Man arrested for pulling knife at QFC, woman robbed at knifepoint on First Hill

Two armed robbery attempts in the area over the weekend involved knives as the weapon of choice. There were no significant injuries in either incident. Details on incidents, below.

First, Saturday night, police arrested a man for pulling a knife on QFC employees during a robbery attempt inside the Harvard Market store. After a struggle with store security, the man tried to toss the knife down a grocery aisle but the weapon was recovered and the man was arrested when police arrived.

Sunday morning, a woman walking in the 1300 block of Spring Street was held up at knifepoint by a man who demanded her bag and then fled the area on foot. The man in the 9:35 AM incident was described as a white male in his 20s, about 6 feet tall and with light colored facial hair. He was wearing a grey hoodie at the time of the incident and was last seen heading east on Madison. The woman was not injured in the mugging.

We recently reported that December had been a relatively quiet period for street robberies but the First Hill area has had some singular incidents of note including this flat tire ruse hold-up and a peculiar home invasion robbery that left two men handcuffed together on the street on Boren.

It seems like the Harvard Market QFC is a site of regular incidents involving weapons and violence. Why?…is that area significantly different than, say, the Broadway Market QFC?

I for one would not shop there. Too risky.

QFC, or rather the parent company, Kroger, for some reason refuses to hire enough security.

And, you’re probably fine. It’s us employees that always end up on the receiving end of the violence. You’d probably end up with a gift card if you complained. We just end up getting drug tested.

Also our bathroom is a total drug den for all of our local drug addicts. That probably doesn’t help with the violence situation.

So then, is the apparent fact that there are alot of druggies in that area the reason why there is so much crime/violence?

And why can’t your bathroom be locked (for legit customers only…they can request a key at customer service)? Wouldn’t this help alleviate some of the problem?
