E. Olive mugging nets crooks an empty wallet

It looks like our assessment that May’s street robbery totals should come in below what was a busy March for Capitol Hill area muggers and stick-up artists might have been premature. On Tuesday, we reported an early morning street robbery on E. Pike and found a police report for an attempted armed robbery earlier this month on E. Thomas. Now we’ve learned of another attempted street robbery this weekend on E. Olive. The only reason the crime wasn’t successful — the victim had nothing left in his wallet.

According to the SPD report on the incident, a man told police he was walking uphill when he was approached by three men near E. Olive St. and 15th Ave around 1:50 AM on Saturday, May 22. One of three asked the man for a cigarette and a light. He then asked the man what he was doing in the area and began reaching into the victim’s pockets as the other two men stood by. The victim told police he believed that the second man possibly had a gun. The first man pulled the victim’s wallet out but was frustrated to find it was empty and threw it to the ground. With nothing of value to steal, the men left the victim at the scene and did not injure him, according to the report. The man told police he could identify the men if he saw them again. No suspect descriptions were provided in the report.
