Blotter: Assault with metal pipe, theater break-in and attempted bank robbery

Today has been slow on Seattle Crime’s live map, but here’s what else has been happening in the East Precinct this week.

  • Assault with metal pipe: A male victim reported being assaulted in the lobby of a storage facility on the 1100 block of Madison Street August 23. The victim told police that he was first punched by the suspect, who then pulled out a pipe and tried to beat the victim with it but the victim shielded his face. Only his left hand was struck by the pipe but he said he was hit and kicked several more times before the suspected attacker fled the scene.
  • Musical burglary: A basement used as a practice studio for several local bands was burglarized sometime between 7 p.m. August 19 and 7 p.m. August 20. Band members returned to the basement on August 20 to find musical instruments and accessories missing from the space on East Thomas Street. The officer on the scene could find no evidence of forced entry and said “it was implausible to attempt fingerprinting due to the number of persons with legitimate access to the basement.”

  • Hungry burglar: A restaurant on the 600 block of Broadway was broken into the night of August 17. The caller, who is the partner of the victim, reported some bottles of liquor were stolen from the business and drawers have been rifled through. At the time the officer responded, it was not known if more was stolen from the restaurant because the victim was in school and away from the property. The caller told the officer that the front door key was missing and it may have been used to assist the thief. There was no evidence of forced entry.
  • Theater forced entry: Sometime between August 19 and the evening of August 22, the rear door of a 19th Avenue theater was pried open. There appeared to be nothing stolen but drawers had been looked through and a lock in the theater’s administrative office had been broken.
  • Attempted bank robbery: A Broadway bank teller was helping a regular customer August 13 when he told her he had to tell her something but knew he would get in trouble if he did. The suspect then leaned forward and asked the teller to empty her till but quickly said he was joking. He repeated the request a moment later. The teller told the customer that was not something you say at a bank. He then left the bank on foot.

Though these last three events occurred off the Hill, we thought they were worth mentioning because of their proximity to the neighborhood as well as their severity.

  • Drive-by theft: August 23 on the downtown side of I-5, a woman driving a white Honda or Hyundai with a male passenger asked the male victim if he could spare a couple dollars for gas, the victim said he could and proceeded to pull more than $100 out of his wallet, looking for one dollar bills. The male passenger then snatched the victim’s cash and phone from his hand and drove away.
  • Arboretum robbery: Seattle Crime reported earlier this week that a man called police on the night of August 21 to report he had been robbed while walking in the arboretum. He was approached by a black male who proceeded to put his arm around the victim’s neck and take both his wallet and cell phone. The victim said he asked for assistance from other park-goers but no one was willing to call the police for him so he contact SPD from his home.
  • Armed phone theft: The victim was walking home from church on the 600 block of Pine Street on First Hill when a man approached him, shoved a gun into his stomach and demanded the victim surrender his iPhone. The victim was unable to describe the gun and told police he wasn’t sure if he would be able to identify the suspect.
