Reminder: Sound Transit-funded business seminars starting

Monday night is the kick-off session for a series of seminars being provided by Sound Transit and the Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce to help give the Hill’s small business owners a boost during trying economic times and disruptions caused by construction of the Broadway light rail station. You can register for the sessions at tonight’s meeting at Seattle Central or contact Jennifer Lemus, Community Outreach Specialist with Sound Transit  at 206.398.5314 or [email protected]. Retailing sessions begin this week, with restaurant workshops and a session on social media tools including Twitter to follow later in the month and into May.

We spoke with consultant Tom Shay who will be leading the retail portion of the seminars. Shay told CHS the seminars are the kind of thing a small business owner needs to make time for. “If you don’t take time for this, what are you doing to get better at running your business?”

We also asked him about any special advice he might have for businesses in the area being impacted by the light rail construction. “Any business has to take their own effort to drive traffic to their business,” Shay said. “This is really your task.”

Having attended these seminars last go-round I can tell you there’s a lot of very good information to be had – for free. I know it’s hard or small business people to get to outside events sometimes but try and get to one of these – you won’t be sorry. These kind of retail experts cost a bundle in the real world – so the fact that Sound Transit is picking up the tab is great!

I promise you – it’s worth the time investment.
