Man arrested for East Olive shopping cart robbery

After a summer that saw more street robberies than normal around Capitol Hill, things have been a little more settled recently. An incident late Monday night will add to the street robbery totals — but probably won’t be as unsettling as many of the other muggings.

Seattle police responded to the area between City Market and the Crescent late Monday night for a report of an altercation between two men fighting over a shopping cart. When one man struck the other, police decided they’d had enough of the argument and placed the man under arrest for investigation of robbery. He was booked into King County Jail.

Before you think this is only one of those blotter posts where we turn the hardships of others into a funny ha ha, here’s another recent reported robbery incident from the streets of Capitol Hill. In the incident, a 49-year-old male was found on 10th Ave around 1:30 AM disoriented and with a bloodied face. Staff from nearby businesses said they believed the man was a transient. The man told police he had been beaten and robbed. He was treated by medics for abrasions to the face and contusions suffered in the beating.

The incidents bring October’s total reported street robberies to three. We have averaged about 10 reported incidents in recent months.

Meanwhile, some neighbors are starting to organize a Capitol Hill block watch group and have a survey for you to fill out if you are interested in helping out. Incidents like the 10th Ave one are a reminder that a safety effort like a block watch has even more value if it can help make the streets safe for everybody.
