Credit union celebrates 75 years with Lifelong donations, handing out cash on Broadway

BECU — formerly known as Boeing Employee Credit Union — is holding a promotion on Tuesday that we’re not so sure about. The Lifelong AIDS Alliance donation for every account opened at their BECU branch in the Broadway Market? Very nice! But ‘hitting the street’ on Broadway to hand out $1 bills? That should be interesting. Thankfully, no laws about aggressive panhandling in the city. Yet.

Tuesday, June 8: Broadway & Capitol Hill, 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM. BECU will be hitting the street to hand out dollar bills! Lifelong AIDS Alliance will be on-site, and $25 will be donated to the organization for each new account opened.

BECU celebrates its 75th Anniversary with a week of events and giveaways in Seattle and the Central Sound

After a week of events in the South Sound, BECU will continue its 75th Anniversary celebration with  four days of events in the Seattle area and Kitsap Peninsula June 8-11. These events will feature free food and dollar giveaways for community members, as well as charitable donations for each new account opened.

Founded in 1935, BECU was created by 18 Boeing employees hoping to pool their resources to help one another buy tools they needed on the job. 75 years later, BECU has grown from 18 members and $9, to Washington’s largest credit union with over 600,000 members.

Credit unions are not-for-profit, which allows them to return earnings to their members through lower fees and better rates.

In addition to free food, beverages and dollar giveaways, community members can enter to win a new Apple iPad at BECU’s 75th anniversary events.

Event details:

  • Tuesday, June 8: Broadway & Capitol Hill, 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM. BECU will be hitting the street to hand out dollar bills! Lifelong AIDS Alliance will be on-site, and $25 will be donated to the organization for each new account opened.
  • Wednesday, June 9: Westlake Park 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM. Lunch is on BECU! Attendees will receive free hot dogs, soda, and Tully’s Coffee. For each new account opened, $25 will be donated to Lifelong AIDS Alliance.
  • Thursday, June 10: Northgate Mall 2:00 PM – 7:00 PM. BECU puts money back in your wallet! Stop by to pick up your dollar bill. For each new account opened, $25 will be donated to Lifelong AIDS Alliance.
  • Friday, June 11: Kitsap Mall 2:00 PM – 7:00 PM. BECU celebrates the last day of the tour with free food and other offers from local vendors. For each new account opened, BECU will donate $25 to Northwest Burn Foundation through Thunderbird Rodeo.

Switching from Bank Robbers of America to BECU was the best investment I’ve made.

I just hope they don’t get too big and turn into a regular crooked bank.

I believe they are saying that when they first started the members had a pool of $9 between them to buy the needed tools.

I will be there! Been thinking of going with a credit union for a while now… so now I have a good reason – way to go BECU for all the support for Lifelong!

I have been with BECU since I was 17 years old (it helps that my dad works at Boeing and he opened the acccount) and I will stay with them for the rest of my life, barring crazy banking antics. That’s almost 10 years now, and I couldn’t be happier with the service and convenience I receive from my interactions with them. If anyone is thinking about making a switch to BECU, I highly recommend them.

You will not regret it. BECU is wonderful, as anyone who banks with them will tell you. There’s nothing a bank can do that they can’t do, better and cheaper. You’ll be glad you did.
