SeattleCrime: Broadway Market QFC plagued by shoplifters

Only one QFC employee’s opinion, but this SeattleCrime brief on yet another QFC shoplifter caught in the act seems to put words to the anecdotal evidence we’ve seen that the store gets more than its fair share of freeloaders:

“QFC has been victim of more frequent shoplifts as of late,” the QFC employee later told officers, adding that “shoplift suspects are becoming more bold.”

One possible quibble in the ‘more frequent’ choice of language, though. Can’t recall a time when we didn’t see QFC shoplifters in the SPD reports. Here’s a search on past CHS posts including the terms QFC + shoplift.

When Deano’s/Club Chocolate City was in operation, the 23rd & Madision Safeway had a very high loss rate: ~ 7 x typical rate, according to the Safeway security official who regularly attended our neighborhood cleanups. High value items were the most popular: makeup and big hunks of meat.

Owner of the auto body shop next door reported a regular procession of people knocking on their door offering to sell meat, still in Safeway packaging.

There was also a (never substantiated) rumor that the kitchen at Club Chocolate City would prepare your recently liberated meat for you. Seems unlikely if Miss Helen (of Miss Helen’s Soul Food) was on the premises.

It comes full circle though. Every time I go into QFC for food I feel like Im the one getting ripped off. I miss Safeway…

Usually it’s the crackheads and street kids. They really are obvious!

What’s even worse is when the street kids bring in their dogs. These are NOT service dogs.

Three days ago I noticed a hippie with a dog in the store and the dog jumped up on the deli case and began to lick it. I gave a nasty look to the hippie, who of course, did not care. I told the cashier but she said sadly, that the store couldn’t do anything about it. I said that they could at least tell him his dog can’t jump up on the food and lick it!!! REALLY NOW!?!

Yup. I think it’s slightly more the crusties and rail-riders than the crackheads, but I totally agree.

True-dat Maus! I guess I just like the ring of “crackhead” but I think I like “crusties” even better!

This store has so many entrances it’s probably a shoplifters dream. But something should be done since the loss get’s passed on in higher prices.

…they should ban any staff from The Stranger from entering the store.
