Big openings coming soon on 12th Ave: Eltana bagels this week, High 5 Pie last day!3{2}of ’10

12th Avenue is about to get a whole lot yummier. According to co-founder Stephen Brown, Eltana Wood-Fire Bagel Cafe will have a “very” soft opening this Friday, December 17th. Two weeks later and a short waddle down the block, the long-awaited High 5 pie shop opens for business in the Trace building. Information on High 5’s final-day of 2010 opening is below.

Brown described Etlana to CHS as a middle eastern eatery that will serve wood-fired baked bagels known as “Montreal bagels” in 12th Ave’s Packard Building. Next door, Italian lounge Varro is also expected to open soon.

Montreal bagels are smaller, sweeter and coated with either sesame or poppy seeds all over the bagel.  A wood-fired stove will sit in the center of the space, so customers can view the bagels as they come out of the oven. Brown is a restaurant veteran having helmed Entros in South Lake Union from 1993 to 2000.  Before that, he operated an oyster bar in Palo Alto.

Meanwhile, we’ve been following the High 5 story since September 2009 when Fuel Coffee entrepreneur Dani Cone first announced her plans and started her search for investors to back the shop. This summer, we wrote about the plan to open the new shop at the intersection of 12th, Union and Madison. “The way Pike/Pine and 12th have taken off, it’s kind of like one stop shopping,” Cone said at the time. “It’s like dessert row. You’ve got a trillion choices. It’s all there for you.”

High 5’s neighbor, fitness studio Barre3, has already opened in the new retail spaces at the location. Later in 2011, self-serve dog wash Rex will join the party.

Here’s the details on High 5’s big launch:

High 5 Pies have been available at Fuel Coffee Shops and other cafes. Now fans will be able to enjoy Flipsides, Cutie Pies and other handmade treats at the source when the High 5 Pie Shop opens in December. In addition to serving High 5 classics of sweet and savory Cutie Pies, Piejars, Flipsides, deep-dish pies and Piepops, there will be some new items. With the help of Cakespy’s Jessie Oleson and consultant Kate Lebo, High 5 Pie will introduce Petit-5s, pies by the slice, cookies (including a gluten-free option), vegan quick breads, buttermilk biscuits and breakfast Flipsides. For a full menu visit High 5 Pie’s blog.

The 2,100-square-foot bakery and café will feature seating for 20 customers along the counter and handcrafted pie-shaped butcher block table. The floor-to-ceiling windows highlight the clean, simple and well-crafted materials of the café.

I tried them yesterday, and overall, give them a “meh”.

I understand that they just opened, but they were a mess. It took about 8 minutes for them to give me 2 sesame bagels with cream cheese and 2 plain bagels.

The bagel itself was pretty tasteless, as in there was no salt. It tasted like a dough ball. The texture and consistency was nice, but it has to taste like something.

The time (~10 minutes) to deliver and the cost (~$8) seems a bit steep to me.

(They also didn’t have any onion or caper to add to the bagel- which it needed, since it was so tasteless.)

I would stop in again for a cheep bite if I were standing right there, but would not go a block out of my way.

Holy crap.. I miss Entros. I will have to give these bagels a try.

So I have since tried them again and have found that a pinch of missing salt has been added. Not so shabby – always good to try and try again.

No longer an overall “meh”, more like “not so bad at all”.
