Cafe Juanita’s Holly Smith to open Pike/Pine brewpub

Renowned Chef Holly Smith, winner of the 2008 James Beard Award for Best Chef in the Northwest for her work at Cafe Juanita, will be leasing the ground floor 1000 East Pike space recently vacated by Hunters Capital (which owns the entire building).  Sources close to both Smith and Hunters Capital alerted us to this development.   We contacted Lissa Gruman, who handles public relations for Smith, and she replied with the following: “I spoke with Holly and at this point there is no deal, so cannot confirm this is really going to happen.”  CHS sources, however, state that this is “Smith’s new space”.  As we previously reported, an insider close to Hunter’s Capital revealed that this will be the site of a brewpub.

A brewpub, as in she will also be making beer on the premise? With her name I imagine she could get someone pretty awesome as brew master.

Not a person from the suburbs opening a business on Capitol Hill. Can they legally do this?

i holehartedly agree!! our community has been coopted by the bouregeousie from kirkland, bellevue, issaquah who just want to profit off of the Hill while stealing what makes it REAL! we do not want another cookie-cutter “pub” from someone who does not understand what makes our community sustainable and livable. we have seen too many of these establishments in the trace lofts building and through out the rest of the Hill, overpriced and catering only to bros and hos in backwards hats who run down us bikers in their BMWs every chance they get. of course you dont see any DUI patrols in this area because the police want the rich people to replace the ‘unsavery element’ that the government considers the Hill to be. this is DISGUSTING!

vegetarian options? There is a distinct and noticable bias against nonmeats in this article. Something must be done!

Only up scale booze and food places can afford the rents.
No bad exactly, but if you live here, not a big thrill.

Called market driven. Aside from hiring a few local folks, they have no connection to the community at all.

The food at Barrio is OK, but the mood of the place is straight out of the Bellevue play book.

So it is ok for a biz from Pioneer Sq to move here, but not a chef from Kirkland? That makes absolutely no sense. Honestly, I have seen more old people in Pike/Pine than I ever have before (since EBBC opened) and this is a good thing, since it is essentially bringing new commerce to the neighborhood. All of these people are new customers that will spend MONEY here, thereby supporting local workers, creating jobs and bringing more people to the street. Holly Smith is a nationally award winning chef – we should be proud that she wants to locate on Capitol Hill, especially at a time when the neighborhood is struggling with Light Rail redevelopment.

I’ve only eaten at Cafe Juanita once and the food was amazing! I’ll welcome a James Beard Award winning chef to my hood any day of the week. We’re very lucky to be getting Holly Smith. Welcome!

unbelievable! how many bars can they put on the head of a pin! Saturday and Sunday mornings in my neighborhood (11th & Pike) are just gross. Bar owners! Clean up after yourselves!
