Pride on Capitol Hill adds new fun: Pride Picnic complete with SOaP box derby

Don’t look now — but next week is June. With Seattle Pride right around the corner, CHS wants to make sure you plan ahead for a new part of the celebration on Capitol Hill. 2010 marks the debut of the family focused Pride Picnic, Sunday, June 13 in Volunteer Park. Here are some details from the plans for the first-year event from Seattle Gay News:

The Seattle Pride Picnic is scheduled at Volunteer Park on June 13. SOaP officials say that everyone is welcome, and kids between 7 and 11 years old will enjoy a Soap Box Car installation.

CHS talked with SOaP’s Jeffrey Campbell to learn more about the inaugural picnic. “It’s going to be a really big deal,” Campbell said.” For one, in addition to the family fun theme, there’s going to be cheap food. Whole Foods has stepped up to sponsor a spread of hamburgers, veggie burgers, hot dogs, veggie dogs, salad, fruit and more — anybody who shows up, eats for $1.

For two, there are going to be honest-to-goodness soap box derby cars to race on the back loop of Volunteer Park.

“We’ll need a few kids for the cars,” Campbell said. We’re thinking that won’t be a problem judging by the number of scooters and Spiderman bike helmets we see around Capitol Hill streets this spring.

The picnic will also include a DJ, of course, plus organizers are hoping for appearances from musical groups appearing in the big Pride parade later in June like the Rainbow City Band. Campbell said organizers are also working on bringing out the dignitaries for the event with state Senator Ed Murray and Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn on the “likely to attend” list.

Campbell also wanted to make sure CHS mentioned the event’s main sponsor, BECU. The credit union bravely stepped up in year one of what could be a fun new event for Capitol Hill’s Pride.
