Sound Transit construction update: new crosswalk on E. Denny, ‘Watch for Trucks’ campaign

Sound Transit’s July is all about pedestrian safety on the sidewalks and streets surrounding the Broadway light rail construction site as truck traffic increases in the area. The agency is mounting a marketing campaign — what’s this about newspapers, guys? — and also working with the Seattle Department of Transportation to increase safety in the area by adding a new crosswalk on the north side of Cal Anderson Park. The intersection of 10th and E. Denny might not be the busiest pedestrian crossing but the crowded street could use some help to become a little friendlier for those on their feet. Details on that project and more updates from Sound Transit’s latest construction bulletin, below.

Pedestrian Safety Campaign
Sound Transit has begun a Pedestrian Safety Campaign on Capitol Hill. Truck traffic from the construction site is about to increase in early July – especially along the haul routes of Olive Way & Denny Way. You’ll soon begin seeing ads in local newspapers encouraging pedestrians to “Stay safe and sound around light rail construction.”

New Crosswalk at 10th and Denny
Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) will install a new crosswalk on the east side of the corner of 10th Avenue and Denny Way to improve pedestrian crossing options near the construction of the Capitol Hill Link light rail station. SDOT hopes to have the new crosswalk in place by early July 2010.

Capitol Hill Station Construction Status

• Jet grouting is now complete on the north end of the site, and the equipment is being permanently removed. Jet grouting helps stabilize the soil by injecting cement grout under high pressure.

• The utility work that is underway in the intersection of 10th Avenue and Denny Way is expected to be completed by July 6.

• Once the utility work in 10th and Denny is complete, the final gate in the construction fence can be installed at that intersection.

First Artwork on Capitol Hill Construction Wall
The STart Wall Project officially kicked off during the June 10 Arts Blitz with a musical performance by The Toy Boats and an installation by Phong Le titled “Vindauga (eye of the wind).” More installations, murals and a community memorial wall will begin taking shape over the summer, including works by Evan Blackwell, Tim Marsden, Gretchen Bennett, Joey Veltkamp and more. The STart Wall Project, curated by D.K. Pan, is a multi-year art lab that will help keep the neighborhood surrounding the station construction site active and vibrant.

UW Station Construction Status

• Excavation of the station has begun. Over the next month the contractor will deliver five crawler cranes, 27 water storage tanks and a de-sanding plant to assist in the excavation

• Preparations for jet grouting have started at the north end of the construction site. Jet grouting, which will stabilize the soil, is scheduled to start towards the end of July 2010.

45th Street Viaduct Project
The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) has started construction to replace the west approach of the NE 45th Street viaduct. During construction the viaduct will be closed and traffic detoured. The viaduct is scheduled to open again on September 10. For more information about the NE 45th Street Viaduct closure, please visit www.seattle.gov/transportation/45th-bridge.htm or e-mail [email protected].

What is University Link?
University Link is the 3.15-mile extension of light rail from downtown Seattle to the University of Washington. U-Link includes twin-bore tunnels and two stations, one at Capitol Hill (Broadway and East John Street) and the other on the University of Washington campus near Husky Stadium. Local tax funding for U-Link was approved by voters and the project also received an $813 million Federal Transit Administration grant.

U-Link is projected to add 70,000 daily riders to the Link system, bringing total daily ridership to 114,000 in 2030. Construction of U-Link began in early 2009 and will continue over the next six years. Passenger service is scheduled to begin in 2016.

How wonderful that they’re putting a new cross walk on our street…right next to the barricade closing that corner for through traffic till summer of 2016. Glad they’re on top of this!

haha – I was thinking the same thing. What IS needed is a crosswalk at John and 10th!! And while we’re at it – how about some left turn arrows at the lights on John and Broadway. This whole area is a mess!

Nice shiny new crosswalk appeared at 15th and highland, much needed as it’s a fairly busy path into the park. Not sure, but Prospect may have received one too.

Can we slow down just a bit? This is a critical corner for many important reasons: maximum pedestrian safety, park access and circulation issues, historic park connections, design considerations, future street needs, adjacent street trees, etc. Red tinted concrete pavers are not the answer.

I thought the same thing and then I read the release in which I saw this:

The utility work that is underway in the intersection of 10th Avenue and Denny Way is expected to be completed by July 6.

• Once the utility work in 10th and Denny is complete, the final gate in the construction fence can be installed at that intersection.

So maybe the intersection opens again and is even the primary entrance and exit for the site? I walk through there daily and hope that’s not the case but I guess infrastructure upgrades come at a price.
