really need help but may attack you if you do help them.
Help people anyway.
Give the world the best you have and you’ll get kicked in the teeth.
Give the world the best you have anyway.

Best resolutions inspire others — so these are good!

I think 3) is a cool idea. Trying to envision the most prominent place in the meantime, but maybe the 2016 light rail station should have a flag pole on top (as long as we can make sure it doesn’t get used for Space Needle style promotions)

Identities evolve. Maybe you could let it change. Change is good.

Maybe we could have a list of local shoemakers? I’m partial to the guys in the Harvard Market (Broadway and Roy) myself, but there are likely others and it would be good to know where they are.

Amidst a barrage of New Year’s platitudes about changing the world and one’s whole way of being in it (which will likely be forgotten in a month or so), I have decided to do something small but important: play an active role in making just one kid a critical thinker.

If anyone would like to offer suggestions on how best to do that, please fire away. I have my own thoughts, but would love to hear what others think.

One of the school programs where you meet with a student for an hour a week to read to be read to would give you that oppotunity. Big Brothers/Big Sisters would be another option.

Pilgrim Church often has a big flag … remember there is going to be a Pride focus street fair on north Bwy. – continued from last year, which turned out to be a lot of fun and a very pleasant couple of hours.

I really support re inventing some gay themes on the Hill. It is still where tons of LGBT people live and work. And, why is that going back in time? We all know things change, but that is no reason to become invisible. It is Seattle, right? Dozens of communities represent themselves with fairs, centers, art/culture, social projects and visibility. Why pretend other is better for LGBT folks?

Mike with a bad hangover – what a party at Oddfellows to benefit the AIDS Foundation – Great job, wonder space, top floor (4th) just renovated and retrofitted to new quake standards.

I LOVE this idea. The mentor thing is real. Bright kids like cool adults, and often, they are not near in family or ordinary circles of interaction.

I had cool mom and dad and tons of smart/caring adults around me all my childhood. Lucky.

Great idea, can only do good, and who knows what brilliance or just happiness you might help unlock?

ABSOLUTELY – A must to keep C. Hill vital and thriving. Bailey Coy might have been able to keep on trucking if all book buyers in a five mile circle bought only there.

ABSOLUTELY – So resolved here as well!!!!
