SeattleCrime: Noise dispute leads to hatchet assault near Seattle U

One man was arrested early last Friday morning after he allegedly struck another with the blunt side of a hatchet in a dispute over late night noise near 13th and East Columbia. SeattleCrime has the details:

At about 12:45am on December 17th, a group of friends were walking home from a bar near 13th and E Columbia when they heard a man yell “shut the fuck up” from a nearby apartment

The suspect then came out of the apartment holding a hatchet, and a “buck knife,” according to one of the group members, who also told police the suspect tried to sic his dog on them.

SeattleCrime goes on to document the man’s assertion that he was acting in self-defense.

With last month’s hatchet murder at 15th and Union, we’re fine with no more hatchet headlines in 2010, thanks.

I’m looking to purchase a crowd control hatchet and why didn’t the brand get reported like the knife’s brand did? 1/2 of a story. Hurrumphh!

‘The man told police he heard “people outside of his apartment building arguing possibly even fighting” and heard someone say “I’m going to kill you.”

The man armed himself with a hatchet to go break up the fight.

When he went outside, the suspect saw the victim run towards him, and struck him in the head with the hatchet, apparently to defend himself.
Police reviewed footage from security cameras at nearby Seattle University, which showed there was a large brawl in the street at 13th and Columbia just before the suspect confronted the victim.’

‘The report say the victim and his friends were uncooperative when officers questioned them about the incident.’

When I read your summary, it sounded like the group was a happy-go-lucky bunch of santas elves. When I read what you didn’t bing up here, which I’ve pasted above, it sounds like those guys were covering their asses with their story to the cops.

Because a hatchet is a type of ax. A buck knife is a type of knife. It probably is in quotes because that is how it was worded by a witness.

This reminds me of the car that TJ Hookered the cyclist last week…clearly, neither a car nor an axe should be used for any purpose other than it’s intended, but in both cases, the crazy (or at least ill-advised) actions were escalations brought on by typical Hill assholery (loud drunks at 2am, inconsiderate cycling). So let’s review: be careful around people with cars or axes if you don’t have one, and can we also all please try to not be assholes? Thanks, and happy holidays.

Thanks “…” for the very informative comment. The remainder of the SeattleCrime report casts the confrontation in an entirely new light.

T-Birds and hatchets — while effective — are clearly not the weapons of choice against “typical Hill assholery.” Let’s put our heads together and come up with some creative alternatives.
