Movie shoot takes over Bauhaus Saturday night

It’s not too rare to see somebody shooting a student film on the streets of Capitol Hill. Lately, we’ve seen a few (slightly) larger productions on the Hill, too. Saturday night, Bauhaus Coffee will go into film production mode as the cast and crew of Nothing Against Life will be shooting overnight.

According to the media release below, they’ll be filming in the area through the month so you’ll probably see a camera crew on the Hill again a few times.

Paradigma Productions, a collective of independent artists and filmmakers, is pleased to announce the start of production for the film Nothing Against Life.

Written, directed and produced by Seattle-based Julio Ramirez, the drama peers into the lives of four strangers as they cross paths during what may be their final days before committing suicide. Director of Photography and Co-Producer Carl Adelson has also been a key player in the production, enlisting his many talents and cinematic eye towards the endeavor.

With an expected release in 2011, the film is fast generating buzz on account of its award-winning cast. For an emerging filmmaker the lineup is unprecedented, combining international star wattage with a serious dramatic pedigree.

Cast in the lead is Northern Exposure icon Cynthia Geary, well known for her role in the acclaimed sitcom (she was also nominated for 2 Emmys and a Screen Actors Guild Award). As Barbara, an attractive Seattle housewife who struggles with ennui and depression, Geary relishes the mid-career opportunity. “Ramirez’s film has come along at the perfect time in my life,” says Geary. “Barbara is a wonderful, complex, and challenging character. I’m ready for her and to go back to work full time.”

Alongside Geary stars Fernando Noriega—already a household name in Latin America with a rising profile stateside. (Credits include Amor en Custodia, Where The Road Meets The Sun, and Morir en Martes, a drama based on David Lynch’s Twin Peaks.) Says Ramirez, “Noriega’s charisma and vulnerability are ideal for the portrayal of Felipe, a young South American writer who is researching the subject of suicide.”

Leading protagonists are rounded out by up-and-coming actors Hillary Pickles (Police Beat, Book-It Repertory Theatre’s world premier of Even Cowgirls Get the Blues) and Keifer Grimm (Cthulhu, The Summer Before).

Nothing Against Life’s rich, compelling storyline unfolds in Seattle, a city with one of the highest suicide rates in the country. This has undoubtedly contributed to the project’s deep wellspring of support from within the community. “The whole city has come together to make this work, and it’s been extremely inspiring,” claims the director.

Originally hailing from Colombia, Ramirez now works full time in the film industry, producing narrative film shorts and commercial video as well as documentaries for the non-profit sector.

Nothing Against Life has been a labor-of-love for many involved, and is blessed with resources that far exceed its lean budget. A remarkable group of talented artists and filmmakers have come together to work in a truly collaborative and creative process.

Filming is slated to start on October 5th and will last until October 29th.
